That is why I propose a common-sense, everyone-wins idea: Let's make the Monday after daylight-saving time starts a federal holiday. Many of our 11 federal holidays were added in recent history: Memorial Day in 1968 (and observed since 1971). And yes, federal holidays come with an economic cost; government workers still get paid for that day. Everyone knows that's the worst of all the federal holidays, in the middle of dreary February. The best Presidents Day has to offer in terms of cultural impact is that it's when mattresses go on sale.

A boomer and her husband moved to southwest Florida from Minnesota to start her clothing business. They moved to southern Minnesota, then northern Minnesota to an off-the-grid cabin an hour north of Duluth. They knew northern Minnesota was not conducive to starting a business, so they considered Florida an ideal location. She said she's also adjusting to the fishing scene in Florida, which is mainly saltwater, compared to freshwater fishing in Minnesota. Despite all she's been through, Pelton thinks she'll stay in Florida for the time being — the only other place she's considering is India.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon jury awarded $85 million Tuesday to nine victims of wildfires that ravaged the state in 2020, the latest verdict in a series of legal proceedings that are expected to put the utility PacifiCorp on the hook for billions of dollars over its liability for the deadly blazes. “The 2020 wildfires were undeniably tragic,” it said. “PacifiCorp has settled and will continue to settle all reasonable claims for actual damages under Oregon law. The damages awarded Tuesday were the first in cases brought by that broader class, with additional trials expected in February and April. PacifiCorp also agreed last month to pay $299 million to settle a lawsuit brought by 463 plaintiffs who were harmed by separate devastating wildfires in southern Oregon over Labor Day 2020.

CEOs are letting up on the battle to get employees to return to the office full-time, five days a week, according to a CEO survey from The Conference Board. Just 4% of US CEOs and 4% of CEOs worldwide say they will prioritize bringing workers back to the office full time, the survey found. Toward the latter half of 2023, major companies announced they were getting stricter on office work — but notably didn’t announce a full return. An EY US survey of C-suite corporate leaders found that full-time remote work plummeted from 34% in 2022 to just 1% in 2023. The study also noted that hybrid work is “firmly established.”CEOs will have to approach hybrid work at an industry-by-industry level, Scott said.

'Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce' tops box office

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 4 (Reuters) - "Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce" premiered at the top of the U.S. box office, raking in $21.8 million during the typically anemic first weekend of December, according to research firm Comscore. Beyonce Knowles' concert film marked the first time a movie crossed the $20 million mark on this weekend since the 2003 movie "The Last Samurai" starring Tom Cruise, Comscore said. Live Nation reported that the superstar’s 56-stop Renaissance World Tour earned more than $579 million worldwide - a hot ticket that economists say may have fanned inflation in Europe. In addition to the concert scenes, the film gave a rare glimpse at how Beyonce grapples with stardom and motherhood. Although "Renaissance's" box office fell short of Swift's $96 million opening weekend, Comscore's Dergarabedian said the result will likely be the same.

Brian Swensen, a national political director for Ramaswamy who had been focusing much of his time on the crucial early nominating state of New Hampshire, left the former biotech executive's presidential campaign as it has struggled to gain traction. A Trump aide said Swensen will now help the former president's campaign in Nevada, another early state in the Republican nomination battle. Ramaswamy, 38, who has staked out far-right positions on many issues and has been a fervent defender of Trump, created political buzz early in his campaign with combative, attention-grabbing debate performances. Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for Ramaswamy's campaign, said Swensen's departure had nothing to do with internal problems within the campaign. She said the appointment of Mike Biundo, a veteran political operative from New Hampshire, as Ramaswamy's national political adviser had rendered Swensen's New Hampshire role less relevant.

Thanksgiving gas prices set to be the cheapest since 2020
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday travel rush, gas prices are tumbling fast. This exceeds the typical seasonal drop in gas prices during the fall and leaves the national average at a 10-month low. If prices stay near current levels, this would be the cheapest gas price on Thanksgiving Day since 2020 when Covid-19 caused many Americans to stay off the roads altogether. GasBuddy projects the national average will slide to $3.25 a gallon or lower by Thanksgiving Day, marking the lowest priced Thanksgiving Day for fuel prices in three years. By comparison, gas prices stood at $3.57 a gallon on last year’s holiday following a year of notoriously high prices.

In 2019, Henry Kissinger warned that the U.S. and China had entered the “foothills of a cold war,” and the Sino-American relationship has only worsened since. The prospect of a new cold war has induced some historians to reexamine the old one. Nick Bunker’s “In the Shadow of Fear: America and the World in 1950” is one such reexamination. But over the ensuing 10 months, Truman’s attempt to expand on FDR’s domestic legacy fell apart, and the Democratic coalition that had dominated American politics for two decades began to break up as well. Most perplexingly to Mr. Bunker, “American politics descended into strife at a moment when in so many ways the nation had little to fear.”

Gene Sperling, the White House liaison for the strike talks, was in daily contact with executives at the UAW and the three automakers. By that point, there was enough trust that the misunderstanding did little from the White House perspective to hurt the relationship. The UAW president declined to endorse the president who had engaged in the historic outreach. So as I said we’ll do that when it’s time.”Still, the White House saw itself as building trust with the UAW as the talks progressed. The Labor Day tragedy in 2019 spurred changes to maritime regulations, congressional reform and civil lawsuits. At the time of the fire, no owner, operator or charterer had been cited or fined for failure to post a roving patrol since 1991, Coast Guard records showed. The NTSB faulted the Coast Guard for not enforcing that requirement and recommended it develop a program to ensure boats with overnight passengers actually have the watchman. The Coast Guard has since enacted new regulations regarding fire detection systems, extinguishers, escape routes and other safety measures as mandated by Congress. Victims' families have sued the Coast Guard in one of several ongoing civil suits.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Max Scherzer has pitched only once since a miserable night in early September that saw the Houston Astros complete an overwhelming three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers. The Rangers acquired the 39-year-old right-hander from New York in a deadline deal in hopes of starts just like this. Scherzer was dealing with forearm tightness six weeks ago when he allowed seven runs — all on three homers — over three innings in the Astros' 12-3 win. This time, the Astros need to win at least two of three games to extend the series and get back home. “The way we look at it, we were one hit in each game away from winning those games.

The world has changed since Biden visited a familiar place to talk up familiar topics, though. Other domestic matters also are competing for political attention, with the fight over choosing the next Republican House speaker potentially imperiling continued U.S. aid to Ukraine and a United Auto Workers strike entering its fifth week. Biden's reelection campaign has joined the White House in stressing that being president always means juggling multiple pressing concerns. Whatever the message, the president can help himself politically Friday just by staying focused on Pennsylvania, said longtime Democratic strategist Robert Shrum.
