Finally, a happy ending to a fraught Triple Crown. Arcangelo thundered down the stretch of the Belmont Stakes to win the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes by a length and a half and made a little history: His trainer, Jena Antonucci, became the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race, a series that spans more than a century. The colt held off a late run by Forte and gave his jockey, Javier Castellano, his first Belmont victory. Castellano, a Hall of Famer, won his first Kentucky Derby five weeks ago aboard Mage. Arcangelo is a 3-year-old ridgeling who cost owner Jon Ebbert of Blue Rose Farm $35,000 as a yearling.

Why the Durham Report Matters to Democracy
  + stars: | 2023-05-16 | by ( The Editorial Board | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The final report by special prosecutor John Durham. Special counsel John Durham ’s final report makes clear that a partisan FBI became a funnel for disinformation from the Hillary Clinton campaign through a secret investigation the bureau never should have launched. The 306-page Durham report released Monday afternoon is far more comprehensive than anything issued by original special counsel Robert Mueller . Mr. Durham had already unfurled some of the narrative with his prosecutions of Russian national Igor Danchenko and Democratic lawyer Michael Sussmann . He lost those cases, though the indictments laid out how the Clinton campaign used foreign nationals, an oppo-research outfit, and political insiders to feed the FBI and the media lies about Trump collusion.
Interior Department on Tuesday removed one of the last remaining obstacles to Lithium Americas Corp's (LAC.TO), Thacker Pass mine project in Nevada by finding nearly all of the site contains the metal used to make electric-vehicle batteries. The opinion from the department's solicitor comes amid an acrimonious debate about whether more U.S. mines should be built to produce lithium and other green energy transition metals. Of the dozens of mining claims at the Thacker Pass site held by the company, the government found fewer than 10 did not contain lithium mineralization, an Interior Department official told Reuters. "They're going to be able to start construction and production without these claims being in the plan of operation," the official said of Lithium Americas. "We're in favor of increasing domestic mineral production when it's being done in the right location and in the right way," the official said.
For the past few decades, state and local governments throughout the U.S. have paid out a total of $2.9 billion to Americans who were wrongly convicted of crimes. Collectively, over 25,000 years have been lost behind bars to the wrongfully convicted, according to recent estimates. Thirty-eight states, the federal government and the District of Columbia all offer exonerees some form of wrongful-conviction compensation. "There's no credit checks, there's no collaterals, there's no guarantees, there's no assets," said Abraham Arouesty, of Tribeca Capital Group, a litigation firm that offers funding for wrongful-conviction cases. The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) (LSEG.L) and UK trade officials visited several cities in China to promote UK capital markets recently. Wilson Xu, a banking veteran from CITIC Securities pioneering the Stock Connect programme, said liquidity will improve when there is a critical mass of Chinese listings. The Shanghai-London Stock Connect was launched in 2019 and the link was expanded last year to include Shenzhen and Switzerland. Even arrangements by SIX to allow roughly 2.5 hours of trading in a session for Chinese GDRs didn't help. Chinese companies, however, have been positive in public disclosures about their forays in Europe which have given them an alternative channel to raise funds and access foreign currency for their operations abroad.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Vietnam Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son in Hanoi on Saturday. HANOI, Vietnam—Secretary of State Antony Blinken broke ground at a new U.S. embassy site during his first visit to Vietnam as America’s top diplomat, with Washington seeking to establish closer relations with a country that has historic ties with both China and Russia. In Communist-led Vietnam, Mr. Blinken didn’t make comments about China, with whom Washington’s relations have worsened. Instead, as with much of Southeast Asia—where governments are wary about picking sides—U.S. officials say they are eager to build practical cooperation based on trade and adhering to agreed upon international rules of the road.
Ford Motor Co. is investing in a $4.5 billion nickel processing facility in Indonesia as the auto maker seeks to secure a supply of key minerals used in electric-vehicle batteries. The project also involves PT Vale Indonesia TBK, which controls a large nickel-mining area on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, and China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co., a leading refiner.
Protesters took part in a rally against Israel in Jakarta earlier this month. FIFA has removed Indonesia as host of the Under-20 soccer World Cup less than two months before the tournament is set to begin, after prominent politicians in the Muslim-majority country objected to Israel’s participation. Israel qualified for the youth tournament for the first time in its history. Indonesia, which doesn’t have diplomatic relations with Israel, was set to host its first FIFA tournament. Preparations had been under way for months, with possible host stadiums narrowed down to six and a mascot selected—a Javanese rhino named Bacuya, whose multicolored horn glowed when he played soccer with others.

An Indonesian court has sentenced Hasdarmawan, a former police commander, to 18 months in prison. A former police commander was found guilty of criminal negligence for his role managing crowd control at a packed Indonesian soccer stadium last year, while two other police officials were acquitted on charges related to the sporting disaster that killed more than 130 people. An Indonesian court sentenced Hasdarmawan, who goes by one name, to 18 months in prison. He had been charged with ordering other officers to fire tear gas. The court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to convict the two acquitted officers.

