CNN —Shark patrols are ramping up off Long Island beaches after five people were bitten in two days by marine animals that are likely sharks, authorities say. Officials in Long Island’s eastern Suffolk County, where three of the attacks occurred, have increased beach patrols and are using drones to scour the water for potential threats, the Suffolk County Police Department said Tuesday. Though no sharks were seen by the girl or anyone nearby at the time of the incident, the bite was most likely from a shark, Gorman said. Also Tuesday, a 15-year-old boy was bitten on his foot by a shark while surfing off Fire Island’s Kismet Beach, Suffolk police said. Three more people were bitten on Tuesday, including a 47-year-old man swimming in chest-deep water off of Long Island’s Quogue Village Beach, local police said.

CNN —Television veteran Geraldo Rivera announced on Thursday that he was leaving Fox News after being fired from the program “The Five.”“I’m not going to be on ‘The Five,’” Rivera said of the right-wing network’s 5 p.m. talk show in a video posted to Twitter. “I’ve been fired from ‘The Five.’”“And, as a result of that, I quit Fox,” Rivera said in the video filmed from a boat off Long Island’s Jones Beach. A Fox News spokesperson did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. Rivera, who has been with the right-wing network since 2001, said he will “have more to say” about his decision during the “Fox and Friends” program on Friday morning. But Rivera said at the time he would remain with the network as correspondent at large.

The Guest , by Emma ClineAlex has been kicked out of her wealthy lover’s vacation house on Long Island’s East End just days before summer ends. Instead of returning to New York City, she flits around the island, charming her way into homes, parties and clubs while waiting for her romantic spat to blow over. Cline’s last novel, “The Girls,” was a psychological portrait of women in a Manson-like cult, and she brings the same perception and sensitivity to young women in extremis to this new work of fiction. WASHINGTON — George Santos, the 34-year-old New York Republican who's confessed to lying about part of his background, was sworn into the House early Saturday amid several investigations into his campaign and calls for him to resign. Santos officially took office when the new Congress was convened after Republicans finally elected Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as House speaker. And despite presenting himself as Jewish during his congressional campaigns, Santos told the Post, "I never claimed to be Jewish." Several House Democrats have criticized Santos, but none more than Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York, who's taken to trolling Santos on social media. Former Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, who recently retired from Congress, said Sunday that Santos should consider resigning.

Kenmore, N.Y. This village of 15,000 in Erie County, immediately north of Buffalo, lies squarely in Kathy Hochul country. New York’s Democratic governor was born in Buffalo and represented the area in Congress before becoming lieutenant governor in 2013. A young Republican Party worker tells me that the Democrats have “a 2-to-1 enrollment advantage” in Kenmore, but we’re standing in a hall packed with supporters of Rep. Lee Zeldin , Ms. Hochul’s Republican challenger, who hails from Long Island’s Suffolk County, more than 450 miles away. Most statewide polls show Ms. Hochul, once a prohibitive favorite, leading only by single digits.
