SYDNEY—The England women’s national team had spent a couple of years doing its best to show that it was unburdened by a soccer history of near misses and epic collapses.
Unlike the men’s team, which hasn’t won a major trophy since 1966, the Lionesses were proving to be serial winners.
They outmuscled opponents, swaggered through tournaments, and, last summer, became European champions.
