Allegations of the sexual abuse of Palestinian prisoners by members of the Israeli military are “horrific,” the United States has said, after a graphic video broadcast on Israeli news added fuel to mounting criticism of the U.S. ally’s conduct in the war in Gaza. “We have seen the video, and reports of sexual abuse of detainees are horrific,” Miller said, adding that the reports should be “fully” investigated by the Israeli government. “There ought to be zero tolerance for sexual abuse, rape of any detainee, period,” he added. “No circumstances, however exceptional, can ever justify torture or ill-treatment.”Israeli soldiers load naked Palestinian prisoners onto a bus in a photo sent to NBC News by Mustafa Barghouti, Palestinian Legislative Council member. In their winning bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, Los Angeles leaders pledged that the city’s version of the Games would be the greenest ever — a goal they planned to achieve in large part by making access to the event “car-free.”It was a bold statement because, well, it’s Los Angeles. Could America’s capital of car culture, where traffic shapes daily life more than the weather, really pull that off? Now that the Paris Olympics have ended, the clock is ticking. Los Angeles must complete much-needed upgrades to the region’s transit system to handle an influx of athletes and visitors without bringing car traffic to a standstill. “I’m optimistic,” said Eli Lipmen, the executive director of Move L.A., an organization that advocates for the expansion of public transit in the region.

Green Party nominee Jill Stein has been recruiting Palestinian Americans to be her vice presidential running mate as the left-wing presidential candidate looks to exploit the community’s frustrations with Democrats' support for Israel during its war in Gaza. But President Joe Biden’s steadfast support for Israel turned off many Arab and Muslim voters, who comprise sizable portions of several battleground states, especially Michigan. CNN —White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford has retired after nearly three decades cooking for five commanders-in-chief and their families, a White House official tells CNN. Comerford cooked for America’s first families over 29 years, including the Clintons, Bushes, Obamas, Trumps and Bidens, overseeing all White House cuisine from family meals to state dinners in the executive chef role. Her last day was Friday, the White House official said. “To be a White House chef, it’s really your temperance that really counts for a lot. In 2005, she was one of about 450 applicants for the executive chef role, which included what she described as a final “cook-off” round.

Sven Hoppe/picture alliance/Getty ImagesThe women’s and men’s Olympic triathlons will go ahead on Wednesday in the French capital, Paris 2024 organizers and World Triathlon announced. Poor water quality levels in the River Seine had led to the cancellation of numerous training swims and forced the postponement of the men’s triathlon, which was scheduled for Tuesday. About $1.5 billion (1.4 billion Euros) was spent trying to clean up the river ahead of the Games. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the river earlier this month to display her confidence in the river’s water quality.

Just after 10 p.m. on Saturday night, on the first weekend of the Paris Olympics, Jill Biden walked through the wood doors of Ralph’s Restaurant Paris, past a towering display of red, white and blue flowers, and picked up two glasses of champagne from a silver tray. Ralph Lauren, the brand that owns the restaurant in the city’s Sixth Arrondissement and is a longtime outfitter of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams, hosted the party to celebrate the U.S. team. The bash — along with the Games — was a chance for the brand to show off its Olympic collections. The marketing potential of the Olympics is “as if you have three Super Bowls a day for 17 days,” said David Lauren, the brand’s chief innovation and branding officer.

And Monday, he leaned into a cheerleader role as he introduced the vice president at her Wilmington, Delaware, campaign headquarters. Gavin Newsom appeared this week wearing work gloves and Ray-Ban sunglasses as he hauled a garbage bag from under a freeway overpass in California. His message was obvious: He wanted state and local officials to clear out homeless encampments, just as he was doing, and he had signed an executive order to spur them into action. “There are no longer any excuses,” Mr. Newsom said in a video statement that was released Thursday and filmed at an encampment where everything from a box fan to a plastic kiddie pool had been stashed. Hours later, the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, responded with her own set of visuals from a different encampment cleanup in the nation’s second-largest city. But in California, where Democrats dominate the state government and run its largest cities, the matter has become an intraparty dispute, especially after a Supreme Court decision last month gave local officials greater authority to crack down on encampments.

CNN —First lady Jill Biden watched on Wednesday night as President Joe Biden told the American people it was time to “pass the torch” on his political career. Then she got on a plane, flying nearly 4,000 miles to Paris, where another torch was being passed. Jill Biden is arriving in Paris at a monumental time for her husband’s presidency. That unity will be on display at the Olympic Games, a rare moment in intensely polarized times. In one tangible signal of how plans for the Paris trip changed since the president’s decision to drop his reelection bid, Jill Biden had been scheduled to headline a fundraiser for Americans living abroad in Paris.

US small caps hadn't been down that long since the painful stretch from mid-2007 to early 2011. While smaller stocks languished, large-cap companies dominated, due in part to enthusiasm about their exposure to artificial intelligence. Bank of AmericaThis valuation discrepancy is no secret, so Bank of America believes the market rally will broaden beyond the mega-cap leaders as investors shift toward smaller stocks. Earnings expectations for small caps have tumbled in the last several months, Hall said, noting that analysts are no longer pricing in positive profit growth.
