None of the 22 Crop Watch corn and soybean fields received rain last week, the first such instance since the 22-field format began in 2021. Many of the Crop Watch producers describe this year’s finishing weather as the worst they can remember. The average Crop Watch corn yield also hit a season low this week, falling to 3.7 from 3.8 a week earlier. Eastern Iowa corn was reduced by half a point while western Iowa and Indiana corn were each down by a quarter of a point. Kohl's beats profit estimates on cost cuts, leaner inventory

Aug 23 (Reuters) - Kohl's Corp (KSS.N) beat estimates for quarterly profit on Wednesday, as leaner inventories, lower costs and fewer discounts helped the department store chain counter a broader retail slowdown. Inventory declined 14% during the quarter as Kohl's undertook stock clearance, leading to a 61 basis points drop in gross margin. "It managed to sell more excess inventory and reduced its expenses, which helped it beat expectations," Insider Intelligence analyst Zak Stambor said. "While Kohl's is still in the early innings of its turnaround plan, it appears to be moving in the right direction," Stambor said. The company earned 52 cents per share in the second quarter ended July 29, above analysts' estimates of 22 cents.

But the Crop Watch producers are concerned that this heat could challenge the corn in particular as it continues to fill out kernels. Indiana picked up 2.5 inches last week, western Illinois 2.45 inches, Nebraska up to 1.4 inches, and South Dakota got 1 inch. That ties two other weeks out of the last six for the highest Crop Watch soybean yield prospects of the season so far. Crop Watch producers continue rating both crop conditions and yield potential on 1-to-5 scales. Photos of the Crop Watch fields can be tracked on my Twitter feed using handle @kannbwx.

Crop Watch corn and soybean fields were stressed last week under mostly dry conditions, but multiple rounds of rain over the weekend prevented yield expectations from declining. Last week’s Crop Watch rain totals were mostly concentrated over the weekend, though not all areas received the needed soaking. More than 3 inches of rain were observed in South Dakota, Nebraska, western Iowa and western Illinois, and Indiana picked up 2 inches. For example, the western Iowa producer this week described his beans as phenomenal while the Ohio field was said to look incredible. The North Dakota corn is in Griggs County and the soybeans are in Stutsman County.

Crop Watch corn and soybean fields took a relatively large hit over the last week amid hot, humid weather accompanied by scarce rainfall. SCORE REDUCTIONSThe 11-field, average Crop Watch corn condition fell to 3.95 from 4.16 last week, the largest weekly cut in eight weeks. Average Crop Watch corn yield potential fell to 3.84 from 4.02 last week, also slightly lower than at the same point in the last two years. NAPERVILLE, Illinois, July 24 (Reuters) - Crop Watch condition scores have somewhat steadied after rising for three straight weeks as the latest week’s dry weather was offset by cooler temperatures. CONDITIONS AND YIELDIn the latest week, corn condition and yield contracted slightly while soybean condition edged upward, and soy yield stayed unchanged. Crop Watch producers have been rating crop conditions and yield potential on 1-to-5 scales. WEATHEROhio was the wettest Crop Watch location last week with around 2.75 inches of rain in two events, one with some damaging hail. Crop Watch corn and soybean fields rose again last week as seasonably cool temperatures dominated, outweighing some of the underwhelming rainfall totals in western areas. Cool weather should dominate this week, favorable for corn pollination, which is currently under way in at least seven of the 11 corn fields. Average corn yield starts at 3.95 versus 4.07 in the same week last year and 3.86 in the same week in 2021. The North Dakota corn is in Griggs County and the soybeans are in Stutsman County. Nine of the 11 Crop Watch corn fields should be tasseling within the next 10 days or so. Although cool July weather generally supports big crop yields, a couple of the Crop Watch producers mentioned that their fields could benefit from some heat and sun. The weekly increase was Crop Watch corn’s largest since late June 2021, when much-needed rain finally fell in the central Corn Belt. Soybean conditions jumped to 4.05 from 3.73 in the prior week, Crop Watch beans’ biggest-ever weekly improvement but similar to that same week in June 2021. That caused some offsetting of Crop Watch conditions in the latest week, though a small decline was observed overall. Crop Watch conditions are intended as more of a visual assessment than a yield indicator. A former FBI analyst was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for keeping classified documents at her home. She had unlawfully kept about 386 classified documents, according to the Justice Department. In her training, Kingsbury was warned that classified information could only be kept in an "approved facility and container," the DOJ wrote. Each count of willfully retaining national defense secrets alone carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Kingsbury pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully retaining documents related to the national defense in October.

intelligence analyst from Kansas received nearly four years in prison on Wednesday in a case that bears parallels to that of former President Donald J. Trump, including the same charge of willful retention of national security secrets. The analyst, Kendra Kingsbury, 50, was accused of improperly removing and unlawfully taking home about 386 classified documents to her personal residence in Dodge City, Kan. She pleaded guilty to two counts of violating the Espionage Act. During her sentencing hearing in Federal District Court in Kansas City, Mo., Ms. Kingsbury said she was loyal and did not apologize for taking the records. She was “guilty of being too honest,” Ms. Kingsbury said, because she had told the F.B.I. Some of the documents would have revealed the “government’s most important and secretive methods of collecting essential national security intelligence,” prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memo, adding that she removed sensitive documents during the more than 12 years she worked in the F.B.I.’s office in Kansas City.

