What mortgage rates over 7% mean for the housing market

Washington, DC CNN —An already miserably unaffordable housing market is getting more expensive. As mortgage rates top 7% — the highest they’ve been in 21 years according to Freddie Mac — home buyers face ballooning costs. “The fact that we are seeing rates at these highs is having an impact on the housing market,” Freedman said. “That’s bad news for mortgage rates which correspondingly may rise to 8%,” he said. “We thought mortgage rates would be much lower by now,” she said.

Members of law enforcement work at the scene of a weekend shooting at a Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York, U.S. May 19, 2022. Also sued were three retailers--Mean Arms, Vintage Firearms and RMA Armament--that allegedly sold firearm equipment and body armor that Gendron used. Alphabet (GOOGL.O) and Google, which own YouTube, are also defendants, as are Gendron's parents. Through the defendants' alleged negligence, Gendron "gained the racist motivation, tools and knowledge necessary for him to commit the mass shooting," the complaint said. Representatives for Hermes and Rothschild did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the decision. Hermes said in a filing in March that Rothschild continued to market his NFTs after the jury's verdict. Rothschild told the court that Hermes' request went "far beyond what is appropriate in a case, like this one, that involves artistic expression." Rakoff largely granted Hermes' request, but decided not to order Rothschild to transfer the tokens out of an "abundance of caution" for 1st Amendment concerns. The case is Hermes International v. If Roman Roy were a real person, he wouldn’t live on the Upper West Side. So said a real-life real estate broker recently. Fans of the show were there with Roman (played by Kieran Culkin) during a recent episode when he solemnly brushed his teeth the morning after a devastating plot twist. Daniella G. Schlisser, the real-life associate broker with Brown Harris Stevens and a listing agent for the apartment, said that if Roman were a real person, she would redirect him south, probably to TriBeCa, where he might receiver a warmer welcome. Given his winning personality, she’d advise him: “No one’s going to talk to you here — you won’t make any friends” in the family-oriented Upper West Side.
Law Firms Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP Follow(Reuters) - New York-founded law firm Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel said Tuesday that it has hired former Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan Estes, who co-led the general crimes unit in the Southern District of New York, for its white-collar and government investigations practice. Estes was the lead or co-lead prosecutor on 13 criminal trials ranging from securities fraud matters, insider trading, bank fraud, health care fraud and racketeering, Kramer Levin said. Estes helped secure last year's conviction of Trevor Milton, the founder of electric vehicle company Nikola Corp, on charges that he defrauded investors. In February, prominent Kramer Levin white-collar partner Barry Pollack left the firm to join New York midsize law firm Harris St. Laurent & Wechsler's new Washington, D.C. office. [1/4] U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris talks to her Tanzanian counterpart Philip Mpango as she arrives in Tanzania, the second stop of a three-nation tour of Africa, at the Julius Nyerere Airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania March 29, 2023. "Working together, it is our shared goal to increase economic investment in Tanzania and strengthen our economic ties," Harris said, listing a number of initiatives. China has invested heavily in Africa in the last two decades, and last November the Tanzanian president met China's President Xi Jinping during a state visit to Beijing. Under Hassan, Tanzania has returned to international engagement after a period of isolationism enforced by her predecessor John Magufuli, who cancelled all his ministers' foreign trips and discouraged travel. "Madam President, under your leadership Tanzania has taken important and meaningful steps and President Joe Biden and I applaud you," Harris said, standing alongside Hassan.
Akufo-Addo reiterated that he was concerned about Wagner's presence in West Africa. Several countries across West Africa and the Sahel region have been struggling to quell Islamist insurgencies that have caused humanitarian disasters and fuelled discontent -- contributing factors to military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso. "We appreciate your leadership in response to recent democratic back-sliding in West Africa," Harris told Akufo-Addo. WASHINGTON, March 24 (Reuters) - Vice President Kamala Harris starts a weeklong trip to Africa this weekend as the United States seeks to pitch itself as a better partner than China, which has invested heavily in the continent over several decades. Harris will discuss China's engagement in technology and economic issues in Africa that concern the United States, as well as China's involvement in debt restructuring, senior U.S. officials said. The White House hosted an Africa Leaders Summit in December, and President Joe Biden is expected to travel to Africa this year. "The Vice President is very much looking forward to returning to Lusaka, which is a part of her family's story and a source of pride," one of the officials said. Harris will also meet with young leaders and business representatives and discuss topics such as climate change and food insecurity.
[1/3] U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris stand on stage together after delivering remarks at the DNC 2023 Winter Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., February 3, 2023. Biden could lose crucial votes if he were to drop Harris, who is both the first Black and Asian-American U.S. vice president. While the vice president has disappointed some inside her party, Democrats see opportunity in the 2024 race. He leans on her a lot," said Cedric Richmond, a former congressman and former senior adviser in Biden's White House. "That was not her assignment," said the third former White House official, referring to reducing migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border broadly.

