Aleksei A. Navalny, an anticorruption activist who for more than a decade led the political opposition in President Vladimir V. Putin’s Russia while enduring arrests, assaults and a near-fatal poisoning, died Friday in a Russian prison, according to Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service. The prison authorities said that Mr. Navalny lost consciousness on Friday after taking a walk in the Arctic penal colony where he was moved late last year. He was last seen on Thursday, when he had appeared in a court hearing via video link, smiling behind the bars of a cell and making jokes. Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s press secretary, said in a live broadcast Friday that Navalny’s advisers were not yet able to issue an official confirmation of his death but believed that he had perished. Despite increasingly harsh conditions, including repeated stints in solitary confinement, he maintained a presence on social media, while members of his team continued to publish investigations into Russia’s corrupt elite from exile.

By Guy Faulconbridge, Felix LightMOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia's most prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny collapsed and died on Friday after a walk at the "Polar Wolf" Arctic penal colony where he was serving a long jail term, the Russian prison service said. "Russian authorities publish a confession that they killed Alexei Navalny in prison," Navalny aide Leonid Volkov wrote on social media. "Alexei Navalny paid with his life for his resistance to a system of oppression," France's Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne said. "My sincere belief is that it was the conditions of detention that led to Navalny's death," Russian newspaper editor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov told Reuters. Navalny long forecast Russia could face seismic political turmoil, including revolution, because he said Putin built a brittle system of personal rule reliant on sycophancy and corruption.

Alexei Navalny, the fiercest foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin who crusaded against official corruption and staged massive anti-Kremlin protests, died in prison Friday, Russian authorities said. Before his arrest, he campaigned against official corruption, organized major anti-Kremlin protests and ran for public office. Shortly after Navalny’s death was reported, the Russian SOTA social media channel shared images of the opposition politician reportedly in court yesterday. Navalny was detained and sent to a Russian prison in 2021 after he had returned to Russia from Germany, where he was recovering from Novichok poisoning he blamed on the Russian government. Navalny took up Nemtsov’s mantle, becoming Russia’s most prominent opposition figure. Alexey Navalny was given a suspended sentence and his brother was sentenced to a prison term. The Russian opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny was forcibly removed from his cell by law enforcement officers on Monday after he had refused to leave it to protest a decision by prison authorities to take away his writing tools, his political allies said. Mr. Navalny, 47, was scheduled to appear in court via a video link from the penal colony where he’s been held since June 2022 for a hearing in the latest in a series of lawsuits he has filed against his prison’s authorities. But the screen in the courtroom remained dark and Kira Yarmysh, his spokeswoman, later said that Mr. Navalny refused to leave his cell because his writing instruments had been confiscated. “After that, several individuals forcibly entered the cell and physically escorted him to the investigator’s office,” Ms. Yarmysh wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. Reached for comment later, she said she had no new information about what occurred.

In the case being decided on Friday, Mr. Navalny, 47, is charged with promoting terrorism, funding extremism and rehabilitating Nazism. Mr. Navalny and Western rights groups have denounced the charges against him as an attempt to silence dissent against President Vladimir V. Putin. At least 15 activists who worked with Mr. Navalny face similar charges, according to his spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh. Mr. Navalny told a court in late July that he expected to be convicted as well. “Everyone in Russia knows that someone who seeks justice in court is completely defenseless,” Mr. Navalny told the court, according to his team.

CNN —Russia’s Supreme Court has on Thursday dismissed an appeal by jailed Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny against restrictions imposed on access to writing materials in prison, according to Russian independent news site Mediazona. The decision came as Navalny is facing a new trial on charges of “extremism” that could result in his prison sentence being extended by decades. A court spokesperson said Monday that the trial will take place behind closed doors. Just hours after the trial began, Navalny announced the start of a campaign aimed at turning Russians against the war in Ukraine. In comments posted to his Twitter account, Navalny said the “absurd” charges could lead to him serving a further 30 years behind bars.

CNN —Jailed Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny said he faces a new “terrorist case,” in what could mean decades more in prison for the outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin. His comments come as his daughter, Daria Navalnaya, told CNN that the Russian authorities were depriving her father of food. Navalny is currently serving a nine-year jail term at a maximum-security prison east of Moscow after being convicted of large-scale fraud by a Russian court last year. Alexey Navalny, pictured in Moscow on August 27, 2018, said on Wednesday that he faces a new "terrorist case," despite being imprisoned. Zhdanov also said that the investigator in the terrorism case was considering the killing of military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky as part of the charges.
Kira Yarmysh, his spokeswoman, said in a video clip on Twitter accompanied by disturbing background music. Navalny's supporters cast him as a Russian version of South Africa's Nelson Mandela who will one day be freed from jail to lead the country. Navalny accused the Russian state of trying to kill him, something it denied. Yarmysh said medicine sent to Navalny's prison by his mother was not collected by prison officials from the post office and was returned. CNN —Jailed Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny has been experiencing severe stomach issues in prison, and members of his team fear that he may have been poisoned again. Navalny lost eight kilograms over the past 15 days in his isolated prison cell, his spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said in a Twitter post on Tuesday. “The lawyer says that an ambulance was called for Alexey Navalny on the night of Friday to Saturday because of an acute stomach pain. “This may sound like nonsense and paranoia to someone else, but not to Navalny after Novichok,” Kobzev tweeted on Tuesday. Investigative journalist Christo Grozev, who worked on CNN’s “Navalny” documentary, said he believes Putin has “motivation” to poison Navalny.
[1/2] Alexei Navalny's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh is seen in a replica of the prison cell where the jailed Russian opposition leader is being held, on display as part of the exhibit "Silenced" at Loevestein Castle, the Netherlands, March 30, 2023. REUTERS/Anthony DeutschLOEVESTEIN CASTLE, Netherlands, March 31 (Reuters) - A replica of the two-by-three-metre prison cell holding Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny went on display in the Netherlands on Friday as part of an exhibit entitled "Silenced" about political prisoners through the centuries. Navalny, the leading Russian opposition figure, nearly died after being poisoned with a Soviet-era nerve agent while campaigning against Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2020. Amid a crackdown by Russian authorities on the opposition, many of Navalny's most prominent allies left Russia rather than face restrictions or jail at home. She said Navalny's prison conditions are harsh, even by the standards of an authoritarian government.
The prison in Kira Yarmysh’s “The Incredible Events in Women’s Cell Number 3” is not actually a prison but a detention center, and the women inside are considered offenders rather than criminals. Anya, the novel’s main character, is serving a 10-day sentence after being plucked at random from a crowd of protestors at a Moscow anticorruption rally. The detention center is unpleasant but hardly intolerable, and the cafeteria food is surprisingly tasty. Anya’s working-class bunkmates may share her disgust for the government, but they largely view activism as a bizarre pastime for the privileged. Mostly they’re trying to finagle as many cigarettes and hot showers as possible until the annoying interlude is behind them.
LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny said on Thursday that authorities had opened a new criminal case against him for promoting terrorism and extremism, potentially more than doubling his sentence. After months of medical treatment in Germany, he was arrested for parole violations when he returned to Russia at the start of 2021. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has accelerated its campaign to quash and silence domestic opposition. Navalny has spoken out against the war, attacking Putin during a court appearance and calling the invasion "stupid" and "built on lies".
