The GM logo is seen on the facade of the General Motors headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., March 16, 2021. The UAW's GM vote tracking site currently shows approval of the contract leading by a 52% to 48% margin with about 22,150 workers having cast votes out of about 46,000 UAW-represented GM workers. That total does not include Arlington, which has about 5,000 UAW members, the most of any GM plant. Workers at other GM plants have voted against the deal, including 60% of workers at its Fort Wayne, Indiana truck plant, 53% at its Wentzville, Missouri plant, and 58% of workers at GM's Lansing Grand River plant. Currently, about 66% of Ford workers that have voted are in favor of the UAW deal; about 79% of Stellantis workers have so far voted in favor, according to UAW figures.

Exxon Mobil aims to become a leading producer of lithium for electric vehicle batteries through a drilling operation the oil giant is launching in Arkansas, the company announced Monday. Discussions with potential customers such as electric vehicle and battery manufacturers are ongoing, Exxon said in a statement. The lithium operation comes as the major oil companies are under pressure to address climate change. Exxon views lithium as a decadeslong investment with high growth potential as the U.S. shifts to electric vehicles, Ammann said. The U.S currently has just one commercial-scale lithium production operation, in Nevada.

But most observers read China’s move as a warning shot in an increasingly high-stakes trade skirmish, as China, the United States and the European Union explore the new geopolitics of advanced manufacturing and a clean-energy transition. China’s leverage over the global critical minerals supply explains why the particulars of the Inflation Reduction Act are so important. It does this, in part, by providing generous incentives for domestic production of critical minerals, battery components and batteries. For a vehicle to be eligible for the subsidy, in addition to meeting price caps, final assembly must take place in North America, and an increasing percentage of the critical minerals and battery components must be sourced from North America or, in the case of critical minerals, from free-trade partners. So as the United States expands investments in clean energy manufacturing, its dependency on global supply chains, dominated by China, will only grow.

GM earnings give its restive workers an inch

On Tuesday, GM reported strong earnings that will embolden staff who have walked out at all three of the big Detroit firms. GM beat analysts’ expectations for third-quarter profit despite a $200 million hit from the strikes that started in September. That said, the firm run by Mary Barra also ditched its official forecast as it wrestles with the $200 million weekly costs from labor disruptions. Fortunately for GM, talks with its union seem to have narrowed in from earlier demands that would have vaporized the industry’s operating profit. Ongoing strikes by the United Auto Workers union, which represents GM employees, cost the company $200 million in the third quarter.

It’s a message ringing clear at the Tokyo Mobility Show, which will run through Nov. 5 at Tokyo Big Sight hall and where battery-powered electric vehicles are the star at practically every booth. Toyota Motor Corp.’s lean angular Lexus concept, set to go on sale in 2026, is an electric vehicle running on lithium-ion batteries. That is partly because of Toyota’s past success in hybrids, exemplified in the Prius, which have a gasoline engine in addition to an electric motor. In China, a third of vehicles sold are EVs. Nissan, an early EV maker among the Japanese with its Leaf going on sale in 2010, is showcasing four EV concept cars.

But few of them besides Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 are selling at high enough volumes to support a full-scale assembly plant, according to a Reuters analysis of U.S. EV sales data for the first six months of 2023. But that market share was divided up among 103 different models, according to the Alliance's latest quarterly report on the EV market. The U.S. automaker, like several rivals, has committed billions to build additonal EV and battery plants in the U.S. In a media presentation on Tuesday, Cox Automotive noted that Tesla has surrendered some share of U.S. EV sales this year as more entrants hit the market, but still commands nearly two-thirds of all EV sales. Biden’s History-Making Walk on the Picket Line

