CNN —A 65-year-old Israeli woman who was kidnapped by Hamas militants on October 7 has been found dead near Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, the Israeli military said Thursday. The body of Yehudit Weiss, a resident of kibbutz Be’eri, was found by Israeli soldiers in Gaza City and brought back to Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. The IDF said her body had been recovered from what it called a “structure” near to the Al-Shifa hospital, where the IDF on Wednesday launched what it called a “precise and targeted” operation against Hamas, which it says has been using the hospital for military purposes. Hamas and hospital officials have consistently rejected Israel’s claims that Hamas has built a command center under the hospital. The Hostages and Missing Person’s Families Forum, a group established by the families of those abducted by Hamas, said Weiss was a 65-year-old grandmother.

After traveling around Israel and the West Bank, I now understand why so much has changed. It is crystal clear to me that Israel is in real danger — more danger than at any time since its War of Independence in 1948. Last Saturday night, a retired Israeli Army commander stopped by my hotel in Tel Aviv to share his perspective on the war. Consider this context: “According to Israel’s official Central Bureau of Statistics, at the end of 2021, 9.449 million people live in Israel (including Israelis in West Bank settlements), the Times of Israel reported last year. Let me not mince words, because the hour is dark and Israel, as I said, is in real danger.

Rescue missionIt was around 4 p.m. when Menachem Klemenson got a four-word WhatsApp message from his brother Elhanan: “Packing, going down south,” it read. As the Klemensons and their nephew drove around extracting families, kibbutz residents jumped out of their hiding places. I am a father.”In the girl’s case, as with the bodies of other kibbutz residents the trio found, they did not know their identities, nor was Reuters able to identify them. “Either you leave the dog or I shoot it,” Menachem recalls his brother Elhanan saying. Politicians and the military had violated a fundamental compact with the residents of Be’eri, said kibbutz secretary Pauker.

EIN BOKEK, Israel (AP) — For evacuees of Kibbutz Be’eri, the salty waters of the lowest point on earth, known for their healing powers, are little comfort for a grief that feels bottomless. Kibbutz leaders recite the names that have officially migrated from lists of the missing to lists of the dead. Only 3,000 hotel rooms across the country are still available, according to the Israel Hotel Association, and many evacuated border communities have scattered to find shelter. Kibbutz Be'eri, too, is named after Katznelson. "But where were they?”___Sam McNeil contributed from Kibbutz Be'eri.

This July 1938 shows workers in the orange grove of the Na'an kibbutz. Deganya, which is still inhabited today, is considered Israel’s first kibbutz. But the kibbutzniks, as kibbutz residents are known, are still largely viewed as left-leaning. Israeli forces extract dead bodies of Israeli residents from a destroyed house in Kfar Aza on Tuesday. Neta is missing from Be’eri kibbutz, a community of about 1,000 near Gaza known for its successful printing press and art galleries, where more than 100 bodies have been found.

CNN —More than 100 bodies have been found in the Israeli kibbutz Be’eri, as details gradually emerge of the horror that unfolded as Palestinian Hamas militants launched their deadly surprise attack. Civilians were killed and taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities and videos obtained and authenticated by CNN. Footage shows militants pulling three bodies out of a car, before stealing the vehicle and driving north. Another video shows armed militants taking five Israeli civilians captive, with the bodies of four later seen lying on the ground nearby in another video verified by CNN. Of the 107 bodies discovered in the aftermath, most were of local residents of the kibbutz, though some were of Israeli security forces, a search and rescue spokesperson told CNN.
