LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday described American XL Bully dogs as a “danger to our communities” and announced plans to ban the breed following a public outcry after a series of recent attacks. Sunak said he has asked government ministers to bring together police and canine experts to legally define the characteristics of the American XL Bully, which is not recognized as a breed by groups such as the Kennel Club in Britain or the American Kennel Club in the United States. “The American XL Bully dog is a danger to our communities, particularly our children,’’ Sunak said. Some campaigners have called for the American XL Bully, which was originally bred from the American pit bull terrier, to be added to the list because they believe dangerous characteristics have been bred into the animals. The XL Bully is not recognized as a breed by the U.K.’s Kennel Club, which has argued that no breed of dog is inherently dangerous.

CNN —Does your pup love peanut butter? Natural pet wellness company Honest Paws is seeking canine ambassadors to represent its own peanut butter product, according to a news release. Dogs can enjoy peanut butter regularly, but experts advise avoiding peanut butter that contains xylitol, a sugar-free substitute that is highly toxic for pets, according to the National Peanut Board. Honest Paws says its peanut butter pouches do not contain the ingredient, according to its website. Applications for the canine ambassador role are open until September 1, according to Honest Paws.

A six-year-old male from Palm Springs, California, Buddy Holly became the first of his breed to win. "Buddy Holly is the epitome of the dog show." 9 Stylish Dogs at Westminster

The Met Gala for dogs, otherwise known as the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, took place on Tuesday. Best in show went to Buddy Holly, a “fetchingly bewhiskered” petit basset griffon Vendéen. Although our Most Styles-ish roundups usually highlight adventurous fashion moments among humans, we decided to extend the same courtesy to our canine compatriots on their big night. The nine dogs recognized below may not have won, but they captured our attention out of a field of more than 2,500 competitors. We may not be qualified to judge a dog show, but we know flair when we see it.
Striker Will Never Know He Wasn’t Best in Show

TORONTO — No one watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last year could have missed Striker the Samoyed, a blindingly white confection of fluff and enthusiasm who stole the show with his goofy joie de vivre. Sadly for his fans, Striker lost in the final round, defeated by a lugubriously dignified bloodhound and a perky little French bulldog. “Hell, no,” said Judi Elford, Striker’s breeder and, with Marc Ralsky and Correen Pacht, his co-owner. “Does he care that he did not win best in show at Westminster? But he is still a champion, and he is still busy — playing, romping, posing and shedding at the home he shares with Pacht and Ralsky in north Toronto.

It still isn’t Madison Square Garden, but at least the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is back in New York City. Just a 7 train ride away from Midtown, champion dogs invaded the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens, this weekend for the 147th edition of the competition, which organizers claim is the second oldest continuously held sporting event in the United States. The very good dogs (they are all very good dogs) competed in agility and obedience championships over the weekend before moving to two days of judging to determine the best in each breed and group and, of course, best in show, which will be judged Tuesday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

On a cold February day more than two decades ago, Ted Eubank, a dog breeder from Texas, stepped into the ring at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show for the first time. The crowd around the ring was 10 people deep, he recalled recently. In the years since, Mr. Eubank has become a seasoned Westminster competitor; his Cavaliers, including one indomitable champion named Rocky, have been named the best of their breed several times. But on Monday, Mr. Eubank will be a rookie again when he makes his debut as a Westminster judge. He expects to feel a familiar flutter when he steps into the ring.
For the first time in 31 years, the United States has a new favorite dog breed. The American Kennel Club released its 2022 registration statistics and found that after being the most popular dog breed for three decades, the Labrador Retriever was outranked by the French Bulldog. According to a press release, the French Bulldog has spiked in popularity over the last 10 years. In 2012, the breed was the 14th most popular and jumped to no. Registrations have also increased by over 1,000% from 2012 to 2022.
2 spot the previous year, according to the club, which maintains the largest registry of purebred dog pedigrees in the country. They're great companions, cute and show great affection," said breeder Johnny Danley Jr., of Atlanta. But we sell to blue-collar, 9-to-5 people who want to spend a little for a great companion," Danley said. The breed's rising popularity - and price tag - has led to a surge in French bulldog thefts in recent years, according to the club. The former top dog, the even-tempered Labrador retriever, still has plenty of fans, as it slipped a notch to the No.
"But senior dogs are so lovely, and it's well worth the cost to go the extra mile for them." Whatever furry friend happens to be snoozing on your couch, caring for senior dogs can get pricey. ASK FOR HELPIf your senior dog needs a medical treatment you just cannot afford, do not give up hope. The same principles apply to your furry companion, which is why one solution is a "savings account specifically set aside for your pet's medical care," said Dr. Melvin. "I can't wait for my next senior dog, because they are so precious," she said.
Four dogs fatally attacked a boy in Idaho on Saturday and caused injuries to his mother, leading the dogs to be put down and their owners to be cited with 15 local violations, police said. Both the boy and his mother — neither of whom are tribal members — suffered injuries and were transported to the Portneuf Medical Center, about 13 miles south. Their relationship to the dogs' owners was not immediately clear. A GoFundMe page identifies the mother as Emily and the boy who died as Kellan, and states Emily "did everything in her power to protect Kellan from that attack." There is no federal dangerous dog law, according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, so it is unclear what federal charges, if any, the dogs' owners could face.
Emily Brill might be the most hated woman in the pet industry. Now, Brill — the preppy blond daughter of the media magnate Steven Brill — is reinventing herself as the founder of the dog-centric publication The Canine Review. Courtesy of Emily Brill Show less One reader even threatened to cancel their subscription because of the so-called bird-massacre photo shoot. Courtesy of Emily Brill Show less Brill says the photos reassure readers that "I'm not a stereotypical sort of Manhattan, head-up-my-ass, agenda, PETA person." It isn't a bad start, but "she's got a long way to go to make it really thrive," Steven Brill told Insider.
LOS ANGELES — The man involved in the shooting of Lady Gaga's dog walker during a robbery last year was sentenced Monday to 21 years in prison, officials said. James Howard Jackson, 20, pleaded no contest to the attempted murder charge and was immediately sentenced to prison, NBC Los Angeles reported. In August, almost four months after he was mistakenly freed from custody in Los Angeles, Jackson was captured and arrested in Palmdale, a city north of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Those charges were dropped with the plea entered Monday, NBC Los Angeles reported. Eric Leonard reported from Los Angeles, Antonio Planas reported from New York.
The remains of sausage dogs were found in the 2,000-year-old drains of the Colosseum. Archaeologists said they might have been made to fight bears or perform acrobatics in ancient Rome. "We found many bones from dogs which were similar to the modern sausage dog," Alfonsina Russo, director of the Colosseum, told The Telegraph. The dogs would have been ancestors of sausage dogs rather than true dachshunds, the paper noted. The Colosseum archaeologists also found the bones of large dogs, leopards, lions, bears, and ostriches in the ancient drains.
An 80-year-old California woman was mauled to death by two dogs while out for a walk on Friday morning, officials said. Soon Han was out for a walk in San Bernardino County when two Dogo Argentino breed dogs from a nearby home attacked her, according to a statement from the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station. "Han suffered major injuries during the attack and was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said in the statement. The two dogs responsible for the attack are in custody of San Bernardino County Animal Care & Control, where they'll be held until the investigation into the incident is over. The Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station is encouraging anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
Admission prices for museums, movies, concerts, theme parks and other cultural activities were 6.2% higher last month than they were in August last year, federal data show. More ways to get free or discounted museum admissionsIf you miss Museum Day this weekend, don’t worry. Some sites, like Chicago’s Field Museum, offer state residents free entry on select days.
