"I'm really proud of this moment," Carolina Panthers President Kristi Coleman told CNBC ahead of the game. The game is the first time two female presidents will go head-to-head in professional football. When the Carolina Panthers take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, it will mark a historic first for the National Football League. The NFL says 22 women currently hold full-time coaching positions in the NFL. As part of growing and developing that pipeline of women, the NFL holds an annual Women's Forum.

The WNBA has enjoyed some of the fastest growth a sports league has ever seen, thanks in large part to superstar rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. But top WNBA players don't yet have the lofty salaries to match. Once the WNBA season is over, Jones plays a second season in Europe, mainly to complement her salary. The money is allocated from the $75 million the WNBA raised in 2022 from a group of investors. Though the WNBA's success has not yet led to the massive salaries seen in men's pro sports, many in the league believe it's only a matter of time.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert late Tuesday night clarified that she’s vehemently opposed to “hate or racism” after her response to a question about social media abuse drew criticism from players in her league. Instead of addressing the matter with a simple message against online hate, Engelbert toasted their rivalry and celebrated that there’s “no more apathy” in the WNBA. "During a recent media interview, I was asked about the dark side of social media and online conversation about WNBA rivalries and race," she wrote on the platform formally known as Twitter. "To be clear, there is absolutely no place for hate or racism of any kind in the WNBA or anywhere else." When the NFL signed an 11-year, $111 billion media rights deal in 2021, streaming was already part of the mix. Live sports broadcasts have maintained a large audience on traditional TV, even as consumers flee the cable bundle for streaming services. The majority of viewership still comes from traditional TV, according to ratings data. Schroeder said Tuesday that the NFL's strategy exists in both the traditional TV and streaming worlds. Netflix will stream NFL games for the next three years, with two games being streamed this year on the platform, and at least one matchup in both 2025 and 2026.

Sports betting is continuing its integration into modern sports culture, and industry leaders do not expect the growth to slow down any time soon. As much tailwind as sports betting companies have received from growing legalization and popularity across the country, taxes and ethical concerns have presented difficulties. Several states have a 51% tax on sports betting companies, and Illinois recently approved a tax increase on sports betting revenue. Sports betting has also garnered negative headlines in recent months as professional sports leagues have struggled to effectively stop players from violating betting and gambling rules. The speakers also addressed widespread concerns about whether the nature of sports betting companies' business models discourages them from providing proper guardrails to stop gambling problems.

This season, the NFL will play five games abroad in Europe and South America. "The reality is, when we bring our brand of our regular season games here, it creates a whole new environment," Goodell said. Goodell said it has been a learning process playing games abroad, as the league sees how players handle long flights and different time zones. Some games are streaming exclusive, including Friday's matchup in Brazil, which will air on NBC's Peacock platform. Yet, Goodell said 85% of NFL games are still available on broadcast television.

In 1995, Jones signed a 10-year, $40 million deal with Pepsi-Cola and made a $2.5 million a year, 10-year deal with Nike. The value of the Cowboys' sponsorship deals has ballooned over the years. I live in the great state of New York, where online sports gambling has been legal since 2022. Different state, different gambling rulesMy trash-chute gambling pilgrimage is specific to me, but it represents one of the many quirks of the legalized gambling industry. When you're in New York, you're not allowed to bet on in-state colleges. Leagues love gambling, until they don'tBut what makes this new era of sports gambling particularly confusing is the relationship between sportsbooks and the leagues they're setting lines for. Yet despite all the promotion (and sponsorship money) touting sports gambling, athletes betting on their own games is still very much banned.

NFL owners voted Tuesday to allow private equity firms to take a maximum 10% stake in teams. The league has never allowed private equity investment before. No other league takes a percentage of the so-called carry — the percentage of a fund's investment profits that managers typically receive as compensation — for all private equity firms. The NFL has informally told investment firms that if they make a return on an investment, it wants a portion of the profits to be returned to the league. It was unclear if the NFL's plans to take a piece of profits would deter future investment from private equity.

On Jan. 13, NBCUniversal's subscription streaming service Peacock showed its first-ever exclusive NFL playoff game — a 26-7 victory by the eventual Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs over the Miami Dolphins. For NBCUniversal, obtaining NBA rights helps guarantee sustainability in a fight for eyeballs against streaming behemoths such as Netflix , Amazon Prime Video and Disney +. Beginning with the 2025-26 season, Peacock will have about 50 exclusive national regular-season and postseason NBA games, including national Monday night games and doubleheaders. Having exclusive NBA games is really important for that mission." Discovery decided not to compete with NBCUniversal for NBA rights once the price tag ballooned past $2 billion per year.

The NFL just got a $4.7 billion win — for now

Read previewThe NFL landed a significant, albeit likely temporary, legal victory as a federal judge overturned a $4.7 billion verdict against the league. Gutierrez wrote that the evidence did not support the $4.7 billion in damages awarded in June. The jury initially awarded $4.7 billion in damages, which could have been tripled to $14 billion under federal antitrust laws. The judge wrote that two key witnesses' testimony should be excluded. Daniel Rascher and John Zona's testimonies were supposed to show that subscribers would have paid less if the NFL hadn't made a deal with DirecTV, the judge wrote.

What would you pay for a streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV? Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point. If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like YouTube TV, which currently costs $73 a month. That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.

The WNBA's new media rights deal includes a price reevaluation after the 2028 season to account for the league's rising popularity, according to people familiar with the agreement. The WNBA deal has been negotiated within a broader $77 billion NBA agreement with media partners announced earlier this week. Instead, the NBA worked with Endeavor Group's media consulting team, led by Karen Brodkin and Hillary Mandel, to assess the value of WNBA rights, said the people. The media partners aren't forced to pay more based on the conclusion of the reevaluation, but they will be incentivized to do so, the people said. A little more than halfway through its current season, the WNBA has already had 16 nationally televised games break the 1 million viewership mark — a league record.
