Lately The New York Times has asked jazz musicians, writers and scholars to share the favorites that would make a friend fall in love with Herbie Hancock, New Orleans jazz, Sun Ra or Mary Lou Williams. Now we’re putting the spotlight on avant-garde jazz, a challenging subgenre born out of the desire to do something that wasn’t as prescribed as bebop or post-bop, a sound carried by the fire of spontaneity by players who weren’t considered to be in the upper echelon of jazz. The definition of avant-garde jazz has been a point of contention since its inception. Perhaps its biggest public advocate was the saxophonist and bandleader John Coltrane, who took an interest in free jazz — a subset of avant-garde jazz — in the mid-1960s and pushed for the saxophonists Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders to release their music on the mainstream label Impulse! Today, the rules for what is and what isn’t avant-garde are still being written.

China's policy regarding Taiwan, the world's leader in the semiconductor industry, could end up making it an even bigger focus. The cross-strait strife has already provoked commentary from some top contenders in the Republican presidential primary race who have stressed the need to deter a possible Chinese invasion invasion of the island. But I think ultimately what I think China respects is strength," DeSantis said. 'Like trying to separate conjoined twins'But the political will to defend Taiwan in a Chinese invasion may clash with economic forces. Some CEOs of America's biggest banks have said they would pull their business from China if directed to do so following an invasion of Taiwan.
Elon Musk spoke this week on a topic few CEOs want to weigh in on publicly: China's intentions to ultimately integrate Taiwan as part of the People's Republic of China. "The official policy of China is that Taiwan should be integrated. And he added, "the situation is actually a lot worse for a lot of other companies than Tesla. "I don't think it's imminent but I do think companies should heed what he [Musk] says." The U.S. government policy remains to not take an official position on Taiwan as an independent and sovereign state.

The latest U.S. economic data suggests a recession is coming, according to the chief executive of financial advisory firm Longview Economics, and investors may need to prepare for some pain in the stock market. Speaking to CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Friday, Chris Watling said he believed a recession was on its way, citing what he described as "pretty compelling" and "brutally bad" leading economic indicators. The Conference Board on Thursday said its Leading Economic Index for the U.S. fell by 1.2% in March, slipping to its lowest level since November 2020. The data appeared to indicate that economic weakness could soon intensify and spread throughout the U.S. economy. "Every time you've had that in the U.S., you've had a recession.

In an interview with CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe," Watling explained that the U.S. equity market is currently on a relative P/E ratio that has only been substantially higher during the TMT bubble and the pandemic.
The U.S. equity market is flashing warning signs, according to chief market strategist Chris Watling. The S & P 500 was trading at 3,985 on Wednesday morning at a price-to-earnings ratio of nearly 20x even as the U.S. central bank attempts to tighten financial conditions. .SPX 1Y line While investors may be tempted to stay in the market due to a lack of better options, Watling suggests otherwise. Stocks have risen over the past five months partly in response to a lack of distress in the high-yield bond market. This seems to be defying credit conditions wanted by the Federal Reserve, and Watling suggests it could be a short-term liquidity story driving the market.
