A winter storm in the United States mirrors the path and hazards of a massive storm that slammed much of the country the previous week. The storm, which smacked the central and eastern US Friday, continued Saturday with heavy rain, snow and dangerous coastal flooding in New England; blizzard conditions in the Midwest; and snow in the Great Lakes, including the Buffalo area. Some areas of the South are still trying to recover from the last storm, which generated 25 tornado reports across Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. In the central part of the country, the storm unleashed perilous blizzard conditions, shutting down several highways and stranding drivers in frigid temperatures.

We related to the mother-daughter dynamic of wanting to murder each other one moment, and cuddling in bed giggling the next. Since we knew the neighborhood Aurora lived in, the affluent River Oaks, we felt a kinship with the characters, as if they existed within our universe. Mostly, we bonded over the film’s message that levity and sorrow can, and should, coexist. The theme is just part of the fabric of the movie, like Aurora’s petal pink décor or Emma’s messiness. At the time, Brooks said the adaptation of the novel ended up being the toughest thing he had ever written.

A government shutdown won’t be disrupting travel plans this Thanksgiving after Congress agreed on Wednesday to a funding package that lasts through early next year. But clouds and crowds might make your trip a slog anyway. The Transportation Security Administration expects about 30 million passengers to fly between this Friday and the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, an 11.5 percent increase over the same period last year. The weather won’t make the Thanksgiving crush any easier. Weekend storms in New England and low clouds and rain on the California coast could cause some delays.

In its 2023-24 winter outlook, the regulatory authority warned that prolonged, wide-area cold snaps threaten the reliability of bulk power generation and availability of fuel supplies for natural gas-fired generation. "Recent extreme cold weather events have shown that energy delivery disruptions can have devastating consequences for electric and gas consumers in impacted areas," NERC said. It put the U.S. Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and South, along with some Canadian provinces, at the highest risk for electricity supply shortages this winter. NERC also found that load forecasting in winter is growing in complexity, and underestimating demand is a risk to reliability in extreme cold temperatures. Flows of gas into pipelines were reduced during Elliott, while demand for the fuel for heating and power generation increased, dramatically lowering line pressures.

The Minnesota Vikings and the Las Vegas Raiders are proof that major midseason upheaval doesn't necessarily mean it's time to start aiming for the draft instead of the playoffs. I know what it was like to learn this in three weeks and have to get on the field," Risner said. “I know a lot of nicknames per se, but name names, that’s for this week, that’s the assignment for this week," he said. The Raiders became the first team since 2009 to score fewer than 20 points on offense in each of the first eight games of the season. “So if that’s the case," Gronkowski said, "I think Josh McDaniels comes back as offensive coordinator in New England, that’s for sure.”There'd be no Brady waiting for him this time.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — When the Las Vegas Raiders hired Josh McDaniels in January 2022, he said he had learned from his first stint as an NFL head coach. The Raiders under McDaniels went 6-11 in 2022 and are 3-5 so far this season for a .360 winning percentage. The one game Las Vegas reached that figure came because of a fourth-quarter safety in a 21-17 victory over the Patriots on Oct. 15. The Raiders lost a record-tying five games after taking double-digit leads, including blowing a 20-0 halftime lead in his home debut against Arizona for the biggest collapse in franchise history. McDaniels finished his tenure with the third-worst record of any Raiders coach with at least 25 games.

Last winter, residential retail natural gas prices exceeded those of the previous 10 winters, the EIA said. And in the Northeast, which historically has had higher natural gas bills, the average household with natural gas heating is expected to pay $761, in contrast to $924 last winter. The Wall Street Journal notes spending on heating oil could increase inflation in the Northeast and take a toll on low-income residents.

