BENGALURU, April 3 (Reuters) - The International Tennis Federation (ITF) will conduct its World Tennis Tour tournaments in China this year, marking a return to the Asian nation after a gap of three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport's global governing body said on Monday. "We think it's important that the World Tennis Tour and international events take place in all the nations around the world," ITF President David Haggerty told Reuters in a video interview in February. In the last full season in 2019 before the pandemic, China had hosted 25 ITF women's and 15 men's events. World Tennis Tour events are professional tournaments below the elite level. The tour will also stage the first ever World Tennis Tour event in Ethiopia and the first in Burundi and Cyprus since 2013 and 2016, respectively.

The ITF launched the Men as Allies programme, an element of the ITF Advantage All gender equality strategy. Sebastian Coe championed female leadership in a Twitter video, saying having women in positions of influence makes for a better organisation.

LONDON, Feb 28 (Reuters) - World number two Carlos Alcaraz will headline the Hopman Cup as the relaunched mixed-gender team event returns to the tennis calendar after a four-year absence in June. The 19-year-old Alcaraz will be part of the Spain team, one of three confirmed by the International Tennis Federation on Tuesday, alongside Paula Badosa. "Alongside the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup, the Hopman Cup is another ITF event that gives players the opportunity to represent their countries, and compete for something bigger than themselves," ITF President David Haggerty said at a news conference. The last edition of the competition, which began in 1989 and was named after Australian great Harry Hopman, saw Roger Federer lead Switzerland to the title against Germany. The Hopman Cup has a rival in the United Cup mixed-gender team event, featuring 18 nations playing matches across three Australian cities, taking place before this year's Australian Open.
MELBOURNE, Jan 27 (Reuters) - All four tennis Grand Slams will make it a priority to safeguard the Davis Cup men's team tournament, the governing body of the sport's most prestigious events said on Friday, two weeks after the ITF's partnership with investment group Kosmos ended. "Protecting the heritage of the sport and safeguarding major teams competitions such as the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup is a priority for the global tennis community and will appropriately get the Grand Slams' full attention," the Grand Slam board said in a statement. The board added that the Grand Slam tournaments were united in their support for the Davis Cup "recognising its historical significance and important role in growing engagement in our sport around the world." The ITF welcomed the statement and said it was looking forward to "leading further positive conversations" with the Grand Slam Board and the ATP in the build-up to this year's Davis Cup. "We are excited for another successful edition of the Davis Cup in 2023 and look forward to discussions to continue the future growth of the competition," the governing body added.
MELBOURNE, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The Azerbaijan Tennis Federation has demanded the International Tennis Federation (ITF) takes action against Karen Khachanov after the Russian sent messages of support to the breakaway Artsakh Republic from the Australian Open. The ethnically Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, known by the separatists as the Artsakh Republic, broke away from Azerbaijan with Armenian support after a bloody post-Soviet ethnic conflict in the early 1990s. In 2020, Azerbaijan launched a second war in the region, successfully winning back part of the territory controlled by the Armenian-backed separatists. Azerbaijan tennis authorities sent a letter of protest to the ITF at the weekend demanding tough measures "to punish" Khachanov and prevent him from making similar "unacceptable provocations" at tennis tournaments. Belarus is being used as a key staging ground for Russia's war in Ukraine, which Moscow terms a "special operation".
Jan 12 (Reuters) - The International Tennis Federation announced on Thursday that it was ending its Davis Cup partnership with Gerard Pique's investment group Kosmos. In 2018, the ITF had unveiled the 25-year, $3 billion partnership with former Barcelona soccer player Pique's investment group amid much fanfare. It said then that the package to revamp the Davis Cup competition would safeguard the future of the sport as it would "deliver long-term benefits for players, nations, fans, sponsors and broadcasters". "The ITF can confirm that its partnership with Kosmos Tennis for Davis Cup is ending in its fifth year," the ITF said in a statement. The partnership increased participation, prize money and interest in Davis Cup and produced funding to support the global development of our sport."
CNN —At first glance, winning seems impossibly easy for Diede de Groot; an almost nonchalant habit of 69 consecutive victories, yielding a Golden Slam – all four grand slams and a Paralympic gold medal – in 2021, followed by a calendar grand slam in 2022. De Groot's win at the 2022 US Open completed her back-to-back calendar grand slam. De Groot now plays doubles alongside Van Koot and they have won 11 doubles grand slam titles together. So I know each time it’s getting more difficult to keep up the winning streak.”De Groot celebrates winning her first grand slam title at Wimbledon in 2017. So far, de Groot has won 15 grand slam singles titles and 15 grand slam doubles titles.
