Ukraine said Monday that it shot down more than two dozen drones above Kyiv overnight, as Russia intensifies strikes that seek to degrade its rival’s air defenses ahead of an expected offensive by Kyiv. The strikes come after a recent spate of attacks on Russian soil culminating in a drone attack on the Kremlin last week that Moscow blamed on Kyiv.
The leader of Russian paramilitary group Wagner threatened to withdraw his troops from the front line in Ukraine, citing growing losses, in a move that raises fresh tensions between Moscow’s military leaders ahead of an expected offensive by Kyiv’s forces. Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said his forces would leave their positions in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut on May 10 after delivering an expletive-riddled broadside against Moscow’s military leadership, which he accused of withholding ammunition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said further steps were being taken to shield the country’s skies after Russia killed scores of people in two deadly missile barrages, seeking to weaken Ukraine ahead of a planned offensive to retake territories occupied by Moscow. More than two dozen people have been killed in two Russian missile barrages across Ukraine over the past week. Ukrainian air defenses shot down all but five of the 41 missiles in the course of the two attacks.
A drone struck an oil depot in the port city of Sevastopol in Crimea, according to Russian-installed officials in the region. Kyiv didn’t immediately comment on the alleged drone attack. Photo: ReutersUkraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to hold Russia accountable after a barrage of cruise missiles killed more than two dozen people last week, as battles rage in the east of the country ahead of an anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive. The missiles unleashed by Russia on Friday struck several regions including an apartment building in the central city of Uman, where at least 23 people were killed, including several children.
Heavy fighting continued on Wednesday in the western districts of Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city where the country’s defenders have been putting up stiff, costly resistance against Russia’s invasion forces for many months. The head of Ukraine’s special operations forces, Brig. Gen. Viktor Khorenko, described the situation in the city as “difficult” during a visit to Bakhmut, but said Ukrainian troops were continuing to exact a heavy price for Russian advances.

Heavy fighting continued on Wednesday in the western districts of Bakhmut, the Ukrainian city where the country’s defenders have been putting up stiff, costly resistance against Russia’s invasion forces for months. The head of Ukraine’s special operations forces, Brig. Gen. Viktor Khorenko, said during a visit to Bakhmut that the situation there was difficult but that Ukrainian troops were continuing to exact a heavy price for Russian advances.
Ukraine said it had shot down a slew of drones overnight as the country’s Western backers prepared to meet to discuss military supplies and NATO’s head made his first trip to Kyiv. The latest drone barrage comes as Russia seeks to erode Ukraine’s air defenses ahead of a planned offensive by Kyiv expected in the coming weeks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky , both visited troops in Ukraine within a day of each other this week as the leaders try to shore up morale ahead of an expected offensive by Kyiv to wrest territory from Moscow’s grip. Mr. Putin made a rare visit to his troops by traveling Monday to Ukraine’s Kherson and Luhansk regions, both of which are partly occupied by Russian forces, and was briefed by senior officers about the situation on the front line, the Kremlin said Tuesday.

Explosions were heard in the Russian-occupied city of Melitopol overnight as Kyiv and its Western allies prepare for an offensive expected to begin in earnest later this spring. The city’s exiled Mayor Ivan Fedorov said a Russian base near an airfield was struck. Russian-installed occupation authorities in Melitopol said air defenses shot down six missiles fired by U.S.-supplied M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System or Himars. Western military analysts have said that Himars rockets probably can’t be intercepted by Russian systems.

Medics evacuate a wounded Ukrainian soldier near the front line of Bakhmut, Ukraine, the center of some of the heaviest fighting in the war. Kyiv, Ukraine—Russian forces shelled a town near the eastern city of Bakhmut on Sunday, killing six people, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia’s presidency of the United Nations Security Council was undermining the body’s credibility. Pavlo Kyrylenko, the head of the regional administration in the eastern Donetsk region, said Russian forces had struck the center of Konstantynivka, damaging high-rise and residential buildings.
