‘Clock’ Review: Hulu’s Hormonal Horror Movie
  + stars: | 2023-04-26 | by ( John Anderson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Is the hormonal urgency to go one way or the other something that can—or should—be “fixed”? Comedy contusions aside, “Clock” is a movie that finds horror in biology, as well as in peer pressure and the impulse to conform. Upon being asked, she immediately drifts into a reverie about her daily regimen—swimming, sex, cooking, work, volunteering, massages. “All women have a biological clock,” says her gynecologist ( Nikita Patel ). “Maybe yours is just broken.” An appalling thing for a doctor to say, perhaps, but Ella has been wondering the same thing.
Hulu’s series “The 1619 Project” blames economic inequality between blacks and whites on “racial capitalism.” But almost every example presented is the result of government policies that, in purpose or effect, discriminated against African-Americans. “The 1619 Project” makes an unintentional case for capitalism. The series gives many examples of government interventions that undercut free markets and property rights. Eminent domain, racial red lining of mortgages, and government support and enforcement of union monopolies figure prominently.
There aren’t a lot of questions left about the past—or future—of Lawrence Ray : On Jan. 20, the 63-year-old was sentenced to 60 years in prison for extortion, racketeering, sex trafficking and other offenses. The U.S. attorney termed him a “monster.” After watching Hulu’s “Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence,” a viewer might think the prosecutor was being generous. But there is a puzzlement addressed by director Zach Heinzerling ’s three-part docu-series, and it is the same one that has hovered over the case ever since it became news—how did it all happen? How did a then-50-year-old con man move into his daughter’s communal apartment at the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., brainwash her roommates and create a cult-like situation that would persist for almost 10 years? How did the victims allow it to happen?
According to Orange County Superior Court records, Roiland pleaded not guilty to both charges in October 2020. Roiland was arrested and released on a $50,000 bond in August 2020 and arraigned in October 2020. Over the past three years, as the domestic violence case has inched along, Roiland’s career has progressed. Roiland also released the video game “High on Life” in 2022, which he developed through his studio Squanch Games. Roiland won an Emmy for “Rick and Morty” in 2020 and a Hollywood Critics Choice Association TV award for the show in 2022.
Robin De Jesús always shows up. Kumail Nanjiani and Robin de Jesús in "Welcome to Chippendales." “With or without my consent, as a Latino actor, even with my light skin, I end up being the representative of my specific demographics: Latino Puerto Rican, working class,” the actor said. “It helped me clarify who my character was and his intentions.”Robin de Jesús and Kumail Nanjiani in "Welcome to Chippendales." “I’m a very fortunate actor that I get to do really, really beautiful work, but I’m still in my come-up,” he said.
CNN —If you find yourself disliking everyone in Hulu’s too precious “Fleishman is in Trouble,” don’t worry, because it’s not clear they like themselves. Brodesser-Akner writes for the New York Times magazine, which becomes readily apparent in this Manhattan-centered story about the angst-ridden well to do, which approximates what the Times’ Sunday Styles section would look like if it sprouted legs. The initial focus is on newly divorced Toby Fleishman (Eisenberg), whose story is told by his college friend Libby (Caplan), serving as the relentless narrator of everyone’s innermost thoughts. The series periodically flashes back to Toby and Rachel’s younger days, showing how they met and how the relationship soured. “Fleishman is in Trouble” premieres November 17 on Hulu.
CNN —Selena Gomez says her new documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” has shifted her view on her body image. “I think my advice is to not be afraid. I never actually was afraid to tell people that I wanna take time for myself. I never thought that was a bad thing,” she said. Gomez also currently stars in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Granda proceeded to have a long relationship with Becki Falwell, alleging that her husband was fully aware of the arrangement throughout, and endeavored to create real-estate opportunities for Granda in part to keep his wife happy. He admits that he was ambitious but basically over his head dealing with the older Falwells, while being bedazzled by their money and connections. Jerry Falwell resigned from Liberty in 2020, acknowledging Becki Falwell’s affair with Granda, while stating he was “not involved.” He also claimed that Granda had sought to blackmail the couple, a charge Granda has denied. “God Forbid” clearly provides Granda a friendly forum to tell his story, which includes how he came out on the other side of his 15 minutes of notoriety. “God Forbid: The Sex Scandal that Brought Down a Dynasty” premieres November 1 on Hulu.
CNN —Although the new “Hellraiser” is billed as “reimagining” Clive Barker’s 1987 horror film, it’s not like the title ever went away, raising six direct-to-video productions (the last one in 2018) after the four theatrical movies. It also fits Hulu’s strategy of premiering movies culled from well-known franchises, with “Prey” – from the “Predator” universe – among the recent examples. For those just seeking another fix of Pinhead and the Cenobites, that’s probably enough to get the job done. But once “Hellraiser” has made that, er, point, the movie feels more like a snack – or ‘bite – than a meal. “Hellraiser” premieres October 7 on Hulu.
ESPN would help Disney and Comcast settle a score
  + stars: | 2022-09-23 | by ( Jennifer Saba | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - When it comes to modern corporate sagas, few deliver the drama between Walt Disney (DIS.N) and Comcast (CMCSA.O). Comcast Chief Executive Brian Roberts is in position to let his counterpart squirm, but there’s a neat solution to help settle the score: ESPN. He feared Comcast “would have paid more later.”Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterBefore long, Comcast clashed again with Disney. To settle the matter, the two parent companies agreed that in January 2024 Comcast could force Disney to buy its stake or Disney could require Comcast to sell based on a minimum valuation of $27.5 billion. Disney owns two-thirds of Hulu and Comcast owns the rest.
Eight years after the show’s debut, the podcast circuit across all storytelling genres has never been more crowded or competitive. But in today’s oversaturated market, could any one show prove to be as singularly culture-shaping — influential enough to help free an imprisoned person? “I remember a time when I could keep up on new podcast series, but nowadays that seems virtually impossible,” he added. Cindy Ord / Getty Images file“Serial” is not the only podcast to have helped put more focus on a possible miscarriage of justice. In the years since, the stylistic tropes of true-crime podcasting have become all too easy to satirize.
Witnessing Arab women flourish on the small screen, showcasing their talents and breaking through the presumption that they are oppressed is widely significant. That is not to say Arab women live in a utopia in the Middle East. The implication is that these Arab women have no depth to their character other than their attire. Just as common are images of Arab women living as concubines in harems waiting to please men. But the achievements of the past week should help to break down the stereotypes surrounding Arab women and inspire them to dream big.