KUBU RAYA, Indonesia—A decade ago, Indonesia was destroying its tropical rainforest at a faster rate than almost any other country. Virgin forest five times the area of Los Angeles was vanishing every year in one of the earth’s most biologically diverse places, in large part to make way for plantations producing palm oil for consumer goods such as lipstick, pizza dough and shampoo.
Consumers are showing resilience after being squeezed by high inflation, rising interest rates and the end of federal Covid-relief programs. The U.S. economy started the year with surprising vigor, thanks partly to rising household incomes and consumer resilience. Slowing inflation, pay raises negotiated last year, cost-of-living adjustments for retirees and state tax cuts have lined up to lift consumer purchasing power, fortifying spending and economic growth at a time when many analysts were predicting a slowdown or even recession. This marks a turnabout for households that were squeezed last year by high inflation, climbing interest rates and the end of Covid-related federal relief programs.
Lowly, Bitter Coffee Bean Seeks Respect from Caffeine Snobs

For decades the lowly Robusta coffee bean has been anathema to many American coffee companies. Though less expensive than the cherished Arabica bean, Robusta has a bitter taste that has been likened to burned rubber. No wonder that Peet’s Coffee notes on its website that Robusta has “never been on the menu,” and that Dunkin doesn’t serve it in the U.S. or most international markets. Starbucks says the bean’s “less refined flavor is absolutely the reason we don’t even touch it.”
Airbnb guests griped last year over cleaning fees added after they picked a place but before paying. Still, some hosts say explicitly advertising $0 cleaning fees helps increase bookings. More than two months after the change took effect, some Airbnb hosts told Insider they still saw resentment lingering among travelers. The hosts told Insider it seemed to generate interest in their rentals and even increase bookings during a tough time for some short-term-rental owners. Dan Latu/InsiderMelissa Hughes has never imposed cleaning fees at her goat farm in Tallahassee, Florida.
SINGAPORE—This skyscraper-studded financial and technology hub teems with digitally savvy residents. Some of the most notable tweets, though, are the old fashioned variety, made by an actual bird. Over the past few years, Singapore has earned an unlikely reputation as an answer to what environmentalists call the Asian songbird crisis.
A clash involving Chinese and Indonesian workers at a nickel smelter in Indonesia left two people dead and a part of the facility burned down, showing how tensions have accompanied the expansion of Chinese investment in operations to mine and process the lucrative metal in the Southeast Asian country. The violence—which broke out Saturday at the facility of PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry, a subsidiary of China’s Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry Co.—involved the use of pipes and rocks, a police spokesman said. As the confrontation spiraled, workers set fire to mess halls, dozens of rooms and heavy machinery, said the spokesman, Didik Supranoto .
Indonesia intensified naval and air patrols around the Natuna Islands after it inaugurated a military command base on the cluster’s main island in 2018. Around a remote cluster of islands in the South China Sea, Indonesia is pushing back against Beijing’s expansive claims over the strategic waterway. It announced last week that it had approved plans to develop a large natural-gas field near the Natuna Islands. The field sits within Indonesia’s 200-mile exclusive economic zone, which means that under international law, Jakarta has the right to exploit natural resources there. But China’s claims cover almost all of the South China Sea, extending to the area where the gas field lies, nearly 1,000 miles from the Chinese mainland.
POIPET, Cambodia—As the flames closed in, Ing Bunleng rushed to the closest window carrying a colleague’s 6-year-old daughter in his arms. A fire was tearing through the casino hotel where he was employed as a bar manager. They needed to find a way down from the workers’ dormitory on the third floor. Looking out from the window, Mr. Ing saw a ladder rescuers had put up. The child’s mother, who was working on a higher floor, is still missing.
SummarySummary Companies Q3 core profit beats expectationsPolish core profit returns to growthMakes progress with Mall turnaroundFocuses on cost managementNov 30 (Reuters) - Poland's biggest e-commerce platform Allegro (ALEP.WA) reported a rise in third-quarter core profit on Wednesday, driven by recovery in its home market and smaller losses at Mall, the Czech online retailer it acquired earlier this year. In the company's home market, better delivery cost management and an increase in high-margin ad revenue powered a recovery in core profit. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose 13.9% to 537.3 million zlotys ($119.16 million), beating expectations of 496 million zlotys in a company-compiled consensus. Through this 'fit to grow project' we are looking for ways to make sure we balance the margins with the growth," Eastick said, but declined to give a specific guidance. Allegro said it was making progress with turnaround at Mall business, with core profit loss slowing down to 50 million zlotys compared with 62 million in the second quarter.
