EV battery replacements could cost anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000, according to Recurrent. One of the biggest concerns that prospective electric-car buyers have is if they'll ever have to make a costly battery replacement. Excluding major recalls for the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV and Hyundai Kona Electric, of the EVs studied by battery health reporting firm Recurrent, only 1.5% have received battery replacements. Including the two well-known EV battery pack recalls raises that percentage of battery replacements to 6.5%, according to Recurrent, or 975 of the 15,000. Automakers have a variety of EV battery warranties to assuage fears about potential replacements.
Electric vehicle sales keep growing, too. As recently as 2021, total battery-powered electric vehicle sales in the U.S. were under 450,000, but Kelley Blue Book says sales surpassed 800,000 in 2022 and are expected to top one million this year. While the used EV market is still very small, the growth trajectory of EV sales means shopping for a used electric vehicle will become more common and get easier over time, and encompass more make and model choices. In many ways, shopping for a used electric vehicle is the same as looking for any other used car or truck. Electric vehicles lose value faster, but upkeep is lessEVs generally depreciate faster than ICE vehicles, according to Kelley Blue Book.

The Coast Guard is searching for a man believed to have gone overboard a cruise ship this week. Insider previously reported that man overboard incidents are relatively rare. The US Coast Guard is still searching for an Australian passenger believed to have gone overboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship hundreds of miles from Hawaii on Tuesday night. Officials first received a call from the Quantum of the Seas cruise ship about a man overboard at 11:03 p.m. on Tuesday. The search for the overboard man resumed Wednesday morning as a Coast Guard helicopter conducted a six-hour aerial search in the area, but failed to locate the missing man.
Hong Kong CNN —The US Coast Guard has so far found no sign of an Australian passenger believed to have fallen overboard a cruise ship traveling from Brisbane to Hawaii. In statement, the coast guard said it had received a report from the Quantum of the Seas cruise ship late night Tuesday, of a man overboard some 500 miles (805 kilometers) south of Kailua Kona, Big Island. A US Coast Guard Hercules helicopter conducted an aerial search of the area for six hours on Wednesday and it will resume the search at first light on Thursday, the coast guard said. “While on its trans-pacific sailing, a guest onboard Quantum of the Seas went overboard,” the company said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate Nine News. The vessel made its maiden voyage in 2014 from Southampton to New York, and was at the time branded as the “world’s smartest cruise ship” with robot waiters and features skydiving on deck.

REUTERS/Henry NichollsApril 8 (Reuters) - As the fortunes of Richard Branson's Virgin Orbit were crashing to Earth last month, a little-known investor called Matthew Brown appeared offering a $200 million rescue. Virgin Group, which owns 75% of Virgin Orbit, also declined to comment for this article. The group is providing financing to Virgin Orbit as the satellite launch company seeks a buyer in bankruptcy. Hyundai launched Evolve+ in February, a program that lets the "EV curious" try driving an electric car for a flat monthly rate. Brad Sowers, president at Jim Butler Auto Group in Fenton, Missouri, offers DriveBLACKTIE, a way to help customers try an EV without a major commitment. But automakers and dealers are desperate to speed up EV adoption, as they spend trillions of dollars to develop and launch new electric cars. EV adoption in the US has been slower than elsewhere across the globe due to a lack of public charging infrastructure, inventory availability, cost, and more. Allowing drivers to take home EVs and try them out could help increase education and familiarity with electric cars, with relatively little effort on the part of automakers and dealers.

The subscription program will allow users to rent an electric car for as low as $699 per month. The South Korean car manufacturer announced the start of its Evolve+ electric vehicle subscription service at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show on Thursday. The Evolve+ app is available on the Google Play store and the Apple App Store. It's also advertised as a way to test out an electric vehicle with no long-term commitment. "Evolve+ gives our customers the opportunity to try an electric vehicle and see if it is right for their lifestyle.
Users can reserve Hyundai electric vehicles using a smartphone app. Porsche also has a car subscription program available in 14 cities, according to Porsche’s web site. However, the Hyundai Evolve+ program doesn’t include any support for charging such as help installing a home charger or included access to public chargers. “We’re currently exploring ways to include the charging with the subscription,” Hyundai spokesman Miles Johnson said in an email. “It also could be a way to help drive the adoption of electric vehicles, providing EV intenders a platform to test electric vehicles without the long-term commitment.”

Officials downgraded the alert level for Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano from a warning to a watch on Saturday as they predict that the eruption of the world's largest active volcano could soon end. "High eruption rates will not resume based on past eruptive behavior and current behavior suggests that the eruption may end soon," the U.S. Geological Survey said in a bulletin issued Saturday. The new alert level reflects "the limited hazards associated with the current activity," the latest update states. Its eruption began Nov. 27, marking its first eruption since 1984 and prompting warnings from officials that residents stay alert. Before the most recent eruption, geologists had recorded 33 eruptions since 1843, making Mauna Loa among the world’s most active volcanoes.
People watch lava from the Mauna Loa volcano on Dec. 1, 2022, near Hilo, Hawaii. If lava does cross the highway, the Hawaii National Guard can help plan for alternatives and try to set up bypass routes, the governor said. Cars wait in traffic along Saddle Road, with occupants waiting to view the Mauna Loa volcano on Thursday. Mauna Loa, which means “Long Mountain,” covers half the island, according to the USGS. It is one of six volcanoes in Hawaii, according to the agency.

REUTERS/Go NakamuraDec 2 (Reuters) - The lava flowing from Hawaii's Mauna Loa, which is the world's largest active volcano and erupted this week, is edging closer to the Big Island's main highway. But the USGS also said that because of the unpredictable nature of lava flows, it's "difficult to estimate when or if the flow will impact" the highway, which is the island's main east- west road. On flatter ground, lava flows spread out and "inflate" - creating individual lobes that can advance quickly and then stall. Mauna Loa rises 13,679 feet (4,169 meters) above the Pacific Ocean, part of a chain of volcanoes that formed the islands of Hawaii.

In the early 2010s, Mr. Mellow set out for still more distant shores, traveling to many famous surf breaks in the South Pacific. Mr. Abdul-Rashed and Mr. Danian traveled to Hawaii to connect with Mr. Mellow, their spiritual guide and Pacific expedition leader. Mr. Mellow posted an ad on Facebook and Craigslist offering $10,000 for passage to the South Pacific. Mr. Schmidt was in sync with the young seekers when it came to fear of Big Brother and vaccines, but dreading port officials brandishing nasal swabs struck even Mr. Schmidt as a little unhinged. When asked if he was at all responsible for what had happened to Mr. Danian and Mr. Abdul-Rashed, Mr. Mellow looked genuinely confused.

HONOLULU — Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt. Hawaii’s civil defense agency is holding meetings across the island to educate residents about how to prepare for a possible emergency. “Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. Molten rock flows from Mauna Loa, located on the south-central part of the island of Hawaii, on April 4, 1984. Alternatively, the temblors could subside and Mauna Loa may not erupt this time.
