Italian bank UniCredit on Wednesday posted better-than-expected second quarter profit and said it was buying a Belgian digital bank with its own cloud-based IT platform for 370 million euros ($401 million). UniCredit said the purchase of Belgian bank Aion and its cloud-based core banking system Vodeno would add a team of 200 engineers, developers and data scientists. To address this, UniCredit's rival Intesa Sanpaolo for example is partnering with British cloud banking technology provider ThoughtMachine. "The transaction represents one of the first moves by a bank to acquire full ownership of a new technology (without any dependencies from third party core banking providers)," UniCredit said. Net profit in the second quarter rose 5% from the previous three months to 2.7 billion euros, surpassing a 2.4 billion euro average forecast from analysts polled by the bank as revenues held up better than anticipated.

At the Summer Olympics, the USA team will also feature numerous Black athletes, including gymnast Simone Biles, sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and the (current) fastest man on earth, Noah Lyles. As you watch the Olympics this summer, take note of the sports in which Black people represent the USA and European countries. So no, Black athletes are not naturally better at some sports — they take the narrower opportunities open to them and work incredibly hard on their self-belief to make it to that podium.

LONDON — European stocks were set to fall at the open on Monday as markets reacted to an expected hung parliament in France after a surprise win for a left-wing coalition of parties. France's CAC 40 was seen falling 37.9 points to 7,631, according to IG, and the euro was down 0.18% against the dollar. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index and Germany's DAX are both expected to fall around 6 points, while Italy's FTSE MIB is expected to slip 115 points at the open. CNN —Norwegian cyclist André Drege has died aged 25 following a crash at the Tour of Austria, his team Coop-Repsol announced on Saturday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with André’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the team posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Cyclists (L-R) Italy's Samuele Zoccarato, Austria's Michael Gogl, Norway's André Drege, the Netherlands' Oscar Riesebeek and Germany's Jonas Rapp ride in a partly snow-covered mountain area on Saturday. After news of his death broke, the cycling world paid tribute to Drege with several teams offering their condolences. Drege’s death comes just over a year after another professional cyclist in his 20s – Gino Mäder – died in a crash during a stage of the Tour de Suisse.
