“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (now in theaters) is the first film in that franchise not directed by Steven Spielberg, who developed the character all those years ago with George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, as well as the screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. Yet the handoff of directorial duties to James Mangold doesn’t feel like a strain, because Spielberg established the character of the globe-trotting archaeologist and the style of his cinematic escapades so adroitly over the first four films. In fact, he set them in stone in the very first sequence of the very first movie — as we can see in a shot-by-shot look that classic sequence today. We first see Indiana Jones less than 30 seconds into 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — but it’s a carefully prepared hero entrance, holding back Harrison Ford’s distinctive visage as long as possible. Instead, we first see him from the back, in a frame that nevertheless introduces the character and his distinctive iconography (his hat, bullwhip and jacket).

You couldn’t pass a Borders or Barnes & Noble megastore without catching Bridget’s cool blue-green gaze. Seemingly overnight, Bridget was to digital correspondence what Chandler Bing was to comic timing: a fresh metronome for the last gasp of the 20th century. She was the toast of book clubs, the subject of editorials, a lightning rod for morning-show debate and fodder for late-night comedy. Some readers were charmed by Bridget Jones; others were disgusted. That if we don’t enjoy our jobs, we just stick around and, heck, sleep with the boss (who never calls us back).”

If I’d been less successful, I’d probably be a better parent,” he said, adding, “I accept my flaws and my failures. Alex Jones, accompanied by private security guards, arrived in October at the Connecticut Superior Court in Waterbury, Conn.Twitter and Facebook rebuffed subpoenas from families of the Sandy Hook school massacre victims, who were seeking internal company data to show how conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’s false claims about the killings spread on social media, according to court documents and lawyers for the families. The fight last year over access to the social-media platforms’ data played out largely behind the scenes of the legal battle to hold Mr. Jones liable for his claims. The families of the victims in the 2012 massacre, in which a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six educators inside a Newtown, Conn., elementary school, sued Mr. Jones and his companies, including the website Infowars, for defamation. Mr. Jones had claimed the shooting was an elaborate hoax.

When the New York Giants used the No. 6 pick in the draft on quarterback Daniel Jones in 2019, they thought they had found their successor to Eli Manning. Then after a few seasons of middling play, two canned head coaches, in addition to the firing of the general manager who drafted him, a new regime came in before this season and indicated it might be ready to move on without Jones. Entering his fourth season, Jones hadn’t played particularly well and the Giants were among the NFL’s worst teams every year with him under center. Nobody was shocked when new general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll declined to pick up the option on Jones’s contract for 2023.
