On their way to the US Supreme Court, Trump's lawyers would first need to exhaust their New York state appellate options. AdvertisementNew York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron presided over closing arguments in the Trump civil fraud trial. Shannon Stapleton/ReutersThrowing the case to the US Supreme Court could, at the least, delay the imposition of penalties, Scholl said. It's unlikely the US Supreme Court would throw out New York's executive law in its entirety, he predicted. But the court could quite possibly pare back, at least in Trump's case, its most severe penalties.

It is also not known whether Burry still holds the position or whether it's some sort of hedge against a long position. Those positions were winners for Burry as the stock market finished the third quarter lower. Burry is one of several hedge fund managers who correctly identified the housing bubble ahead of the 2008 financial crisis. Burry closed his previous hedge fund, known as Scion Capital Management, after the financial crisis. The hedge fund filings do not show all types of derivatives or private investments, so the full scope of Burry's positions are unknown.

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) — The heavyweight title fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury now appears likely to be held in February. I will be sure when I’m the ring,” Usyk said. That was before Fury got knocked down and nearly defeated by Francis Ngannou, an MMA fighter making his boxing debut. “I want this to work out, I want this fight to happen,” the 36-year-old Usyk said from his training camp in Valencia. Earlier talks for a Fury-Usyk fight fell apart in March, with Warren blaming a disagreement over terms for a rematch.

When he finally reached the majors in 2022 after a grueling rehab in, he lasted just 12 games before he blew out the same ACL again.

Sadly, in the last year we've seen twice as many offences," Sharon White, chair of the John Lewis Partnership that owns department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, told BBC Radio. Weston said some of the theft was "quite organised" and Primark was also seeing higher levels of anti-social behaviour. His comments echo those of Tesco (TSCO.L) CEO Ken Murphy, who earlier this month said Britain's biggest supermarket chain was offering body-cams to staff who need them. Murphy also called for a change in the law to make abuse and violence towards retail workers a specific offence in Britain. Target (TGT.N), Foot Locker (FL.N) and Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS.N) have all warned that profits have been under pressure from loss of inventory due to theft at their stores.

As the Cold War was waning, the physicist Lewis Branscomb feared that America’s economic and scientific superiority was in jeopardy. Declining scientific literacy and critical thinking in American education, he believed, could have disastrous consequences for the country. Students, he told “The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour” on PBS in 1986, “don’t need to know a lot of facts about science, but they really do need to understand how to think in the way scientists think — that is, in a problem-solving approach, given a complex environment within which to make decisions.”Whether in academia, private industry or government, Dr. Branscomb made it his job to push for the advancement of science and give it a bigger role in public policy. He held out hope for a brighter future through technology, but only if scientists and policymakers could get the public behind the idea. Dr. Branscomb, who worked at the nexus of science, technology, policy and business throughout his career, died on May 31 at a care facility in Redwood City, Calif., his son, Harvie, said.

In the movie “Moneyball,” Peter Brand, a baseball analyst played by Jonah Hill, has a mantra for the type of player his team covets. “He gets on base,” Brand says when his boss points at him. The movie, like the Michael Lewis book upon which it is based, is about the rise of sabermetrics in Major League Baseball. It is the story of a group of outsiders who take on the baseball establishment by following a core belief rooted in an expression you can hear at any Little League game: A walk is as good as a hit. The math of the strategy is easy enough to explain.

They were going for a national championship or they should “find something else to do.” A sense of urgency was instilled in the team. When the teams walked into their locker rooms after their first indoor meet, national rankings for all events were posted on one wall to greet them. But in its final indoor meet in the conference, in February, the men lost to Cincinnati, which won its first men’s title, indoor or outdoor, since 2004.

Lewis Black, ‘Tragically, I Need You’(YouTube)If a stand-up can tap into or channel the fury of an audience, he can light up a room. Lewis Black’s great gift is that behind that dyspeptic front, you could detect a thoughtful, introspective side, a little damaged perhaps. He shows us more of that vulnerable side here, in part because the isolation of the pandemic put him in a reflective mood. Along with swinging sharp political elbows, in defense of Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, say, Black beats himself up over past relationships and sings the praises of companionship. He talks about his failed career as a playwright, bringing up theater because “I like to feel the interest of the audience leave the room.”
Glass Lewis backed the initiative, concluding Exxon could face material financial risks from the net-zero scenario. Exxon has said the world is not on a path to achieve net-zero emissions in 2050. The 2050 net-zero emissions (NZE) scenario of the International Energy Agency (IEA) envisions a path to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. "It is highly unlikely that society would accept the degradation in global standard of living required to permanently achieve a scenario like the IEA NZE," Exxon said in dismissing the proposal. Exxon rebutted the proxy firm's recommendation that it evaluate the impacts of a worst-case oil spill at its offshore Guyanese oil platforms.