Up to five of the 11 Crop Watch locations received no rain over the last week, and only one tallied 1 inch or more. Each week the Crop Watch producers assign condition scores to their fields on a 1-to-5 scale. Crop Watch conditions do not incorporate yield assumptions, which will come later in the season. Eight of the 11 Crop Watch corn fields carry a condition score of 4 or better as do seven of the soybean fields, though there are no perfect 5s. The firm's initial fund, Climate Assets Fund I, will focus on helping companies with proven technology scale their business to a level to attract more risk-averse investors. "Proven, transformational climate solutions are being developed to decarbonise the industrial sectors. Kohl's shares spiked Wednesday as the struggling retailer posted a surprise profit and affirmed its full-year guidance while it chases a turnaround. Kohl's surprise quarterly profit comes after multiple quarters of disappointing sales and a sinking stock price. Since then, Kohl's has tapped its new CEO Kingsbury, former chief executive of off-price retailer Burlington Stores . That contributed to a big loss in Kohl's holiday quarter and weak outlook, which the Wisconsin-based company reiterated Wednesday. During the quarter, Kohl's had its strongest sales performance in February.
The media as a whole has never really investigated the secrecy system and what it’s for and what its effects are. Q. What’s it like to live surrounded by thoughts of nuclear war and unaccountable government? I think about nuclear war not because I find it fascinating but because I want to prevent it, to make it unthinkable, because I care about the world that it would destroy. Q. We have seen nuclear weapons used many times.

Kohl’s had a rough holiday
  + stars: | 2023-03-01 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —As consumers pulled back on their holiday spending amid biting inflation, it seems that Kohl’s dropped off many shoppers’ lists. Sales at Kohl’s stores open for at least one year dropped 6.6% during the holiday quarter, the company said Wednesday. Kohl’s comments echo those of other retailers, like Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT), who have said consumers are strained, although those companies posted stronger holiday results than Kohl’s did. This change in shopping behavior hurts Kohl’s more than big-box rivals because the chain does not sell food, nor as many necessities. In November, Kohl’s chief executive Michelle Gass announced she was leaving the company to become the CEO-in-waiting at Levi’s (LEVI).
March 1 (Reuters) - Kohl's Corp (KSS.N) reported a surprise quarterly loss and forecast full-year profit well below analysts' estimates on Wednesday, as steep discounts to boost sluggish demand for apparel shredded the retailer's margins. Those discounts were the major contributor to a more than 10 percentage point decline in fourth-quarter gross margins to 23%, Kohl's said. Kohl's reported a loss of $2.49 per share for the fourth quarter ended Jan. 28, compared with estimates for a profit of 98 cents. Comparable sales at Kohl's fell 6.6% in the fourth quarter, compared with analysts' estimate of a 3.7% decrease. Separately, apparel maker Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF.N) also missed holiday quarter earnings estimates on Wednesday, hit by higher costs of cotton.
Revenue for the quarter came in at $663 million, falling well below analysts' estimates of $742 million, according to Refinitiv. Sarepta Therapeutics — The biotech stock soared by 17% after Morgan Stanley upgraded Sarepta shares to overweight from equal weight. Kohl's reported a loss of $2.49 per share on $5.78 billion of revenue. Analysts surveyed by Refinitiv had expected positive earnings of 98 cents per share on $5.99 billion of revenue. Monster reported $1.51 billion in revenue, falling short of analysts' expectations of $1.6 billion.
Kohl's shares sink after big holiday-quarter losses

Kohl's shares sunk on Wednesday after the retailer posted a big loss and a sales decline of about 7% in the holiday quarter. Kohl's is not the only retailer that has felt a pullback as consumers spend more on food, housing and other necessities. During that same three-year period, spending at Kohl's fell by 15.4% and profit at the company plummeted by 203%. Kohl's inventory remains elevated, up 4% year over year as of the end of the fourth quarter, the company said. As of Tuesday's close, Kohl's stock is up about 11% this year, outperforming the approximately 3% gain of the S&P 500.
But one analyst blamed messy Kohl's stores and "dispiriting" stores during the holidays. Kingsbury said that Kohl's store portfolio remains healthy. Kohl's partnerships with other brands is driving sales, CEO saysKohl's and Amazon inked a deal in 2019 that allows Amazon customers to return items to Kohl's stores. Ted Shaffrey/APKingsbury also highlighted Kohl's partnership with Sephora, which operates store-in-store concepts in Kohl's locations across the US. Kohl's previously said that the Amazon partnership drew over 2 million new customers to its stores in its first year.
The Kohl's logo is displayed on the exterior of a Kohl's store on January 24, 2022 in San Rafael, California. Kohl's on Thursday named interim CEO Tom Kingsbury to the post on a permanent basis. He took over as interim CEO in December after former chief executive Michelle Gass decided to leave for Levi Strauss. "The Board appreciates our constructive dialogue with Macellum during the last few months and their engagement as we conducted the CEO search process. We look forward to their continued support and partnership," said Michael Bender, a board director at Kohl's.

Kohl's close to naming Tom Kingsbury as permanent CEO - NYT

Jan 25 (Reuters) - Department store chain Kohl's Corp (KSS.N) is in late-stage talks to name Tom Kingsbury as its permanent chief executive, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the situation. Kingsbury was named interim CEO in December, after Michelle Gass left Kohl's to become the top boss at Levi Strauss & Co (LEVI.N). The appointment will come as the department store chain is struggling with declining sales and greater pressure from activist investors. In November, Kohl's withdrew its 2022 sales and profit forecasts, blaming an uncertain economic outlook and the departure of Gass.
