The Federal Trade Commission used two very different rationales to get to its near-total ban this week on noncompete agreements. The easy prong of the ban for the F.T.C. to justify is the one that applies to nurses, hairdressers, truck drivers — actually, every kind of worker except for senior executives. They typically have some power in the employment negotiation and know how to use it. Many won’t sign a noncompete agreement unless they get something in return, such as a sweetened pay package.

CNN —Ryōyū Kobayashi might have bettered the world ski jump record by nearly 40 meters on Wednesday, but the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) says it won’t recognize the Japanese jumper’s landmark effort as it didn’t meet the governing body’s competition conditions. Kobayashi flew through the air for around 10 seconds before delivering a smooth landing on Wednesday, video shows. “A ski flying competition must be based on a FIS-certified distance measuring system and take place on a ski flying hill homologated by FIS in order to stand up to comparison with other flights and be eligible for an official ski flying record,’ added the FIS. Austrian Stefan Kraft holds the FIS record for the longest competitive ski jump for a male after landing a 253.5m (831 ft 8.31 in) jump in Vikersund, Norway, in 2017. I think the theme for last week was the return of adult supervision. CNN —Lesbian Visibility Week, celebrated each year at the end of April, was first observed in California in 1990 and is marked around the world and in lesbian living rooms across America — including mine. Many laws have criminalized gay men but not women, leaving us in slightly safer territory. Gay men are also more likely to be victims of hate crimes and violence. Gay men might be criminalized, but gay women have long been targeted, sometimes in heinous ways that fly under the radar of the law, and which go unprosecuted. I don’t think I’m overstating the case to say that time spent with poems and gardens build pathways that actually repair us. In their own small plots, poems build diverse networks as well: Sinking into the rhythms and pleasures of literature stimulates the parts of our brains attuned to empathy, helping us build attention, kindness, compassion, regard. I was gifted with a new way of seeing the day I got mugged underwater. A couple years earlier, another curious octopus stole the wedding ring off my wife’s finger, never to be recovered. As I wondered how to get my camera back without alarming my young friend, something surprising happened. Today, the recently-turned 90-year-old’s work looks a little different – taking place mostly indoors, and with a different crowd. Through her program called “Roots & Shoots,” Goodall empowers young people to create change within their communities. CNN spoke with Goodall recently during a trip to South Africa, where she observed some of the projects local Johannesburg students are heading up as part of Roots & Shoots. Goodall: I think it’s really important, this exchange of information from the elders to the youngers. Goodall: When I began Roots & Shoots in Tanzania in 1991, it was because I was meeting young people then who had lost hope.
