Male Kindergarten Teachers Are Here to Help. Many studies show that older boys benefit from having male teachers. There hasn’t been as much research on the youngest students and their teachers — in large part because there are so few male teachers in early education to begin with. Social-emotional learning has given them vocabulary to express their feelings, said Greg Smedley-Warren, 45, a kindergarten teacher in Nashville. “It’s like unlocking a new market of potential educators.”The male kindergarten teachers said that from their perspective, the fulfillment of the job generally outweighed the negatives.

The "Roaring 20s" are back and set take the S&P 500 to new heights, market vet Ed Yardeni says. The Yardeni Research president predicted the benchmark index could hit 8,000 by the end of this decade. Then there is the ever-growing investor excitement about the potential of artificial intelligence, which has carried mega-cap tech stocks steadily higher over the last 18 months. “We’re constantly innovating, constantly bringing excitement to the brand, and we’re fresh, fresh daily,” said CEO Josh Charlesworth on a first-quarter earnings call in May, according to a transcript made available by FactSet. But fans had a few words for Krispy Kreme on that score. “This is where I am just confused by the decision making process,” noted one commenter under an Instagram post by “Snackolator“ about the release. Krispy Kreme has launched its own share of US-exclusive doughnuts, including its most recent collaboration with singer Dolly Parton, the Southern Sweets Doughnut Collection, announced in May. A representative for Krispy Kreme declined to comment on whether the “Friends” collaboration would be made available in the US and told CNN there was “nothing additional to share at this time.”

Debates over antisemitism have flared for months on college campuses, in local government meetings and in Congress, in many cases boiling down to bitter disagreements over what is, and what is not, antisemitism. There was no such argument five and a half years ago in Pittsburgh. When 11 worshipers were killed at the Tree of Life synagogue on Oct. 27, 2018, the gunman who carried out the massacre was blunt in his bigotry, declaring beforehand on social media that he was acting out of a conviction that Jewish people were conspiring to replace the white race. On Sunday, members of the Tree of Life congregation will gather to break ground for a memorial and a new Tree of Life building. It is a story that has gotten more complicated to tell since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the war that has followed.

President Biden is at Camp David, the presidential country retreat, for the weekend. The presidential campaign is entering a crucial phase. Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump will face off in an unusually early debate on CNN on Thursday as polls reflect a tightening race. Thomas and Sharon Brazil were sitting in their car late Friday morning in front of the only grocery store in Fordyce, Ark., discussing what they wanted to buy to put on the grill that night. He looked at them, Mr. Brazil said, “and he shot.” Mr. Brazil, a 65-year-old minister, was shot in the forehead above his right eye. I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

Read previewAmerica's stimulus-fueled shopping spree looks just about over — and lower spending could be a signal that a consumer-led downturn is on the horizon, economic experts say. Retail spending ticked 0.1% higher in May, but sales volume has dropped 1.3% year-over-year over the last three months, US Census data shows. That adds to a 4% decline in retail sales in the first quarter — and it's a strong sign the long-awaited consumer recession is on the horizon, economist David Rosenberg said recently. "Early signs of a consumer recession finally coming to the fore." AdvertisementThe US has 52% chance of slipping into recession by May of next year, according to projections from the New York Fed.

Opinion | The Rise of Progressivism Among the Educated Elite
  + stars: | 2024-06-22 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “The Sins of the Educated Class,” by David Brooks (column, June 7):Mr. Brooks’s insightful column omits one problem. Many “elite” parents and students have never really interacted with “real” average Americans. Don’t only blame the students for their attitudes and behaviors; they are built into our societal structure. Current scholars at elite schools are deprived of the great daily lessons and educational opportunities that I had. Those who take advantage of such experiences would benefit greatly, and so would the country.

In April 2019, David Ginsberg, a Meta executive, emailed his boss, Mark Zuckerberg, with a proposal to research and reduce loneliness and compulsive use on Instagram and Facebook. In the email, Mr. Ginsberg noted that the company faced scrutiny for its products’ impacts “especially around areas of problematic use/addiction and teens.” He asked Mr. Zuckerberg for 24 engineers, researchers and other staff, saying Instagram had a “deficit” on such issues. A week later, Susan Li, now the company’s chief financial officer, informed Mr. Ginsberg that the project was “not funded” because of staffing constraints. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, ultimately declined to finance the project, too.

