Last week, Google announced plans to change its search results page to prioritize a feature called "AI Overview," which uses AI to summarize information at the top of a search results page. Google said on Tuesday there will be ads within AI Overview and that they will be relevant to both the query and the information. The ads include virtual try-on options, a technology Google rolled out last year with select retailers. Executives said at the time of the report last month that they saw increased customer conversions from ad clients using generative AI tools in its "Performance Max." The company said it is giving advertisers more image editing tools and said Google AI will generate more visual options and "context" for their ads.

Steve Jobs' former intern has some sage advice for college graduates: stop focusing on working for big companies and instead find the best people to work for. Chet Kapoor, chairman and CEO of generative AI company DataStax, has had an illustrious career in Silicon Valley. The Kolkata-born tech leader started out working at Steve Jobs' software company NeXT in 1986 and went on to become CEO of API management company Apigee which was acquired by Google in a $625 million deal in 2016. Kapoor said his experience observing Jobs played a role in shaping his leadership style. "I can attribute a large portion of my success to my first two or three years at NeXT," he added.

First Solar's earnings are expected to surge 374% to $36.74 per share in 2027, analysts led by Jon Windham told clients in a research note Tuesday. Utility-scale solar represents 80% of the corporate power purchase agreements over the past five years, and the four tech companies represent 40% of utility-sale solar demand, according to UBS. First Solar makes thin-film solar modules rather than silicon-based modules that are dominated globally by China. This will allow First Solar customers to benefit from the 10% domestic content tax credit under the IRA, which is worth about 10 cents per watt of solar power. "FSLR is also a hedge against potential weakness in the 'sustainability' of the Chinese silicon based solar supply chain."

Vistra Corp. has doubled over that period, while Constellation Energy is up nearly 62% and NextEra Energy has surged 34%. "This is not your old utility, where you just get a dividend and you're happy," Shahriar Pourreza, managing director of energy, power and utilities at Guggenheim Partners, told CNBC. The sector was oversold coming into 2024, with the market going too far in pricing in the impact of interest rates, Pourreza said. Power companies with deregulated assets are able to respond to market conditions more quickly than traditional utilities, he said. The tech sector is looking for clean energy to power data centers as they are simultaneously trying to limit their carbon footprints.

OpenAI announced it would pull one of the ChatGPT voices named "Sky" after it created controversy for its resemblance to the voice of actress Scarlett Johansson in "Her," a movie about artificial intelligence. News publishers are navigating challenging terrain, and most have been forced to undergo painful layoffs in recent years, including Vox. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Dartmouth College voted on Monday to censure the university’s president, Sian Leah Beilock, over her decision to summon the police to remove a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus, calling her action harmful to the community and disruptive to the university’s educational mission. The censure motion was adopted by a vote of 183 to 163, according to Justin Anderson, a spokesman for Dartmouth. The close vote illustrated the division on campus over Dr. Beilock’s decision on May 1, made just hours after the encampment had been erected on the college green. At the meeting, Dr. Beilock defended her actions, saying that she believed there was a reasonable and credible threat of violence. Monday’s vote was believed to be the first censure vote against a president of Dartmouth in its 255-year history.
