CNN —Argentina’s labor unions began a nationwide general strike on Wednesday against austerity measures and reforms by the country’s libertarian President Javier Milei. Thousands of people marched toward Congress in the capital of Buenos Aires on Wednesday amid the strike, which began at 10 a.m. “This is not the Argentina that I want for my grandchildren or for the future of Argentina. The strike has led to transport disruptions with flag carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas saying that it canceled all its operations on Wednesday. Vitaliy Kryukov, a loitering-munition commander for Ukraine's elite Adam Tactical Group, told Business Insider that fighting with drones in the winter comes with far more limitations. He compared it to what happens to cell phones in winter: "In the winter, you take your smartphone outside, and you'll notice that soon enough the battery will deplete much, much quicker." Upgrading drones to make them able to see at night, or simply using better-equipped drones, can be much more expensive. These drones are not the type that slam into targets and explode on impact, and there are fewer of them. AdvertisementHe said neither Russia or Ukraine is stopping their fight despite the conditions: "For sure Ukraine won't stop for the winter."

The agreement announced on Tuesday follows a pledge by 118 countries at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade as they seek to wean themselves off fossil fuels. "Reaching this goal will require immediate action from these governments and the private sector," said Iberdrola Executive Chairman Ignacio Galan. Argentina's main political force for decades, the ruling Peronists only months ago looked down and out. It has a new front-man, Sergio Massa, who is in a tight race to win Sunday's presidential election run-off with anti-establishment outsider Javier Milei. "If Massa wins, he will build a different leadership. PERONISM: LEFT OR RIGHT? "If Massa wins, he will have to betray CFK (Kirchner): in Peronism there is no room for two commanders," said political analyst Andres Malamud.

Argentines were going to the polls Sunday, as frustrated voters weigh handing the presidency to an anti-establishment, right-wing populist who has shaken up the political system and pledges to drastically overhaul the state. "Argentina is in for a wild ride," Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America program at the Washington-based Wilson Center, said. Whatever the results, Milei has already inserted himself and his libertarian party into a political structure dominated by a center-left and a center-right coalition for almost two decades. Argentines were also buying dollars and removing hard currency deposits from banks as the peso accelerated its already steady depreciation. That message resonated among many Argentines who watched their economic prospects wither under successive administrations in which both Massa and Bullrich served.

“For Milei, this should be a shock,” said Ignacio Labaqui, an Argentine political analyst. Mr. Milei received nearly the same percentage of the vote as in the primary election, he said, while Mr. Massa’s support grew after a campaign focused on the dangers of a Milei presidency. “Massa has a very strong chance to become Argentina’s next president,” Mr. Labaqui added. Those plans have gained traction with millions of Argentines as the nation grapples with its worst economic crisis in decades. Mr. Milei has also attracted attention in Argentina and abroad for his bellicose political style that has drawn comparisons — which he has embraced — to Donald J. Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president.

On a recent evening, the building’s oversize windows were open, filling the rooms with warm early fall air as roughly 50 guests milled about them. The occasion was a benefit dinner in support of the Marfa Restoration Plan, only the third such event held at 101 Spring Street since the building reopened to the public in 2013. Rainer greeted gallery directors, artists and old friends as they entered the ground floor exhibition space, where works by Judd hang on the walls. On the floor below, the chefs Ignacio Mattos and David Tanis were preparing a three-course meal designed in partnership with the chef and author Alice Waters that would be plated on the second floor. “They would’ve got on bonkers,” said Rainer of Waters and her father, both believers in making things slowly and with purpose.

Away from the front, Ukraine’s war has become a numbers game: who can acquire, make and resupply more tanks, bullets, and, most of all, artillery shells. All in all, Kyiv needs some 1.5 million artillery shells annually, according to the CEO of one of Europe’s largest arms manufacturers, Rheinmetall. By July, the US had supplied more than two million artillery rounds to Ukraine since the 2022 invasion, the Pentagon said. But in February 2023, Europe-wide production of artillery ammunition had a maximum capacity of 300,000 shells annually, Estonian defense officials estimated. The best-case scenario of an increase to making 2.1 million shells annually is still years away from being realized.

Underdogs Chile make four changes for Samoa game

TOULOUSE, France, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Chile coach Pablo Lemoine resisted the urge to make too many adjustments to the team for their Pool D Rugby World Cup match against Samoa on Saturday with four changes as they bid to bounce back from an opening defeat by Japan. Los Condores bring in Tomas Dussaillant at hooker, try a new second row pairing of Santiago Pedrero and Pablo Huete and give a start to Jose Ignacio Larenas on the left wing. The lowest ranked team at this World Cup and making their debut in the tournament, Chile notched two tries in the 42-12 loss to Japan but also suffered a pair of yellow cards and now look to the Samoa game as their best remaining chance of a win. Among the players to watch in the Chile side are full back Inaki Ayarza, a deft runner who sparked their opening score against Japan, and flyhalf Rodrigo Fernandez who finished it. The accomplished Fernandez has already caught the eye with his all-round game and will have to be at his best for Chile to beat Samoa for an unlikely first-ever win in a World Cup game.

"It is the tip of the iceberg publicly of what we used to see privately," Veronica Boquete, who captained Spain at their first World Cup in 2015, told Reuters. In the case of football, the women's team's efforts to combat sexism and achieve parity with their male peers date back nearly a decade. Boquete led a mutiny seeking the resignation of coach Ignacio Quereda after a woeful performance at the 2015 World Cup, the only one his teams reached in nearly three decades. Quereda resigned in 2015 in a statement issued by the federation making no reference to the players' mutiny. Trees stop making food for themselves when they get too hot, a new study shows. AdvertisementAdvertisementFor a new Nature study, scientists across the country found that photosynthesis begins to fail in tropical trees at 116 degrees Fahrenheit (46.7 degrees Celsius). NNehring/ Getty ImagesScientists already knew extreme heat makes leaves unable to photosynthesize, said Goldsmith, a co-author of the study. But "this study is really the first study to establish how close tropical forest canopies may be to these limits," he said. If all the trees in the tropical rainforests died off, that would release an estimated 228.7 petagrams of carbon into the atmosphere, according to a 2012 study.

The results from Sunday's vote left neither the left nor right bloc with an easy path to form a government. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez' Socialists have more options but face potentially unpalatable demands from Catalan separatist parties. Those could include insistence on an independence referendum, triggering the kind of political chaos seen in 2017 when Catalonia last tried to break from Spain. Sanchez could win over left-wing separatist party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), as he did to form a minority government in 2019. The Socialists, which oppose independence and any vote on the issue, may have a hard time accepting such a demand.
