The NCAA has long maintained that college players are “student-athletes” — a term designed to perpetrate the pretense that education comes first. The school says playing on the basketball team is not a job; it's like participating in the orchestra or Model United Nations. “Because Dartmouth has the right to control the work performed by the Dartmouth men’s basketball team, and the players perform that work in exchange for compensation, I find that the petitioned-for basketball players are employees,” she wrote. The Dartmouth players want to be paid $20 an hour, like the cafeteria workers on campus, with the school paying their health care premiums. ___AP college basketball: https://apnews.com/hub/college-basketball

At the Leon’s Centre arena, home to the junior hockey team in Kingston, Ontario, a sense of outrage mixed with anticipation as fans who had gathered for a game grappled with the news that five former Canadian junior hockey players — four of whom played in the National Hockey League — had been charged last week with sexual assault. There the police, who first investigated but didn’t bring charges in 2018, plan to hold their first news conference about the case on Monday afternoon. The allegations have touched a nerve with fans, leading many to question how Hockey Canada, the nation’s governing body for the sport, has responded. The case came to light in May 2022 after TSN, a sports channel that broadcasts the world junior championship, reported that Hockey Canada had paid 3.5 million Canadian dollars, or $2.6 million, to settle a lawsuit brought by a woman who said she had been sexually assaulted by eight junior league players. At the time of the assault is said to have occurred, all of the players were members of Canada’s national junior team.

TORONTO (AP) — Even during the All-Star break, Nathan MacKinnon kept thinking ahead to the second half of the NHL season. “Everyone’s going to be playing a lot of hockey here the next couple months, so consistency’s big,” Crosby said. “There’s other teams playing good hockey, so, yeah, we got to win games.”MVP REPEAT? He trails MacKinnon by 17 points and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov by 18 in the scoring race, but McDavid is arguably playing better all-around hockey than he did last season. “It might not be the most offensively sexy year, but I think we’re doing a lot of good things,” McDavid said.

Tickets to this year’s Super Bowl are now the most expensive in NFL history, according to SeatGeek and CBS reporting: the cheapest available at $9,858. But for an organization with a nefarious history when it comes to violence against women, does the NFL really deserve Taylor Swift? Since 2000, over 1,000 NFL players have been arrested. What’s worse, when accusations are levied against professional football players rarely if ever are they held accountable or faced with real, substantial consequences. Since her first stadium appearance, she has been wildly and falsely accused of ruining professional football for deigning to express joy publicly.

SHEFFIELD, England (AP) — Last-place Sheffield United scored the latest goal on record in the Premier League — in the 13th minute of a wild period of stoppage time — to salvage a 2-2 draw with West Ham on Sunday. Two players had already been shown red cards in added-on time when Oli McBurnie was fouled by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola in an aerial collision. “That is the least we deserved," Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said. Vladimir Coufal was booked for his part in a melee after Brewster's foul and picked up a second yellow card moments later for a foul on James McAtee. West Ham stayed in sixth place and is five points behind Tottenham in fifth.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Justin Simmons gave another impassioned defense of suspended Denver Broncos teammate Kareem Jackson on Wednesday, calling for the NFL to provide more clarity and consistency in the rules intended to protect the health and safety of players. The NFL on Tuesday upheld its four-game suspension of Jackson for lowering his helmet to hit Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs in Denver's 21-20 win Sunday night. “I mean, the fact that he’s going to miss the next four games in a crucial part of our season is unbelievable,” Simmons said. “And for a play that if that’s routinely going to be called, why was it not called on that one play? “We're trying our best to adapt to the rules while we’re in the game,” Simmons added.

New York CNN —At least a dozen major brands have halted ad spending on X, formerly Twitter, since its latest advertiser exodus began last week over concerns about antisemitism and hate speech on Elon Musk’s social media platform. The ongoing exit of advertisers marks a deepening crisis for X, which was already struggling to woo brands back to the platform following Musk’s takeover last year. IBM’s decision also came after Musk had publicly endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory in a post on X earlier in the week. X also said it had made the pro-Nazi accounts identified by Media Matters ineligible for monetization, meaning ads can no longer be run on their pages. (Media Matters has vowed to fight the lawsuit from X and says it stands by its reporting.)