Biden's presence at the event was historic and extraordinary: Both the White House and labor union experts said that a sitting president has never walked a picket line in support of striking workers. Presidents typically try to mediate when management and labor union disputes threaten to disrupt the economy. President Ronald Reagan in 1981 fired more than 11,000 striking air traffic controllers, delivering a major blow to the labor union movement. Trump also promised auto workers in Lordstown, Ohio, in 2017 that their plant would not close, so “don’t move. Biden's backing of electric vehicles has some auto union members worried they will lose their jobs in gasoline-powered auto plants, and Trump has exploited that concern to his advantage.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. said Monday that it's pausing construction of a $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan until it is confident it can run the factory competitively. The move comes as the company is in the midst of national contract talks with the United Auto Workers union, which wants to represent workers at battery factories and win them top wages. In February, Ford announced plans to build the plant in Marshall, Michigan, employing about 2,500 workers to make lower-cost batteries for a variety of new and existing vehicles. But Ford spokesman TR Reid confirmed Monday that plant construction has been paused and spending has been limited on it. Earlier this year Virginia dropped out of the race for the same Ford plant after Republican Gov.

CNN —Ford is pausing work on a new, $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan, even as the transition to electric vehicles has become a major sticking point in a United Auto Workers strike against automakers Ford, GM and Stellantis. No final decision has been made on whether the plant will, ultimately, become operational, said Ford spokesman T.R. If completed, the plant will be located on a 950-acre site in southern Michigan near the town of Marshall. The battery plant was planned to operate in addition to plants in Kentucky and Tennessee that Ford announced in 2021. Ford has said it plans to be able to produce 2 million electric vehicles globally by late 2026.

Britain was the first major economy to create a legally binding 2050 net zero target and emissions have fallen almost 50% since 1990 as coal power plants closed and offshore wind power took off. The government's own independent adviser on climate action said in June that Britain was not doing enough to hit its mid-century target. Ford said it had spent 430 million pounds ($532 million) on its UK development and manufacturing facilities, with "further funding planned for the 2030 timeframe". Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution will boost their joint investment in a Georgia battery manufacturing plant by $2 billion and add 400 additional jobs, the companies and the state said Thursday. The auto manufacturing plant is scheduled to begin producing vehicles in January 2025 and will build 300,000 vehicles annually. Auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis will assemble battery packs using cells from the plant, then supply them to Hyundai Motor manufacturing facilities in the United States for production of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis electric vehicles. Last year, Hyundai global chief operating officer Jose Munoz said the Georgia plant could eventually produce 500,000 vehicles annually, if demand warrants. Hyundai Motor in April said it had finalized a separate $5 billion electric vehicle battery joint venture in the US with partner SK On, a battery unit of SK Innovation Co.

China is dominant in magnets and the rare earth metals they are made from. Magnet makers are also drawn to Vietnam by low labour costs and market access afforded by multiple free-trade deals. It said it sources most of its rare earths from China but is seeking alternative sources in Vietnam and Australia and plans to develop a processing facility in Vietnam. A similar request from clients prompted another Chinese magnet maker, Magsound, to decide to open a factory in Vietnam in the first half of next year, the two people said. In April, Australia's Strategic Materials (ASM.AX) signed a deal with a Vietnamese refiner that committed to supplying rare earths for export to South Korea.

London/Berlin CNN —Tesla has lodged an application to double the production capacity of its plant near Berlin to 1 million electric vehicles a year. The expansion means the Tesla factory, which delivered its first vehicle in March last year, would overtake Volkswagen (VLKAF)’s sprawling plant in the German city of Wolfsburg, stealing its crown as Europe’s biggest car factory. Anyone objecting to Tesla’s proposal to expand the German factory has until September 18 to do so. Tesla’s biggest factory outside the United States is in Shanghai. Tesla wants to double the production capacity of its assembly plant outside Berlin to one million electric vehicles a year, a move that would make it the largest car plant in Europe at a time when German automakers are struggling to keep pace in the transition to electric vehicles. Since it began production in Grünheide 16 months ago, Tesla has disrupted the German automobile landscape. Over the first half of this year, for the first time, it eclipsed Volkswagen in electric vehicle sales. Volkswagen and other German automakers, including BMW and Mercedes-Benz, have spent years fumbling their attempts to produce electric cars that can compete with Tesla in price and popularity. Across the continent in June, new registrations of electric cars increased more than 66 percent from a year earlier, outselling diesel cars for the first time, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
