CNN —Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday pushed back on criticism of President Joe Biden’s new executive action restricting asylum while calling on Congress to take action on the border. Still, Mayorkas insisted the restrictions on asylum would reduce the number of people who try to cross the border. “The bipartisan deal was rejected once, we pressed forward again. And it requires the cooperation of other countries which we have secured.”But Mayorkas again called on Congress to do more. “Former President Trump tried to implement a Muslim ban, a ban on entry to this country explicitly based on one religion.

Republicans defended Mr. Trump against what they insisted was an unfair trial in New York. Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat and co-chairman of Mr. Biden’s re-election campaign, opposed asylum restrictions when Mr. Trump enacted them. “Former President Trump actually wants a problem to solve through his election rather than a solution that a bipartisan group of senators stood behind,” he said. President Trump is simply making a political issue of this.”Whitmer said contraception was “very much at risk” under Republicans. The Biden administration is considering a proposal to protect undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation and allow them to work in the country legally, according to four officials with knowledge of the discussions. Any such program could also provide some spouses an easier route to obtain U.S. citizenship. The proposal comes as President Biden has moved to address political liabilities in his immigration policy in recent days. Last week, he moved to bar asylum for migrants crossing into the United States as part of an effort to toughen border enforcement, eliciting criticism from members of his own party. And now, a move to protect undocumented immigrants in the United States could help Mr. Biden address some of the fierce resistance that order elicited and shore up support among immigrant advocates, Latino voters and his progressive base.

Europe’s center ground is shifting further to the right

And while the far right is on course to make large gains, the center parties remain ahead. For those on the center right, domestic political shifts to the hard right could make working with the hard right increasingly attractive at a European level. The deadline for this is months away, which leaves a lot of time for horse-trading, which could see elements of the center right and hard right cooperate. It’s not implausible that the center right could vote with the left on issues like support for Ukraine, but then work with the hard right on immigration and climate policy. That was the result of years of domestic politics shifting in the UK, the center right shifting to fend off the hard right, ultimately leading to that rupture.

At a time when Americans and the Federal Reserve are clamoring for clear-cut data about the state and trajectory of the economy, Friday’s jobs report was much more opaque than everyone had hoped. Employment fell in the household survey, while unemployment increased to just shy of 6.5 million and pushing the unemployment rate to the threshold of 4%. Service-providing industries accounted for the bulk of the month’s job gains, with health care and social assistance continuing to lead the way, with 83,500 jobs added. “Don’t get overly spooked by the rise in the unemployment rate,” Bunker wrote. “The labor market is still gliding toward a soft landing.”

The flurry of events signals a new phase of the campaign for Trump with his New York case now largely behind him. No longer tethered to a Manhattan courtroom during the week, Trump is expected to ramp up his activity as he pivots from the trial to the trail. But as he steps back onto the campaign trail as a convicted felon, the urgency for Trump has crystalized. Trump himself has also threatened his political opponents, continuing the retaliatory rhetoric that has permeated from his campaign since the onset. “They know Joe Biden can’t beat him in a fair fight, so they’ve disgracefully weaponized the justice system.”The Trump campaign, though, is not concerned Trump will muddy the message on immigration by focusing on his legal battles.

Middle-class Americans are falling behind
  + stars: | 2024-06-06 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Middle-class income growth has lagged behind that of the upper class since 1970, according to a Pew Research Center report published May 31. There are signs that middle-class Americans are dialing back their spending. Fast food joints, a mainstay dining destination for middle-income consumers, are leaning into discounts to placate frustrated diners. Kohl’s that same month reported weak first-quarter results, underlining how middle-income consumers are pulling back spending on non-essential clothing and discretionary merchandise at department stores. Economic growth has been anemic in recent years, squeezing living standards and starving public services of funds.

Biden Tries to Close a Loophole
  + stars: | 2024-06-05 | by ( David Leonhardt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden’s latest executive actions on immigration are an attempt to shrink a loophole that has allowed many people to enter the country without legal permission. That loophole is the asylum system. Not as intendedThe modern idea of asylum stems from World War II. Today, many migrants claim asylum even though they are not at risk of being persecuted. They instead want to move to the U.S. — understandably enough — because it is a richer, politically freer and less violent place than much of the world.