MADRID (AP) — The latest international break is proving costly for several European clubs, including Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both teams will be depleted by the injury absences of important players affected by the “FIFA virus” while on duty with their national teams. Media in Spain and other countries refer to injuries sustained on international duty as the “FIFA virus.” And the injury to Gavi is another example. Camavinga started all four of Madrid’s Champions League games and appeared in all 13 of its Spanish league matches this season. FIFA approved its insurance program for clubs when Bayern Munich official Karl-Heinz Rummenigge complained after Arjen Robben got injured with the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Last week, I gave a lecture at the University of California at San Diego about politics and social justice. Afterward, as I was signing books, a young Black woman approached my table and whispered a question, asking me what I thought about the horrors playing out in Gaza. Almost all of them described themselves as anti-Zionist, but in our conversations, all of them also condemned antisemitism. When I talked to the pro-Palestinian activists and scholars, I posed a simple question that is often asked: Do you believe that Israel has a right to exist? When I told Greenblatt that none of my interviewees gave a direct “yes” to the right-to-exist question, he said that was “almost indescribably offensive” because he connects any hesitation on the question to historical antisemitism and a denial of the Jewish people’s right to self-determination.

The proposed sale of the Premier League soccer team Everton F.C. to a Miami-based holding company has stalled because the firm, 777 Partners, has failed to provide audited financial statements to a British government regulator that must approve the deal. The regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority, delivered its request to 777 Partners this month, according to multiple people with direct knowledge of the approval process, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. If the company does not provide the requested financials or an acceptable explanation, its proposed takeover of Everton — a deal involving hundreds of millions of dollars in assumed debt and a coveted place in the world’s richest soccer league — could fall apart. The missing documents are the most significant complication to date in the effort by 777 Partners to add Everton to the collection of high-profile but financially troubled teams it has acquired over the past two years.

But A24’s newly restored 40th anniversary print of the band’s legendary concert film “Stop Making Sense” feels like a moment for a reappraisal. Talking Heads’ lyrics are undeniably more elliptical than N.W.A.’s or the Dead Kennedys’. “Stop Making Sense” starts off within the bounds of that New Wave approach. Byrne’s idiosyncratic dancing and physical appearance are central to “Stop Making Sense,” and he never stops being malfunctioning, android or ectomorph. “Stop Making Sense” included singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Hold, legendary Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales and The Brothers Johnson guitarist Alex Weir.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dallas, Florida and New York will host matches at next year's men's T20 World Cup, the governing body of cricket announced Wednesday. Venues in Grand Prairie outside Dallas and Broward County in Florida will be increased in size to expand seating, media and premium hospitality areas to enable them to host matches in the 20-team tournament, which makes it the biggest T20 World Cup yet. Florida also hosted recent T20s between India and the West Indies at Central Broward Stadium in Lauderhill. The T20 cricket format is favored to be one of the sports added to the program for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, with decisions by the International Olympic Committee scheduled at meetings next month in Mumbai, India. Elon Musk, one of the world’s richest men who is now most famous for running the website X, formerly known as Twitter, has a new excuse for the company’s shaky performance since he bought it last year. The problem, according to Mr. Musk, is the Jews. A 2018 report by the ADL noted that 4.2 million antisemitic tweets had been shared or re-shared on the platform in the previous year, before Twitter’s ban on extremist accounts took effect. Mr. Musk largely reversed those policies under the aegis of free speech. Mr. Musk also blamed a collapse in the company’s value — estimates place the company’s current worth at roughly one-third the $44 billion Mr. Musk paid for it — on the ADL, saying that he was considering legal action against the ADL and signaling that he supported banning the organization from X.

Elly De La Cruz was relaxing with a group of teammates in the visitors’ clubhouse at Camden Yards on Monday when news broke that he had been named the National League Player of the Week after only his 17th game in the big leagues. “What took you so long?” one of his teammates asked. “Yeah,” another added, “Matt did it in his first week.”The mock impatience, and comparisons to Matt McLain, his teammate and fellow rookie, underscored just how promising the Cincinnati Reds’ future — and their present — appear to be. McLain, a 23-year-old infielder, had won the same honor as De La Cruz at the end of May after only his first full week of play. De La Cruz, 21, arrived 22 days later, and it took him less than three weeks to be named the best player in his league — at least for a week.

"Christian Nationalism: A Biblical Guide For Taking Dominion And Discipling Nations" was written by Torba and Andrew Isker, a pastor from Minnesota. Christian nationalism can generally be boiled down to the belief that Christianity should have a privileged position in American society. Torba's book demonstrates this, as his description of Christian nationalism differs in some ways from academic understandings of it. Phelan M. Ebenhack, File/Associated PressThe public embrace of a somewhat taboo conceptScholars of Christian nationalism, and Christian nationalists themselves, are quick to point out these ideas are not new. "We're now definitely well past the 'Christian nationalism doesn't exist' and the 'Christian nationalism is fringe' arguments to full-on 'Christian nationalism is the only way forward.'"