Trump will address a gathering of Christian conservatives Saturday afternoon in Washington, DC, before traveling to Philadelphia for a more traditional campaign rally in a key battleground. Trump’s campaign is relishing the juxtaposition of the two candidates’ preparation styles. “While Joe Biden’s advisors force him to hide away at Camp David for some much-needed rest, President Trump is keeping up with his busy campaign schedule,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. The Biden campaign slammed Trump’s appearance at the Washington event as proof of where he stands on the issue. The Trump campaign has sought to drive a wedge between Biden and his birth state by hammering the president over inflation and crime.

Organizers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics plan to hold swimming in the home of the NFL’s Rams and Chargers — and softball and canoe slalom in Oklahoma. That’s according to an amended venue plan unveiled Friday by LA28, the 2028 Games’ organizing committee. It will be the largest swimming venue in Games history, per LA28, with 38,000 seats. LA28 organizers faced one complication with the SoFi swimming plan, however: The stadium is also set to be part of the Games’ opening ceremonies. The venue plan adjustments are in part due to new arenas that have become available for use and a previously assigned venue that became unavailable, LA28 said.

CNN —Same-sex sexual behavior has been observed in more than 1,500 animal species, but a new study has found that it is massively underreported by researchers. Observations of this same-sex behavior in animals, such as sexual mounting and genital touching, date back to the 1700s and 1800s. In a study published Thursday in the journal PLOSOne, a team of researchers at the University of Toronto, Northwestern University and the University of Warsaw found that experts who study animal behavior are underreporting and rarely publishing their observations of same-sex sexual behavior. The study surveyed 65 experts and found that 77% of them observed same-sex sexual behaviors in the species they studied. Davis added that there have been other obstacles that get in the way of documenting same-sex behaviors among animals.

Opinion | Is Missouri About to Execute an Innocent Man?

On June 4, the Missouri Supreme Court set a September execution date for a man named Marcellus Williams. Williams is most likely innocent of the charges against him. On Aug. 11, 1998, a 42-year-old former Saint Louis Post-Dispatch reporter named Felicia Anne Gayle was found stabbed to death in her home. She’d been stabbed 43 times; her husband found her with the knife still in her neck. Despite the media coverage and the intense interest in the case, the murder went unsolved for 15 months, until the police charged Williams with the crime.

Some concerning candle patterns for leading technology names have caused me to focus on potential downside targets for the S & P 500 . To be clear, this is a short-term pattern, and is really just intended to inform our thinking for the next couple trading sessions. The most important level to watch is S & P 5,200, which would represent about a 5% pullback from the recent market peak. A move below S & P 5200 would cause me to revisit long positions and start to raise cash due to an elevated risk of a correction. If and when the S & P pushes below 4950, I would be positioned way more defensively, waiting for some signs of accumulation to emerge.

Conan O’Brien Doesn’t Matter*
  + stars: | 2024-06-21 | by ( Jason Zinoman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
After hosting talk shows for nearly three decades, Conan O’Brien has come to believe that longevity is overrated. “We don’t matter.”Since leaving late-night television in 2021, Conan O’Brien, 61, has become more reflective about life (and death), given to philosophical flights of fancy that he compulsively alternates with comic tangents. O’Brien famously champions the intersection between smart and stupid, but in conversation, what stands out is how quickly he moves between light and heavy. “Being contented comes in little moments, here and there.”The only thing trickier than being a late-night talk show host is being a former one. Since he started writing for “Saturday Night Live” in the 1980s, Conan O’Brien has built one of the most consequential careers in comedy.

The United States and China resumed semi-official nuclear arms talks in March for the first time in five years, with Beijing's representatives telling U.S. counterparts that they would not resort to atomic threats over Taiwan, according to two American delegates who attended. The Chinese representatives offered reassurances after their U.S. interlocutors raised concerns that China might use, or threaten to use, nuclear weapons if it faced defeat in a conflict over Taiwan. The two countries briefly resumed Track One talks over nuclear arms in November but those negotiations have since stalled, with a top U.S. official publicly expressing frustration at China's responsiveness. The Pentagon, which estimates that Beijing's nuclear arsenal increased by more than 20% between 2021 and 2023, said in October that China "would also consider nuclear use to restore deterrence if a conventional military defeat in Taiwan" threatened CCP rule.
