Last Wednesday, a Gen Alpha girl named Brooklyn made her older sister Liv Kaplan feel out of touch when she informed her that a slew of Gen Z and millennial slang, from "bae" to "pop off" to "slay," is no longer cool. Perhaps most surprisingly, to call someone a best friend, Brooklyn said Gen Alpha doesn't use "bff" as much as "bsf." (Though some commenters disputed this detail and accused Gen Alpha of "gentrifying" the word GYAT by turning it from a way to say "god damn" into an acronym.) @livkaplan Replying to @Noah Schnapp ASKING MY GEN ALPHA LITTLE SISTER WHAT SLANG IS IN PART 2 💋✨ @BROOKLYN ♬ original sound - Liv KaplanIn a follow-up video, Brooklyn provided more Gen Alpha-friendly phrases. She also said Gen Alpha uses words like "cap," a way to say you think someone is lying, and "ate," meaning metaphorically to devour a look or moment (e.g., "you ate that outfit").

AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen Sassoon asked Bankman-Fried directly if he discussed spending FTX customer deposits with his lawyers, he took a long pause and looked down before he answered the question. Sassoon, questioning Bankman-Fried on the witness stand, asked Bankman-Fried to be more explicit about why he thought that explanation was acceptable. Asked directly by Sassoon if it was OK to steal customer funds, Bankman-Fried rejected that interpretation of events. Sassoon made that clear on Thursday as Kaplan asked for a broad timeline of the rest of the trial.

Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan challenged Trump's lawyer Michael Madaio during oral arguments in Trump's appeals of pivotal rulings by U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan. Carroll's lawyer Joshua Matz rejected any suggestion that Trump could not waive absolute immunity because "broader structural considerations" were at play. "A party who believes that they are holding onto absolute immunity from suit does not behave the way that Mr. Trump behaved it his case." The appeals court did not say when it will rule. The appeals court could order Trump to pay damages and costs if it ends up agreeing with the judge.

Last year, he presided over a civil trial in which the actor Kevin Spacey defeated a sexual abuse claim. When one prospective juror said they did not understand how cryptocurrency works, Kaplan said, "You probably have a lot of company in this courtroom." Several times during the first three days of testimony, Kaplan urged defense lawyers to move more quickly as they asked prosecution witnesses questions he deemed repetitive. Before the trial began, Kaplan issued several key rulings against the defense, including excluding some of their proposed expert witnesses and barring them from making certain arguments at trial.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Sam Bankman-Fried, the indicted founder of now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, may face a "very long sentence" if convicted at his fraud trial starting next week, the judge overseeing the case said on Thursday. Kaplan said Bankman-Fried was a flight risk. "Your client in the event of conviction could be looking at a very long sentence," Kaplan said in a hearing in Manhattan federal court. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of fraud and conspiracy stemming from FTX's collapse in November 2022. Trump is appealing the May 9 jury verdict, as well as Kaplan's June 29 refusal to dismiss the current lawsuit, to the 2nd U.S. REPUTATIONAL HARMIn his 25-page decision, Kaplan said the May 9 jury verdict eliminated the need to relitigate the alleged attack. Kaplan also said the verdict precluded Trump from arguing that his June 2019 statements, which were similar to his October 2022 statements, were not defamatory. On Aug. 18, Judge Kaplan called Trump's appeal of his decision to let the second case go to trial "frivolous." In his June 2019 statements, Trump also disparaged Carroll by saying "she's not my type" and the alleged rape "never happened."

E. Jean Carroll, who accused former President Donald Trump of rape, arrives at Manhattan Federal Court for the continuation of the civil case, in New York City, May 9, 2023. The 25-page decision in U.S. District Court in Manhattan is the latest in a series of big losses for Trump in lawsuits filed by Carroll. But Kaplan found that Carroll was entitled to a partial summary judgment on the question of Trump's liability in the case. Trump is appealing Judge Kaplan's dismissal of his own claim that Carroll defamed the former president when she reiterated her claim that Trump had raped her. The DOJ had argued that Trump was acting within the scope of his office as president when he made the statements about Carroll.

REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Sam Bankman-Fried on Friday rejected as "entirely inadequate" the U.S. government's plan for letting the jailed founder of the collapsed FTX cryptocurrency exchange prepare for his October fraud trial. Bankman-Fried's lawyers asked that he be allowed to meet with them five days a week at the Manhattan federal courthouse in preparation for the Oct. 2 trial. The Brooklyn jail, with about 1,549 inmates, has been plagued by conditions that public defenders have called "inhumane." A federal judge suggested in 2021 that the jail and a now-closed federal jail in Manhattan were "run by morons." Bankman-Fried's lawyers previously represented Ghislaine Maxwell, the former girlfriend of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who complained for months that she could not prepare effectively in the Brooklyn jail for her sex trafficking trial.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. federal judge on Friday denied former President Donald Trump's fourth attempt to delay the trial date in a defamation case against him brought by the writer E. Jean Carroll. U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan, in a 17-page order, said Trump's request to stay the case while he appealed a previous ruling from the same court failed to meet any of the criteria under which a delay would typically be granted. The trial is currently set to begin on Monday, Jan. 15, the same day as the first-in-the-nation nominating contest in Iowa. If the current timeline holds through January, then the trial in federal district court in the Southern District of New York will most likely begin the following day, Jan. 16. As the defamation case wound its way through the legal system, Carroll sued Trump again in 2022 under a different statute, accusing him of both sexual abuse and defamation.

Sam Bankman-Fried will head to jail on Friday after a judge sided with a request by federal prosecutors to revoke the FTX founder's bail over alleged witness tampering. Judge Lewis Kaplan denied Bankman-Fried's request for delayed detention pending an appeal. "My conclusion is there is probable cause to believe the defendant tried to tamper with witnesses at least twice," said Judge Kaplan during his ruling. Judge Kaplan previously issued a direct and stern warning to Bankman-Fried in July over his conversations with the media. It is an argument that proved sufficient to convince Judge Kaplan to send Bankman-Fried to jail ahead of his trial.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Michael Kaplan in Trenton, New Jersey, ruled that a J&J company's second bankruptcy, like its first, must be dismissed because the talc lawsuits did not put it in immediate "financial distress." J&J's first bankruptcy gambit began in 2021, when it offloaded its talc liabilities into a new company, LTL Management, and immediately placed that company into bankruptcy. Attorneys representing cancer victims, along with the U.S. Justice Department's bankruptcy watchdog, had called for LTL's second bankruptcy to be dismissed as an abuse of U.S. bankruptcy law. Andy Birchfield, an attorney who represents cancer victims, said the second bankruptcy was meant to keep the talc lawsuits from being heard by juries. J&J argued that the proposed bankruptcy settlement offers a fairer and faster resolution for cancer claimants than litigation in other courts.

A jury found that Donald Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll but not that he raped her. The judge says Trump "raped" Carroll "as many people commonly understand the word 'rape.'" The jury did not, Trump's lawyers trumpeted at the time, find that Trump "raped" Carroll — the central part of her allegations. Caroll's lawsuit alleged that, in the mid-1990s, Trump raped her in the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan.
