On Thursday, Charles, Camilla, Macron and his wife Brigitte will visit the Notre-Dame cathedral to view restoration works following a massive blaze in 2019 that destroyed its roof. Charles and Camilla will then head to the southwestern city of Bordeaux on Friday, where excursions will include a visit to an organic vineyard. Charles had hoped for a state visit to France to have been his first as king, but a March trip was postponed due to tense protests in France over pension reforms, much to Macron's embarrassment. Her successor, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, visited France in March to kick off what he called an "entente renewed". Fifteen year-old Alexia Aubert said: "I think since Elizabeth died, the royal family isn't as important as it was, King Charles isn't as important and symbolic as Elizabeth, so it doesn't really matter if he comes or not."

Sandra Bullock and the Rise of Tech
  + stars: | 2023-09-15 | by ( Jim Windolf | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
At some point in the future, the sentient beings running the planet may want to study how the humans dealt with the technological revolution of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. After they have ingested the pertinent scholarly essays and news reports, they will have a pretty good idea of how we managed the shift to a world increasingly driven by machines. But why stop at enough when they might deepen their understanding by looking into something that might seem irrelevant at first glance: the films of Sandra Bullock, one of the biggest stars of the transitional period. Ms. Bullock had the good or bad fortune to have been born in 1964, meaning she was young enough to adapt to tech culture when it came along but old enough to mourn the passing of the environment that had shaped her. Her movies are time capsules that preserve the look and feel of discrete moments in tech, some of them all but forgotten.

The chocolatier and torturer of naughty children is getting the prequel treatment in a new film starring Timothée Chalamet, coming to cinemas in December. Chalamet steps into shoes previously filled by Gene Wilder in 1971 and Johnny Depp in 2005. Speaking in London ahead of the teaser trailer release, King promised an all singing, all dancing Chalamet and a film that “answers all the questions you never had” about Wonka. The director shared that he’d accessed Dahl’s personal archives and read early drafts of the novel, gleaning ideas from there. CNN and Warner Bros. Pictures are units of Warner Bros.

The film, out in December, is set before the 1971 movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", starring Wilder as Wonka in an adaptation of Dahl's beloved 1964 book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". The new movie sees Wonka arriving in a fictional European city, which is home to master chocolatiers. Like Wilder, and Depp in the 2005 film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", Chalamet is dressed in Wonka's top hat and long jacket. The trailer also shows Chalamet's famous co-stars, including Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa.

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - Prince Harry on Wednesday fought to take his phone-hacking lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm to trial, asking London's High Court to let him rely on an alleged "secret agreement" between Britain's royal family and the publisher. David Sherborne, representing Harry, argued there was clear evidence of an agreement between NGN and the royal family, which meant Harry was unable to bring his lawsuit earlier. Harry also said his attempts to progress his case against NGN, with the backing of the late Queen Elizabeth, were stonewalled by NGN and royal aides. Sherborne argued in court filings on Wednesday that NGN had not provided any evidence from Brooks and Thomson "despite their evidence having been identified as critical". He became the first senior British royal to appear in a witness box for more than 130 years when he gave evidence in his MGN lawsuit last month.

CNN —For a man whose life has been marked by ceaseless public interest in his every move, Prince Harry’s performance over the last few days has felt remarkably amateur. The issue of phone hacking by Britain’s tabloid media is far more insidious than some coverage of Harry’s testimony might suggest. In 2021, it settled phone hacking claims with other actors including Martin Clunes and David Walliams, and issued an apology. So much of Harry’s life and experience is unrelatable and apparently contradictory. But none of us is ever likely to be judged as exhaustively — or as loudly — as Prince Harry.

Clive Goodman, the News of the World's then royal reporter, was jailed in 2007 for illegally intercepting royal household phone messages. Harry, estranged from his father King Charles, says he did not bring a lawsuit earlier because of a "secret agreement" between Buckingham Palace and Murdoch's executives to protect the royal family from embarrassment. News Group denies any such agreement, while the palace has not commented. Osman told Brooks in a separate 2018 email that there was an "institutional appetite" within the royal family to resolve Harry’s phone-hacking case. Harry, who now lives in California with his family, was not in court, but is following the proceedings by video link.
LONDON, April 26 (Reuters) - Prince Harry is not criticising his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, or Britain's royal family over a "secret agreement" with Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm, his lawyer told London's High Court on Wednesday. His lawyer David Sherborne told the court on Wednesday that Harry did not bring his lawsuit previously because of the agreement with NGN, which denies its existence. Sherborne said Harry was "told more" about phone hacking in 2012, when Harry says in his witness statement that he was told his voicemails had been intercepted, "but that was essentially dealt with by his family ... and their solicitor". "This is no criticism of the queen or his family," Sherborne said. Harry, who now lives in California with his family, was not in court, but watched proceedings by video link, Sherborne said.
Despite having the backing of the late Queen Elizabeth to take on the Murdoch group, Harry said attempts to get an apology from them had been stonewalled. "This goes to prove the existence of this secret agreement between the institution and senior executives at NGN." William's office said it could not comment on ongoing legal proceedings and NGN had no comment on the deal with William. The queen gave her backing for him to pursue his case and seek an apology from Murdoch himself, he said. Harry, who now lives in California with his family, was not in court, but would be watching proceedings by videolink, his lawyer David Sherborne said.
But for now, the price tag attached to the Dominion case isn’t the worst Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch has had to stomach. A phone hacking scandal involving Murdoch’s tabloid newspaper empire in the United Kingdom has proven much more costly over the past decade or so. It looked at legal fees and damages, as well as expenses tied to the subsequent restructuring of Murdoch’s UK media empire. The last big Murdoch legal fightThe editor of Murdoch’s News of the World and a private investigator were convicted of conspiracy to hack the voicemails of British royals in 2007. Britain’s Prince Harry and actor Hugh Grant are among those who have filed legal challenges against The Sun tied to phone hacking.
It’s amusing to think that a generation of movie watchers may be unaware that Hugh Grant was once a floppy-haired charmer. Playing a duplicitous failed actor in “Paddington 2,” a murder-minded politician in “A Very English Scandal,” a sleazy tabloid reporter in “The Gentlemen” and himself on the red carpet at the Oscars, Mr. Grant in maturity is proving to be one of the screen’s most entertaining miscreants. He is the most delightful element of some very good movies. He is also the best thing about “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”Mr. Grant’s gleeful villainy pumps (some) life into his scenes as a scheming usurper in the medieval-ish fantasy world of “D&D,” where monsters and wizards coexist with humans who seem far too unimpressed by the wonders around them. Leading the band of the nonchalant is Chris Pine as Edgin, who in a prologue establishes himself as a literal social-justice warrior (he rides around righting wrongs in defense of the downtrodden) who turns into a rascally thief after his wife gets murdered.

CNN —Every year, as the days grow colder and Christmas draws nearer, “Love Actually” quickly becomes a festive favorite on people’s television screens. But nearly 20 years on from the release of the 2003 romantic comedy, the movie has faced scrutiny over its story lines and lack of diversity. “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is a bit of a clunky title. But the film itself, which only ever calls itself “Glass Onion” on screen, is a delightful trifle of a mystery movie, a laugh-out-loud comedy that deserves to be a mass market theatrical hit. Perhaps “Glass Onion” is better experienced on streaming — at least philosophically. But perhaps “Glass Onion” is better experienced on streaming — at least philosophically. That being said, “Glass Onion” is as wonderfully enjoyable as its predecessor, even though there’s little need to connect the two.