Kamala Harris dodged a question about if Biden broke a campaign promise with the Willow project. On Wednesday night's episode of "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," Colbert first asked Harris what the major issues will be that define the upcoming 2024 election, in which Biden and Harris are expected to run for re-election. Colbert asked the Vice President. Colbert then asked about the blowback the Biden-Harris administration is now facing because of the Willow project approval. After pushing her three times, Harris still would not answer whether Biden broke a campaign promise, prompting Colbert to move on in the interview.
Harris started to cut its exposure in October after Credit Suisse raised 4 billion Swiss francs ($4.27 billion) from investors, and when Saudi National Bank supplanted it as the top investor, David Herro, deputy chairman of Harris Associates, told the Financial Times. Credit Suisse reported a sharp acceleration in withdrawals in the fourth quarter, with outflows of more than 110 billion Swiss francs ($120 billion). In an emailed statement to Reuters on Sunday, Credit Suisse said, "we are ahead of our plan and have clear strategic objectives." "We are laser focused on successfully executing our plan and on progressing toward our targets to ensure new Credit Suisse delivers sustainable value for all our stakeholders," the statement added. Credit Suisse last month reported its biggest annual loss since the 2008 global financial crisis after rattled clients pulled billions from the bank, and it warned of a further "substantial" loss this year.

Manhattan rents hit an all-time high in January

Median rents in Manhattan hit a new record in January as a strong job market and limited supply of apartments lifted prices. But despite a cooling economy and high-profile layoffs in finance and tech, rental demand in Manhattan remains strong. Analysts say the main driver for Manhattan's rental market is a strong job market. Analysts say rents aren't likely to come down much, if at all, in the coming months, unless the economy and job market loses steam. "I believe 2023 will be just as strong as 2022 as far as the rental market [goes]," Young said.
Right now, Wahi argued, crypto users are simply left guessing about their exposure to SEC enforcement — and that's not sustainable. That strategy, Hodl Law asserted, didn't give token-holders fair notice about whether their coins are securities. Otherwise, Hodl Law said, Ethereum users have no idea if the SEC will swoop in with an enforcement action. The SEC also said that it's not obliged to warn crypto users about its interpretation of securities laws. It also, however, provides the first robust explanation of an argument I expect to see more often in SEC crypto cases: SEC enforcement, according to Wahi, is precluded by the Supreme Court’s recently articulated major questions doctrine.

Greg Abbott after busloads of migrants arrived in Washington, DC. Busloads of migrants arrived on Christmas Eve outside of Vice President Kamala Harris' home. The move comes as the future of an immigration policy known as Title 42 remains uncertain. "Governor Abbott abandoned children on the side of the road in below freezing temperatures on Christmas Eve without coordinating with any Federal or local authorities," White House spokesperson Abdullah Hasan said in a statement. Abbott previously sent migrants to Harris' home in September to pressure the administration to take further action.
New York CNN Business —Each week brings head-scratching contradictory news about the economy. This past week was no different, with a batch of economic reports showing that — despite the recession talk — the US economy shows remarkable resilience. Yes, the economy is strong. “The labor market is incredibly strong again,” Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell in a speech last month. That means the next year will no question be a challenge as all that tightening continues to work its way through the economy.
