TikTok Feeds Teens a Diet of Darkness
  + stars: | 2023-05-14 | by ( Julie Jargon | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Calls to ban TikTok in the U.S. are growing louder. Government leaders are trying to keep the popular China-owned social video platform away from schools, public workers, even entire states, on the grounds that users’ data could wind up in the wrong hands. Data privacy, though, might be less worrisome than the power of TikTok’s algorithm. Especially if you’re a parent.
Years ago, teens worried about who was hanging out without them. Today, teens know it for sure. Addison Figel was at home on a Saturday night last month when she decided to see what everyone else was up to. She opened Snapchat and checked the Snap Map, which shows where friends are in real time. A group of them was at another girl’s house attending a birthday party.

The certainties in life are death and taxes, right? Now that tax season is over, it’s time to turn your attention to the other one. People often arrange for who gets their money, real estate and physical belongings when they die. But what about the digital assets we accumulate in a lifetime—photos, social-media accounts and more?

The Hottest Tech Topics Among Older AdultsA retirement community in Lancaster, Pa., is integrating tech more and more into the lives of their residents, proving what experts on aging have been saying for years: Older adults are just as keen on new technologies as anyone else. New, lower-price hearing aids promise to help people with mild to moderate hearing loss. But when you buy one, how well does it work out? Six months ago, over-the-counter hearing aids began showing up in retail stores and websites following a new rule by the Food and Drug Administration. They offer an attractive alternative to doctor-prescribed hearing aids, which can cost $5,000 or more and come with a deeper commitment.

The residents of a retirement community in the heart of Amish country are proving what experts on aging have been saying for years: Older adults are as keen on new technologies as anyone else. Willow Valley Communities, a 2,600-resident campus in Lancaster, Pa., has a tech center staffed by volunteers. People can drop in for tech help or get their computers fixed. It also has an active computer club and an Apple products group that offer resident-taught classes.
When Skye Hermans approached his parents last month about getting an electric bike, it set off a weekslong discussion: Was this 12-year-old ready to make the switch from a mountain bike to a motorized one? Some of Skye’s friends have e-bikes and he wants to keep up with them during rides. He researched how fast different e-bikes go, how long they take to charge and how far he could go on the battery. Jenna and Kyle Hermans , who run a business-consulting firm in San Anselmo, Calif., began conducting their own due diligence. The more they learned, the more questions they had.
Why Does Instagram Think I’m Unhealthy?
  + stars: | 2023-03-11 | by ( Julie Jargon | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Judging by the ads Instagram is constantly showing me, you’d think I’m falling apart. The deluge of sponsored posts in my feed suggests I need to take supplements to balance my hormones, get a device to monitor my blood glucose, consult an app to supercharge my metabolism, use red-light therapy to lose weight and smear on cream to eliminate my wrinkles.

There are two ways to track car and home maintenance: my way…and the right way. My way involves looking at the oil-change sticker on my windshield every once in a while and changing the batteries in my smoke detectors when they start chirping. Organized people do things differently. I am trying to learn their ways.
Why I’m Not Writing About Kids and Screen Time Anymore
  + stars: | 2023-02-25 | by ( Julie Jargon | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
This is my final column on kids’ screen time. By now, screen dangers are well established. Numerous studies have shown that kids shouldn’t watch hours of brainless garbage on their iPads. A new study found that 1-year-olds who watched a lot of TV had a harder time paying attention by the time they were 9. (My five screen commandments come later in this column.)
