Combs helps Warren Buffett manage Berkshire Hathaway's vast portfolio of stocks and other investments, and serves as CEO of Berkshire-owned Geico. He compared digging into a company to detective work, and underlined the value of having a short seller's eye when analyzing businesses. (Exploring different fields and taking risks is a great way to make your mistakes early and find your passion, Combs said.) If your dream is to make it to manager and you're perfectly fine there, that's pretty much where you're going to stop. Oct 11 (Reuters) - Canadian toys and games-maker Spin Master (TOY.TO) said on Wednesday that it has agreed to buy U.S.-based toy-maker Melissa & Doug for $950 million in cash, taking the shares of the Rubik's Cube owner up nearly 8% in early trade. The move comes days after Spin Master signed a deal with the retailing and licensing division of Paramount Global (PARA.O) for a new animated series in the well-known Dora the Explorer franchise. Spin Master said it expects the Melissa deal, which includes $500 million in debt financing, to be immediately accretive to its earnings per share. Melissa & Doug makes toys for children in the preschool ages, and is known for its wooden jigsaw puzzles. Spin Master, which also owns the popular children's cartoon adventure series PAW Patrol, has a market capitalization of C$3.50 billion ($2.57 billion) as of stock's last close.

The performances of all four films – “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X,” “The Creator” and “Dumb Money” – told a familiar story at the box office. “PAW Patrol,” from Paramount Pictures and Spin Master, had timing on its side. A third “PAW Patrol” movie has already been green-lit. Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money,” expanded nationwide after two weeks of limited release but failed to ignite the kind of populist movement it irreverently dramatizes. Made for $30 million, “Dumb Money” wasn’t a massive bet.

CNN —Archaeologists in Israel have discovered what they believe to be the remains of an Ancient Greek courtesan. Stiebel told CNN that he and his team believe the woman would have been among the first Greeks to arrive in the region. Liat Oz, the director of the excavation on behalf of the IAA, described the mirror found in the tomb alongside the remains. Researchers say the mirror is incredibly rare, with just 63 discovered in the Hellenistic world. Stiebel told CNN that the team are continuing with further research in order to “zoom in” on the finer details of the mirror.

Brands have to change their NFL advertising expectations on streamers like YouTube and Amazon. That's no longer the case, as platforms like YouTube and Amazon influence how some NFL ads are bought and evaluated. Here are three ways YouTube and Amazon are changing how brands advertise against the NFL. By the end of Monday, another piece could be put in place in the complicated jigsaw puzzle of the four criminal cases facing former President Donald J. Trump: A date could be chosen for Mr. Trump’s federal trial on charges of seeking to overturn the 2020 election. At a hearing scheduled for Monday morning in Federal District Court in Washington, Judge Tanya S. Chutkan is set to consider — and may select — the date of the trial. As Judge Chutkan considers the arguments, another legal proceeding related to Mr. Trump will be playing out on Monday in federal court in Atlanta, underscoring the complexity of bringing the charges against him to trial. Fani T. Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County, Ga., recently proposed starting a trial in her case against Mr. Trump, on charges of tampering with the 2020 election in that state, in March. But that date remains somewhat uncertain not only because of the jockeying among prosecutors over the timing of the different cases, but also because some of Mr. Trump’s 18 co-defendants in the case have asked for the trial to start as early as this fall while others want to slow things down.

In 2021, geologists animated a video that shows how Earth's tectonic plates moved over the last billion years. But in 2021 a group of geologists offered up an easily digestible peek at 1 billion years of plate tectonic motion. Building a better model of Earth's platesThe Earth's plates move in a variety of ways and can cause earthquakes, mountains, and canyons. The top layer — between 5 and 50 miles thick — is the crust, which is fragmented into tectonic plates that fit together. The jigsaw puzzle of Earth's continents hasn't stopped shifting, of course.

A cellphone allows travelers to have a camera always at the ready. Here are a few tips on when and what to shoot, and how to better frame what we see when we travel. On most cellphones, you can set up a three-by-three grid for the screen in the camera settings. Test different compositions by turning your cellphone both vertically and horizontally, and, if you have a choice of lenses, decide if the scene is best framed tightly or wide. Another way to enrich the landscape is to spot a person or an object and place them carefully in the frame as a focal point.

Fritz says climate protests 'annoying' after match suspended

Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY SportsAug 5 (Reuters) - World number nine Taylor Fritz said climate activists need to find a better way of protesting instead of "annoying" sports fans by interrupting events, after his Washington Open match against Andy Murray was briefly halted on Friday. "I get they're protesting, but there's just got to be a better way to do it," Fritz told reporters. I jokingly said, 'Honestly, this makes me want to go fly on jets more'," Fritz said with a smile. "I think they're supporting a good cause, but the way they're doing it... Who's going to want to listen when they're just annoying everybody?" Fritz returned in the evening to seal a 6-3 6-3 victory over Jordan Thompson to storm into the semi-finals, where he takes on Tallon Griekspoor.

Those three signings were all completed early in the close4 season meaning Arsenal should be ready to hit the ground running when they kick off at home to Nottingham Forest next Saturday. The house in Devon similarly balances crisp forms, simple materials and the occasional more luxurious touch. Their interest piqued, Pinch and Bannon went to see the place, only to be told an offer had already been accepted. But several days later they received a phone call: the farmer felt hopeful the couple would respect his vision and invited them to make a competing offer. One side would incorporate the old barn — thought to date to around 1600 and the erstwhile home of the ice cream factory — and would accommodate two bedrooms. But we like the patina and big knots, which give it such character.”

Just Stop Oil protesters disrupt match at Wimbledon

CNN —Just Stop Oil activists disrupted two matches at Wimbledon on Wednesday after running onto Court 18 and sprinkling orange confetti and jigsaw puzzle pieces on the playing surface. In the first incident, security was able to quickly usher one activist away while another, wearing a Just Stop Oil T-shirt, sat crossed legged on the court before finally being taken off. “Following an incident on Court 18, two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass and criminal damage and these individuals have now been removed from the Grounds,” Wimbledon tweeted after the incident. Ground staff removed pieces of confetti from Court 18 before play got back underway. In a statement after the first protest, Just Stop Oil said the two activists at Wimbledon were “demanding that the UK government halts all new licences and consents for oil, gas and coal.”In a statement published by Just Stop Oil, one of the protesters said: “Forget strawberries and cream, scientists are warning of impending food shortages, mass displacement and war.

Global markets in H1: Banks vs the machines

Linking it all has been the relentless rise in interest rates, which was exactly what battered markets in 2022. The key to his persona, I think, can be found in the joke he tells about the always-be-selling vanity of his generation, presenting himself as its avatar. “I don’t know how to do my taxes, but I do know how to be a badass.” Then he clarifies, “A shell of a badass.”That’s the role Early plays here. “If we’re honest,” he says, “Donald Trump is not a sensual person.” It’s the way he says “If we’re honest” that cracks me up. Darfur was loosely and sometimes imprecisely divided between Black and Arab communities, many of whom had deeper ties with the Sahelian peoples of Chad and Niger. These ill-fitting parts have formed a kind of booby trap, plunging Sudan into cycles of violent strife. The region seceded by referendum in 2011, becoming the Republic of South Sudan, generally considered the most recent widely recognized nation on Earth. Ultimately Sudan’s president, al-Bashir, would be charged with war crimes by the International Criminal Court for his role in the slaughter. Now, the two generals who overthrew al-Bashir have turned their guns on each other, with the Sudanese people caught between them.
