A small shrine of flowers appeared in front of Margaritaville in Key West, Fla., on Saturday. For residents of the southernmost city in the continental United States, Saturday was a day to mourn and toast the singer who died at 76 on Friday and who, with his 1977 anthem “Margaritaville,” made himself and his onetime home famous. Key Westers posted tributes on social media, dropped well-wishes at the Margaritaville restaurant and store — the Buffett businesses that started here and expanded into an empire of hotels, products like Landshark Lager, and more — and started planning a celebration of Mr. Buffett’s life for Sunday, starting at, naturally, 5 p.m. “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” was a chart-topping country duet Mr. Buffett recorded with the singer Alan Jackson in 2003. Megan Burgess, 55, learned of the singer’s death when a friend texted her at 5:35 a.m. She has lived in Key West for 10 years and first visited 20 years ago — because of Mr. Buffett’s music. She fell in love with the island and started returning every year.

Jimmy Buffett performs as part of the 23rd Annual Bridge School Benefit at Shoreline Amphitheatre on October 24, 2009, in Mountain View, California. An amiable singer-songwriter with a penchant for clever wordplay, Buffett largely ignored pop music trends and was never a hitmaker or an MTV darling. Before his death, Buffett was preparing to release a new record, with songs previewed weekly on Radio Margaritaville, according to his website.

Jimmy Buffett built a pop-culture empire on the daydream of “wastin’ away again in Margaritaville”: just hanging out on a tropical beach, drink in hand, a little wistful but utterly relaxed. Buffett leveraged it into a major brand for restaurants, resorts, clothing, food and drink, as well as a perpetual singalong on his robust touring circuit, where his devoted fans — the Parrot Heads — gathered eagerly in their Hawaiian shirts. Buffett cannily marketed his good-timey image; it made him a billionaire. He came up with wry song premises like the one behind “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” which starts as the lament of an attempted vegetarian who can’t resist carnivorous impulses. But Buffett’s songwriting wasn’t all smiley and one-dimensional.

“I’ll always be grateful for his kindness, generosity, and great performances through the years, including at the White House in 2000,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “My thoughts are with his family, friends, and legion of devoted fans.”Major sports franchises and fellow entertainers also recognized the singer’s death on social media. Mr. Leritz recalled that Mr. Buffett said: “I’ve never done this before. Any tips?” He said he advised Mr. Buffett to treat the scene like a normal conversation — deliver the lines and genuinely listen to what the other actor is saying. Eventually Mr. Leritz pieced together whom he had been talking to, and now, he said, it’s a memory he holds dear.

Odds are the world of capital-F fashion never gave a moment’s thought to Jimmy Buffett, the bard of Margaritaville, who died on Friday at 76. Mr. Buffett, a singer, songwriter, entrepreneur and best-selling author, took a form of laid-back dressing instantly recognizable to anyone who ever hung around a boatyard and made it mainstream both at home and abroad. Not for Mr. Buffett the hippie-adjacent suedes and leathers of his musical contemporaries, nor even the standard-issue double-denim get-ups preferred by pop folk idols of his age, people like James Taylor or Jackson Browne. A lifelong waterman, Mr. Buffett spent his early days propping up bars in Key West. Nobody wears uniforms on Key West, unless you think of a uniform as Bermuda shorts in Easter egg colors; low-slung, faded khakis; flip-flops; and short-sleeved shirts with raucous patterns and squared-off tails.

His claim to squandering his wealth notwithstanding, Mr. Buffett proved to be a shrewd manager of his considerable fortune; in 2023, Forbes estimated his net worth at $1 billion. Mr. Buffett was also an accomplished author, one of only six writers, along with the likes of Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck and William Styron, to top both The Times’s fiction and nonfiction best-seller lists. By the time he wrote “Tales from Margaritaville” (1989), the first of his three No. “I could wind up like a lot of my friends did, burned out or dead, or redirect the energy,” he told The Washington Post in 1989. It was fun — all that hard drinking, hard drugging.

Jimmy Buffett’s life evokes images of boozy chill-outs by the beach and a certain carefree calm, but in 1996 the singer’s seaplane came under a hail of gunfire in a dramatic encounter with the Jamaican authorities that inspired a song. Buffett’s song “Jamaica Mistaica” is a laid-back account of a dramatic near-death experience in which his plane, Hemisphere Dancer, was mistaken by the Jamaican authorities for a drug-smuggling aircraft. “We flew the plane in, got off, and as the plane took off to go get fuel, we were surrounded by a Jamaican S.W.A.T. team,” Buffett said in a 1996 Rolling Stone interview. “I thought it was a joke until I heard the gunfire.”

I shudder to compare some of the greatest artists of our generation to a hedge fund, but I can't help but notice some similarities between their disdain for their biggest hits and ExodusPoint's difficult 2022. The hedge fund, which still holds the industry's largest launch in history, ended the year with fewer assets, employees, and PMs than it started with. The world's biggest hedge fund has a new co-CIO. Ken Griffin, the billionaire owner of hedge fund Citadel, is causing quite the stir over his suggestion that a historic home on a property he owns in Miami be relocated. The firm continues to cut back on the size of a venture-capital fund its raising, The Wall Street Journal reports, with a new goal of $5 billion.
FTX's Bahamian entity spent nearly $40 million on hotels, food, and travel in just nine months. They show the company spent almost $6 million at a single hotel and $1 million on one caterer. Lawyers pointed out that the crypto exchange's Bahamian company, FTX Digital Markets, generated no customer revenue, but spent lavishly. From January to September 2022, the company spent $15.4 million on luxury hotels and accommodation, the filings say. Almost half of that was spent on catering services, with the largest amount, $1.4 million, spent on catering at the Hyatt.

Staff at the 4-star hotel told Bloomberg that employees of FTX entities stayed there for several months this year, and were generally friendly. Employees told Bloomberg that the company had around 20 suites in One Particular Harbour – a high-end building designed for longer stays, next to the main resort. Insider's Bianca Chan explored this trend with a piece on how cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud are reimagining themselves as business consultants. Many of the biggest cloud providers have stood up teams focused on interfacing with the C-suite to advise them on how a move to the cloud can be an opportunity to overhaul things. It's not hard to see how this could end up being big business for the cloud providers. Cloud providers still have a long way to go to be a real threat to consultants, but there is potential there. The Margaritaville beach resort in The Bahamas is seeking $55,319 from Alameda Research. The hotel chain was founded by singer Jimmy Buffett after the success of his song of the same name. Buffett's hotel and restaurant chain is named after his 1977 hit song of the same name, which celebrated the tropical lifestyle. Eight years after its release, he founded a restaurant chain which later expanded to include hotels, and even a $1 billion retirement community in Florida. The resort also provides a service for large meetings and corporate events, and a docking service for yachts.
A filing on Monday shows that Alameda Research owes $55,319 to Margaritaville's Bahamas resort. Alameda Research, Sam Bankman-Fried's trading firm, filed for bankruptcy in November alongside FTX. That's not great news for the Margaritaville Beach Resort in Nassau, Bahamas, to which Bankman-Fried's bankrupt trading firm, Alameda Research, owes more than $50,000. Unlike secured creditors, unsecured creditors do not have access to collateral that they can seize when the money they are owed goes unpaid. Alameda Research and Margaritaville have not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