The arrival of warblers, vireos and other colorful birds last week has excited Britain’s twitching community — enthusiastic bird-watchers who will travel long distances to view new or unusual species. A sighting of a Canada warbler was the first recorded in Britain and similarly, a Blackburnian warbler was spotted in Ireland for the first time. Experts said twitchers should act fast if they want to see the North American arrivals, as the phenomenon will last just a few days longer. A coalition of 25 state governors announced a major push to reach 20 million deployed heat pumps by 2030, they said in New York City on Thursday. Heat pumps are energy efficient replacements for fossil fuel powered furnaces and air conditioners. Heat pumps can also save consumers money -- around $300 a year in the United States, according to the IEA. In places like Europe, where gas prices are higher, having a heat pump can save customers around $900 a year, the IEA says. Maine, for example, has been remarkably successful in installing heat pumps with its own legislative action.

BOSTON (AP) — When it comes to hurricanes, New England can't compete with Florida or the Caribbean. Lee remained a Category 1 hurricane late Friday night with sustained winds of 80 mph (128 kph). One recent study found climate change could result in hurricanes expanding their reach more often into mid-latitude regions, which include New York, Boston and even Beijing. While hurricanes and tropical storms are uncommon in New England, the region has been seen its share of violent weather events. The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 brought gusts as high as 186 mph (300 kph) and sustained winds of 121 mph (195 kph) at Massachusetts’ Blue Hill Observatory.

Lee, which was downgraded from a hurricane to a post-tropical cyclone early Saturday, brought gusty winds, rain and dangerous surf conditions to coastal communities in New England early Saturday, as the center of the much-anticipated storm approached landfall near the U.S.-Canadian border. As Lee inched closer on Friday, Maine opened emergency shelters, residents in New England were urged to secure their boats ashore and Nova Scotia urged preparations for power outages and floods. Early Saturday, tropical-storm-force winds, which forecasters warned could down trees and knock out power, were occurring in Massachusetts and Nova Scotia, the National Hurricane Center said. “Winds continue to be the biggest concern with Lee,” said the National Weather Service office in Portland, Maine, early Saturday. For more than a week, residents in eastern Canada and along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States have kept a wary eye on the slow-moving storm, which startled scientists earlier with how rapidly it had intensified and at one point led many people to worry that it could slam into the U.S. coast with devastating consequences.

The ultimate outcome for locations in New England will depend on how a few different conditions play out over the next two days. Though the storm is expected to weaken, the Hurricane Center said it would remain “a large and dangerous cyclone” as it approaches New England and Atlantic Canada. A hurricane watch, meaning hurricane conditions are possible within the area, stretched through down-east Maine from Stonington to the U.S.-Canada border. The Canadian Hurricane Center also issued a hurricane watch on Wednesday for part of the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The center said that its hurricane and tropical storm watches referred to conditions expected on Saturday.

As Hurricane Lee churned closer to coastal New England on Friday, with winds expected to intensify by nightfall, cruise ships sought refuge in Portland, Maine, and homeowners in Provincetown, Mass., piled sandbags. An arborist in Halifax, Nova Scotia, fielded dozens of calls from residents expecting tree damage. Yet, like others in a region accustomed to powerful nor’easters, if not hurricanes, Mr. Crobar was not particularly fazed by what was coming. “We like to sensationalize the weather, but it’s just a natural part of the earth,” he said. The storm was expected to make landfall in the Canadian province of New Brunswick late on Saturday, but forecasters said its sprawling size meant that severe effects would be felt in New England, too.

But scientists said Friday that the arrival of storms like Hurricane Lee this weekend could become more common in the region as the planet warms, including in places such as the Gulf of Maine. One recent study found climate change could result in hurricanes expanding their reach more often into mid-latitude regions, which includes New York, Boston and even Beijing. Lee remained a hurricane with 80 mph (128 kph) winds at 2 p.m. EDT Friday as it headed toward New England and eastern Canada with 20-foot (6-meter) ocean swells, strong winds and rain. While hurricanes and tropical storms are uncommon in New England, the region has been seen its share of violent weather events.
