The American said Federer's four Grand Slam titles after turning 30 was an incredible achievement. Asked if he could offer Federer and retirement advice, McEnroe said: "He doesn't need my advice. The Spaniard climbed to the top of the ATP rankings this month when he claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows. "One of my goals is to finish (the year) as number one," Alcaraz was quoted as saying by the ATP website. "I have several tournaments before the ATP Finals and we're going to give it our all," said Alcaraz. Novak Djokovic, a 21-time Grand Slam winner, lavished praise on Alcaraz, calling the Spaniard a "great addition" to tennis. Well, he's already realised the Grand Slam champion, so we can't speak about him as future, because he's already a present."

Swiss student Aurille von Ruht said the finale, with Nadal, was the perfect way for Federer to go out. "Rafa and Roger are two beautiful players and two beautiful people, so I'm happy Roger gets to finish like this."

REUTERS/Dado RuvicLONDON, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic missed two of this year's four Grand Slams due to not being vaccinated against the novel coronavirus but the Serbian said he has no regrets about his decision. Djokovic won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles in 2021 but was unable to defend his Melbourne Park crown this year after being deported on the eve of the hardcourt major due to his unvaccinated status. The 35-year-old Serb, who has won 21 Grand Slam titles, was also unable to travel to New York for the U.S. Open. "No, I don't have any regrets," Djokovic told reporters on Thursday on the eve of the Laver Cup in London.
LONDON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Swiss icon Roger Federer will bring the curtain down on his glittering career by teaming up with great rival Rafa Nadal at the Laver Cup on Friday. The 41-year-old announced last week that the team event being played at London's O2 Arena would be his last. Federer cut a relaxed figure as he sat with his European team mates including 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and three-time major winner Andy Murray. "I'm not sure if I can handle (all the emotions) but I will try," Federer, whose presence had fans flocking to watch practice sessions on Thursday, said. "To be able to do it one more time, I'm sure it will be wonderful and I'll try my very best."

LONDON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic hailed the retiring Roger Federer as one of the greatest athletes of all time and said he would leave a lasting legacy for the world of tennis. Federer, who has won 20 Grand Slam titles, has struggled with injuries in recent years and said last week that he would end his career after the Laver Cup in London. Djokovic beat Federer in four major finals including at Wimbledon in 2019, the Swiss's last Grand Slam final. This week's Laver Cup will be the first time that Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic are playing together in an event since the 2019 Australian Open. "It's great we will have a chance to spend some quality time off the court together," Djokovic told Eurosport.

"I just wanted to let the fans know I won't be a ghost. It's funny, I spoke about Bjorn Borg, he didn't return to Wimbledon for 25 years and that hurts every fan," Federer said of the 11-time major winner who quit tennis aged 26. Having not played competitively since losing in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last year, Federer will make his final bow with a doubles match, possibly alongside great rival Rafa Nadal. Having Bjorn Borg on the bench with me when I walk out is going to be something that is beyond cool and I felt that was something really nice. He claimed 103 career titles, second only to Jimmy Connors, and spent a record 237 consecutive weeks as world number one from 2004 to 2008.
Roger Federer has said he is "definitely done" playing professional tennis and has no plans to come out of retirement after announcing last week that he was quitting the sport. "Serena seems to be wavering a little," she said, referencing tennis star Serena Williams. I am definitely done," Federer, the winner of 20 major singles titles, responded. Federer announced his retirement from tennis last Thursday. Nadal has won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, while Djokovic has claimed 21 major trophies.
