  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will hold an emergency meeting with police chiefs on Monday after days of violent anti-immigration protests intensified, with buildings and vehicles torched and hotels holding asylum seekers targeted. Riots have erupted across towns and cities in the last week after three girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport in northwest England, with 420 people arrested so far. Police have said the suspect was born in Britain and are not treating it as a terrorist incident. Interior minister Yvette Cooper said rioters had felt "emboldened by this moment to stir up racial hatred", with bricks thrown at police officers, shops looted and mosques and Asian-owned businesses attacked. In Rotherham, northern England, protesters sought to break into a hotel that housed asylum seekers.

Britain’s Weekend of Violence: What We Know

After a weekend of violent uprisings across Britain, set off by a deadly stabbing rampage and an anti-immigrant disinformation campaign that followed it, tensions are high from the streets to government leaders’ offices. Here is what we know as the country enters a new week of uncertainty. Protesters over the weekend took to the streets of a dozen cities across the United Kingdom, most of them in England. In some cases, the protesters were merely unruly, but in others the violence was far more pronounced. It remained unclear whether asylum seekers were still staying at the hotel and no guests were injured in the melee, police said.

The police in cities across Britain were bracing on Sunday for the spread of far-right and anti-immigration protests, a day after dozens of people were arrested in another day of unrest after a stabbing in a northern town last week. Protests in cities including Liverpool and Manchester descended into riots on Saturday, prompting a heavy police response across the country. The National Police Chiefs’ Council, which represents law enforcement across Britain, has said that nearly 4,000 additional officers have been deployed to deter the violence. “The police have our full backing,” Yvette Cooper, the British home secretary, said on Saturday. A 17-year-old suspect was later named.

The UK is bracing for a new wave of protests on Sunday, after a stabbing attack in northwest England this week sparked disorder fueled by the far right. David Young/PA WireThere have been discussions to bring in the army to assist police, but currently “there is no need to bring in the army,” Johnson said. “The police have made it very clear that they have all the resources they need at the moment. There’s mutual aid, as I’ve just described, and they have the powers that they need.”Several UK cities saw violent protests on Saturday. Violence erupted in several English cities on Saturday amid anti-immigrant protests, as crowds of far-right activists scuffled with the police and counterprotesters in the northern cities of Liverpool, Hull and Nottingham, among other locations. Tensions have simmered in communities across Britain in the wake of a stabbing in the northern town of Southport on Monday, as misinformation over the identity of the attacker has swirled online. The knife attack on a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class for elementary school-aged girls stunned Britain and ignited days of anti-immigrant riots in multiple cities that were incited by far-right provocateurs. Increasingly, the demonstrations have drawn counter-protests in communities across the country. In Liverpool, a city near Southport, where Monday’s stabbing took place, police vehicles were damaged as protesters threw bricks and chanted “stop the boats” — a reference to asylum seekers who arrive in small boats in the English Channel — and antifascist groups confronted them on Saturday.

In an unusual move, a British court on Thursday named the 17-year-old suspect in a stabbing rampage that left three children dead and eight injured in northwestern England early this week. The suspect, Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, appeared in a court in Liverpool to face three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder, and possession of a bladed article. Although the police said repeatedly that the suspect had been born in Cardiff, Wales, misinformation spread rapidly on social media claiming that he was an undocumented immigrant. The proliferation of those erroneous reports persuaded the judge, Andrew Menary, to lift the typical restrictions on the news media’s ability to report the identity of an underage suspect. “Continuing to prevent the full reporting has the disadvantage of allowing others to spread misinformation, in a vacuum,” Judge Menary said, according to the Press Association.
