Max Levchin, Affirm's CEO and a PayPal alum, shares advice for founders considering going public. As a buy-now, pay-later company, Affirm's business model was built on the promise of repayment as it enabled consumers to finance their online purchases. As the pipeline of IPOs starts to build up again, including the anticipated debut of Affirm's buy-now, pay-later rival Klarna, Business Insider spoke with Levchin about Affirm's IPO. It's not uncommon to see startups hiring executives such as a president or CFO in anticipation of going public. Since Affirm's CFO and chief legal officer largely spearheaded the IPO process, Levchin said he was left to focus on the company's short- and long-term plans for the capital.

Southeast Asia's IPO market declined significantly in the first six months of 2024, with market capitalization plunging 71% to $5.8 billion, a report from Deloitte showed. There were no blockbuster IPOs from January to June, with only one large IPO with market capitalization of more than $1 billion and raising more than $200 million, Deloitte said. In the same period a year ago, there were three large IPOs which raised more than $600 million each. The downward trend signals "subdued IPO market sentiments where investors and IPO candidates continue to navigate macroeconomic factors," Deloitte said. Still, the report pointed out that historically, the latter half of the year "has always been the better performing half between 2020 to 2022."

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing celebrates the 24th anniversary of its listing on June 21, 2024. "We are seeing more of these [U.S. dollar] funds, they are moving back to Hong Kong. "I would say if the interest rate can be further cut down, 1% maybe, that would have a significant effect on the IPO market," Chan said. Hong Kong IPO returns are improving. "These things added together are projecting an upward trend for the Hong Kong market [in the] next 5 years."

Silicon Valley is known for producing tech businesses that start in garages and turn into massive publicly traded companies ubiquitously known across the globe. From Oracle and Microsoft to Google and Facebook , the public markets are responsible for turning ambitious tech founders into billionaires. But the appeal of the IPO is waning, according to a survey published this week from startup accelerator Techstars. Of the 1,550 entrepreneurs surveyed by Techstars, only 15% said their long-term goal is an IPO. There have been scant few notable tech IPOs in the past two and a half years.

The Shein logo can be seen on a smartphone, while the Chinese online retailer's website is open on a laptop. China-founded e-commerce company Shein's hopes of going public in the United States are growing slimmer by the day, according to experts, as rising tensions between Beijing and the U.S. roil business and trade. A London IPO could, in theory, be easier than a U.S. offering, according to Bochanis. If Shein's London IPO succeeds, it is unlikely to keep pursuing a U.S. offering, said University of Florida finance professor Jay Ritter, who studies IPOs. It became one of the first prominent Chinese companies to do so in the U.S. even as the Biden administration has increasingly cracked down on Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Mike Segar | ReutersBEIJING — Chinese authorities this week announced new policy for supporting venture capital, raising hopes for faster approvals of initial public offerings in the near future. The new policy included a section on expanding exit channels for venture capital, with an emphasis on supporting companies with technological breakthroughs. Investors, especially those who put U.S. dollars into China-based venture capital funds, have preferred IPOs in the U.S. as the largest and most liquid market. Separately, the U.S. has increased its scrutiny of U.S. capital going into China, especially military-related entities. The China Securities Regulatory Commission has increased fines for misleading investors and clarified requirements for overseas IPOs.

CNBC's Jim Cramer said to be cautious when the market is flooded with initial public offerings because the influx of new stocks will inevitably drag the market down. "The IPO cycle tends to start out strong and generate a lot of euphoria, but then it burns out and all the new stock supply can really weigh on the market." These stocks eventually ended up getting crushed, Cramer said, with him pointing out that many plunged "more than 90% from peak to trough." According to Cramer, all of these new stocks overwhelmed Wall Street — there was too much supply and not enough demand. "I've said it a million times: the stock market is like any other market, it's all about supply and demand," he said.

The spotlight has seemingly shifted in the past year toward companies going to market, hoping to ride on the coattails of India's growth story. Growing foreign listingsThe allure of India's stock markets has trickled to companies beyond its shores — with foreign entities eyeing a share of its growth. Such listings add strength to India's markets, says M&G Investment's Asian Equities Portfolio Manager Vikas Pershad. The optimism on India's IPO boom is sometimes marred by concerns over elevated valuations of its stock market — and whether it is headed toward a bubble. "When we look at India, we see continued economic and earnings per share growth and higher levels of profitability," Dorson from Global X told CNBC's Inside India.

The timeline between filing the form and the actual IPO ranges, but it usually happens between several months and a year. If the float represents a very low share of total shares outstanding, it means more potential volatility in the stock. The smaller the IPO, or lower the float, the stronger the likelihood of a big swing post-lockup. If we are seeking to determine intrinsic value, the lockup period shouldn't impact our decision on whether the stock is a buy or not. If Shein goes ahead with the listing, it is expected to try to raise more than £1 billion ($1.3 billion) from the sale of new shares, Sky News said. Bloomberg and the Financial Times have also reported that Shein is preparing a confidential filing for a London listing. Given its high profile and potential hefty valuation, an IPO by Shein would be a much-needed coup for the London Stock Exchange. In recent years, several companies have quit the exchange for other cities or chosen New York to go public. Still, even the slightest hint that Shell could ditch London will have rattled the city’s financial center.