On Tuesday, President Biden issued a proclamation that gives the Department of Homeland Security the authority to temporarily block migrants from seeking asylum between ports of entry at the United States-Mexico border. The president’s decree echoes a 2018 Trump-era policy that invoked the same powers to deny protections to people seeking asylum between ports of entry. Mr. Biden may think that shutting the border to asylum seekers will improve his standing with voters. Rather than reduce unauthorized migration, his policy will likely push people to cross at more dangerous areas along the border. Though there’s little to be done now about this recycled immigration policy, Mr. Biden has a moral obligation to use his legal authority to protect the communities he promised to defend four years ago while on the campaign trail.

“Independent Treasury officials have costed Labour’s policies and they amount to a £2,000 tax rise for every working family,” Sunak said. The Conservative Party leader later repeated the claim. But Bowler’s letter could undermine Sunak’s claim to lead with integrity — a pledge made when he became prime minister in October 2022 — as he battles a high-stakes election. In a statement Wednesday, Labour said Sunak had “lied eleven times to the British people” about the party’s tax plans. During the debate Tuesday, Starmer dismissed the £2,000 ($2,560) figure as “nonsense” and said it was based on “pretend” Labour policies.

CNN —With an election looming, President Biden’s new executive action on the border aims to send a loud and clear message about his approach to immigration. The president’s proclamation, announced Tuesday, still allows for the normal flow of commerce and legal immigration across the border. But it bars migrants who cross the border illegally from seeking asylum once a daily threshold is met. Border authorities encountered around 3,500 migrants crossing the border unlawfully on Monday, according to a Homeland Security official, above the threshold needed for the executive action to take effect. And immigrant rights advocates warn that closing the border to asylum seekers will endanger vulnerable people and ultimately make the border less safe.

But much more must be done and, as with most change, it’s important to start by admitting there’s a problem. The phenomenon of Democrats dismissing the polls in favor of misplaced optimism has been termed “hopium” by data journalist Nate Silver. Polling denial is not unanimous in the party, as many Democrats are reportedly in a full-blown “freakout” over Biden’s chances. It’s essential they admit the polling is correct, because if Biden is winning, there is little need to change course. This means these groups likely share top concerns with moderate voters generally.

Many of the tens of thousands of migrants who have arrived in New York City over the last several years say they share the same hope: to be granted asylum so they can legally stay in the United States permanently. But while New York is a beacon for many migrants, with a law guaranteeing shelter and pro-immigration political traditions, its asylum office is also the toughest place to win a claim in the country, records show. Even before the recent influx of border crossers, New York’s federal asylum office granted the lowest share of asylum claims among the nearly dozen such offices around the country, according to a 2022 analysis by the nonprofit Human Rights First. In 2020, when 28 percent of asylum claims were granted nationally, 5 percent of decisions in New York were approvals. The asylum process was never meant to be a catchall program to allow most people arriving in the United States to remain.

Migrants who want protection in the United States are now facing another hurdle, even after President Biden announced a near-total ban on asylum. Starting on Wednesday, migrants who cross into the United States illegally have four hours to find a lawyer if they want to argue that they should be an exception to the sweeping restrictions on asylum that Mr. Biden announced on Tuesday. If they cannot find a lawyer, they have to make a credible case on their own or be turned back immediately. Migrants previously had at least 24 hours or more to find a lawyer. President Biden’s decision this week to seal the border temporarily to most asylum seekers was a striking policy shift. It sharply divided his party, invited comparisons to policies backed by former President Donald Trump and made him the owner of the most restrictive immigration measure ever to be carried out by a modern Democratic president. It also aligned him with a broad swath of the public on a key issue in an election year. In doing so, they hope to neutralize an issue that the former president has made a major focus of his campaign. “It’s part of the overall effort to not just neutralize but to show the Republicans for their hypocrisy.”

Please refresh the page if you do not see a player above at that time.] President Joe Biden is set to deliver remarks at the White House on Tuesday about his newly signed executive order tightening asylum restrictions at the U.S.-Mexico border. The executive order will temporarily ban undocumented immigrants from obtaining asylum when migrant crossings exceed a certain threshold — a daily average of 2,500 over seven consecutive days. Given current levels of migrant crossings, which Department of Homeland Security officials estimate at 4,000 per day, the action is expected to take effect immediately. The executive order could also have economic impacts by tightening the labor market's growth and potentially unclogging U.S.-Mexico supply chains.
