A cohort of more than 100,000 people used accelerometers to capture their movement over the course of a week, the study said. Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. “Even for me, if I have a crazy something or other going on, I might concentrate more on a weekend,” Freeman said. One study from 2021 found that as little as 11 minutes a day can increase your life span. On the days you miss a workout, Freeman encourages making sure to make up the time later in the week to get the 150 minutes.

New York CNN —For being less than two years old, Prime energy and sport drinks are already enduring a major growth spurt. Prime’s portfolioThe duo’s first drink, Hydration, is a Gatorade-like sports drink that mixes coconut water and electrolytes, without sugar or caffeine. In 2013, a Senate panel held a similar hearing with top energy drinks. “It will be interesting to see how the Prime crew alters their pitch, or the branding on the energy drink to move it away from potential confusion with the sports drink, if there’s a hearing,” he said. Meanwhile, Prime Energy has raked in around $42.5 million this year, according to Circana data given to BevNet.

The Best Debit Cards for Kids and Teens

Banks, credit unions, financial technology companies and even investment firms all offer debit cards geared toward under 18-year-olds. With Greenlight, children receive a physical debit card with their name on it. In addition to its abundance of customizable features, Greenlight also rises above other kids debit cards thanks to the educational tools and games included in its app. This is possible because the Step Visa Card is not technically a debit card, though it functions very similarly. How we pickedTo pick Buy Side from WSJ’s Best Debit Cards for Kids and Teens, we looked at card options available to those under the age of 18, including prepaid debit cards, checking account-linked debit cards, secured credit cards and brokerage account-linked debit cards.

Opinion | Why Platonic Friendships Are So Hard to Keep
  + stars: | 2023-07-01 | by ( Jessica Grose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
It wasn’t until watching the show that I realized that all the close male friendships I had in my 20s have sort of fallen away. My husband has similar relationships to his opposite-sex friends. Part of this perception is because opposite-sex friendships are so new, historically speaking. As William Deresiewicz wrote in an essay for Times Opinion in 2012, “Friendship between the sexes was more or less unknown in traditional society. But part of the perception that there might be something untoward going to between heterosexual, opposite-sex friends is grounded in psychological reality.

And Walls, while appealing, can’t get within striking distance of Snipes’ intensity. The script by Barris and Hall, both veterans of the television sitcom “black-ish,” does the actors no favors. The basketball action is similar to the script, that is, indifferently staged and shot. This movie not only doesn’t jump, it barely gets off the couch. White Men Can’t JumpRated R for, what else, language.
But the pandemic really helped clarify which types of things were healthy and which were harmful. We talk with families about the idea that not all screen time is created equal. My growing concern is that even the best types of screen use displace the actual material world around us. I’ve heard Jonathan Haidt call screens “experience blockers” — putting a screen in your kid’s hand prohibits them from experiencing the world, whether it’s relationships or enjoying creation or whatever. Every time you push your toddler through Target and they start having a tantrum, it’s so tempting to want to hand them a screen.

Netflix Freeloaders Really Have to Kick In Now

A Netflix series spotlighted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Much now rides on the streaming giant’s ability to get something from your kid’s roommate’s brother. First-quarter results from Netflix on Tuesday were a decidedly mixed bag. But Netflix added only 1.75 million new paid subscribers during the quarter, which was 20% below what analysts had expected. It said subscriber growth in the second quarter would be roughly similar to what it just reported—less than half the 4.1 million net new subscribers analysts were expecting for the period.

While my kids aren’t the pickiest eaters I’ve ever encountered, they both have long, evolving lists of likes and dislikes. In that spirit, I asked readers of our Five Weeknight Dishes newsletter to tell us about the New York Times Cooking recipes their kids request on repeat, the meals that make them do a little happy dance when they hear they’re on the menu. What’s beloved one day might be detested the next, and one kid’s favorite dish could make another gag. ‘M3gan’ Review: She Walks, Talks and Kills
  + stars: | 2023-01-06 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +2 min
In “M3gan,” the titular gadget—a “Model 3 Generative Android” that looks like the lost Olsen sister—teaches a little girl proper bathroom procedure with military rigor while the kid’s guardian occupies herself with more diverting activities. All things considered, some parents might be willing to overlook the cuddly robot’s shortcomings, such as a sarcastic streak and a tendency to commit homicide. “M3gan,” a mildly scary movie built around a valid underlying fear, became a social-media phenomenon months before it was released thanks to the killer dance moves exhibited by its title figure. Bored by the demands of a small child and pressured by her volcanically demanding boss ( Ronny Chieng ) to create a next-level toy, Gemma solves both problems by programming a lifelike ambulatory doll that, learning from feedback, can read emotions and take part in spontaneous conversations exhibiting real emotional intelligence. Within a distressingly short period of time, however, M3gan starts to turn self-aware, posing questions like, “Will I die?”

How High Will CD Rates Go in 2023?
  + stars: | 2022-12-01 | by ( ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +6 min
Whether or not CD rates will continue to rise in 2023 depends a lot on what the Fed does to fight inflation, with higher inflation likely higher interest rates. Where will CD rates go in 2023? There is no direct relationship between CD rates and those set by the Federal Reserve, since banks can offer whatever interest rates they wish. And that means that CD rates likely have a little room to rise, but not a whole lot. While CD rates continually shift, it’s now possible to find rates of between 4% and 5% from well-known institutions like Capital One, BMO Harris, Synchrony and more.

BEIJING — The father of a 3-year-old boy who died this week from carbon monoxide poisoning in northwest China said strict Covid-19 policies “indirectly killed” his son by causing delays obtaining treatment, in a case that has set off social media outrage. The boy’s death on Tuesday is the latest incident to generate blowback over China’s strict zero-Covid policy, with one critical hashtag racking up 380 million reads on Wednesday on the Twitter-like Weibo platform. “I personally think that he was indirectly killed,” the boy’s father, Tuo Shilei, told Reuters by phone from the Gansu provincial capital, Lanzhou, which has been under lockdowns for several months. At around midday on Tuesday, after his wife slipped and fell after being affected by gas fumes while cooking, Tuo noticed that his son, Wenxuan, was also unwell. One hashtag, “Three years of Covid was his entire life” became a trending topic before being scrubbed, a common occurence on China’s heavily censored internet.
CNN —Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has announced his retirement from football, saying Saturday’s game against Almería will be his last. The defender played 615 games – including 396 in the Spanish league and 126 in the Champions League – with Barcelona, winning eight La Liga title and the Champions League three times. This season, Piqué has fallen down the pecking order as Barcelona attempt to transition to a new era, meaning he’s found his playing time limited. Outside of football, Piqué became the owner of Andorran club, FC Andorra, in 2018. Last season, the club – which plays in the Spanish league system – was promoted to the second tier of Spanish football for the first time in its history.
CNN —When author Jeff Kinney started writing the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series more than 15 years ago, he set out to create a comic that would resonate with adults and live in the humor section of book stores. “I’m really glad that I didn’t know that I was writing for kids because I think that oftentimes when an adult writes a kid’s book, they start with the lesson in mind. And so the priority of the book becomes the lesson,” Kinney recalled in a recent interview with CNN. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” has sold more than 275 million copies, according to its publisher, with book number 17 in the series, “Diper Överlöde,” releasing Oct. 25. Kinney's next "Wimpy Kid" book, "Diper Överlöde," releases on Oct. 25.
