Rules facilitating digital trade, including the cross-border transfer of data on customers and supply chains, were expected to be a centerpiece of what is called the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, or IPEF, a U.S.-led group of 14 nations. But the U.S. recently withdrew its support for those provisions, a decision that cut against the desires of some Asian allies who see common rules governing business data as a cornerstone building block for economic cooperation.

Intel has ruled the market for central processing units since the 1980s. But rival AMD overtook Intel in market value last year, thanks in part to an expensive bet on chip design. Intel is the leading candidate to potentially receive billions of dollars in government funding for secure facilities producing microchips for U.S. military and intelligence applications. The facilities—which have yet to be disclosed publicly—would be explicitly designated as a “secure enclave,” according to people familiar with the development. The goal is to reduce the U.S. military’s dependence on chips imported from East Asia, particularly Taiwan, which some say is vulnerable to Chinese invasion.

He and his colleagues have already turned skin cells from male mice into mouse eggs and used them to breed baby mice. Matt Krisiloff , chief executive officer of Conception Biosciences, has dozens of scientists working at a lab in Berkeley, Calif., trying to make eggs outside ovaries. Such a technique could allow women to have biological children later in life.

Filing a WTO complaint might become an option if protesting to China through diplomatic routes is ineffective, Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi said separately. Japan's National Police Agency has received 225 reports of harassment calls to date, Jiji News reported, and the government said it was seeking help from telecommunications companies to block the calls. NTT and other phone companies including KDDI (9433.T) and SoftBank Corp (9434.T) are discussing measures following the government's request.
