March 13 (Reuters) - China will begin re-issuing various categories of visas to foreigners from March 15, the Chinese Embassy in the United States said on Monday, as the country continues to re-open its borders after three years of COVID-19 containment measures. In a statement, the embassy said China will also lift visa restrictions for various locations, including Hainan Island and cruise ships passing through Shanghai port. Visa-free entry to Guangdong for foreigners from Hong Kong and Macao will also be resumed, the embassy said. China, which dismantled its zero-COVID-19 policy in December and opened its borders a month later, has seen a sharp increase in travel over the past two months. The country's leaders had signalled victory over a recent COVID-19 surge that gripped the country for months.

A Chinese J-11 fighter jet flew within 20 feet of a US military aircraft over the South China Sea. US Indo-Pacific Command said the Chinese "flew an unsafe maneuver" during the December 21 encounter. The US plane, an RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, had to take evasive action, the command said. A video of the incident released by the US military shows the Chinese J-11 jet flying alongside the RC-135. "We expect all countries in the Indo-Pacific region to use international airspace safely and in accordance with international law," the command added.

The debris appeared to be from a Chinese rocket launch. The Chinese coast guard vessel then deployed an inflatable boat with personnel who “forcefully retrieved said floating object by cutting the towing line attached to the” Filipino sailors’ rubber boat. Cherryl Tindog, spokesperson of the military’s Western Command, said the floating metal object appeared similar to a number of other pieces of Chinese rocket debris recently found in Philippine waters. She added the Filipino sailors did not fight the seizure.

HONG KONG, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Almost 40 residential buildings of China Evergrande Group's (3333.HK) mega resort project on Hainan island seized by the local government will be completed for rental housing, serviced apartments and commercial activities. In December, the government of Danzhou city ordered demolition of 39 towers in the Ocean Flower Island development, containing roughly 3,900 of the project's 65,000 homes, because of environmental and construction violations. Ocean Flower Island is the world's largest artificial resort island and has been under development by Evergrande for nearly $13 billion. By April, local media were reporting that the local authorities had changed the status of those towers to "confiscation" from "demolition".
