For Nissan Motor Co. finance chief Stephen Ma, the weak yen has been both a boon and a bane. “The current weakness of the yen has given us short-term benefits, which is good,” Mr. Ma said. Mr. Ma said he is working to repay debt and increase the auto maker’s profitability while managing issues such as currency volatility, semiconductor shortages and pricing. “We have some stickiness in terms of pricing power,” Mr. Ma said. Nissan has had “common sense, commercial-based” discussions with Renault, according to Mr. Ma.
PARIS, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Renault's (RENA.PA) chairman on Tuesday told Reuters on Tuesday he was "confident" the French carmaker will reach an agreement with its Japanese partner Nissan (7201.T) on the future of their alliance. Ongoing talks between Renault and Nissan about their alliance could prompt the biggest reset in the tie-up since the 2018 arrest of longtime executive Carlos Ghosn, but it still has to be confirmed how they play out. Asked by Reuters whether any announcement on the matter will be made by mid-December, as suggested by some sources, Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard declined to comment. Nov 17 (Reuters) - Renault SA (RENA.PA) may transfer more than half of a stake it owns in Nissan Motor (7201.T) to a trust to match the Japanese carmaker's holdings in itself, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Thursday. Renault would transfer a 28% stake it owns in Nissan to and would be left with a 15% stake, equivalent to what Nissan owns in the French automaker, the Nikkei said. Renault, which currently owns 43% of Nissan, would give up voting rights tied to the transferred shares, the newspaper added. Spokespeople for Renault and Nissan were not immediately available to comment. People with knowledge of the talks have said that Renault's stake in Nissan could be reduced to 15%.
TOKYO — An American father and son convicted in Japan on charges of helping former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn escape to Lebanon by hiding in a box have been returned to the U.S., their lawyer said Tuesday. The U.S. and Japan have an extradition treaty, while Lebanon has no extradition treaty with Japan. Peter Taylor has already been released, and is back with his family in Massachusetts, said Kelly, whose office is based in Boston. During their trial in Tokyo, Michael and Peter Taylor apologized and acknowledged guilt, saying they had been misled by Ghosn. He says he fled because he could not expect a fair trial in Japan.
The American father and son who helped former Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. Chairman Carlos Ghosn escape from Japan have returned to the U.S. after spending 20 months in Japanese jails. Michael Taylor , a 62-year-old former Green Beret, is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles with a release date set for Jan. 1, 2023, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. His son Peter Taylor is back home in Massachusetts with his family, according to their lawyer, Paul V. Kelly . Mr. Kelly said he was in discussions with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and parole officials about releasing his client sooner. Bloomberg News reported earlier that the Taylors were back in the U.S.
TOKYO, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co's (7201.T) talks with Renault SA (RENA.PA) are focused on optimising their investment in electric vehicles and strengthening their competitiveness as equal partners, the Japanese automaker's CEO told Reuters on Friday. Nissan Chief Executive Makoto Uchida declined to comment on whether an agreement could be reached this month. But he said he was talking with Renault Chief Executive Luca de Meo every weekend and the talks would be "ongoing for the future." Nissan is also considering investing in Renault's planned electric vehicle unit, the companies said. "We want it to be an equal partnership," Uchida said, adding that an "equal partnership would make sense and that would speed up the collaboration even more."
TOKYO, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co's (7201.T) negotiations with its partner and top shareholder Renault SA (RENA.PA) are focused on optimising their investment in electric vehicles and improving the competitiveness of the alliance, the Japanese automaker's CEO told Reuters on Friday. Negotiations between Renault and Nissan are ongoing with less than two weeks remaining to meet a Nov. 15 target the automakers had set to reach a deal, according to people with knowledge of the talks. Nissan's Chief Executive Makoto Uchida declined to comment on the timing of potential deal with Renault and whether it can be done this month. Nissan is considering investing in Renault's planned electric vehicle unit, the companies said last month. That unit includes Renault production sites in Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Romania and Latin America.
The French and Japanese automakers said this month they were in talks about the future of their alliance, including Nissan potentially investing in an electric vehicle business being spun out of Renault. With Nissan holding only 15% of Renault - and without voting rights - French dominance of the alliance has long been a point of contention. Renault wants Nissan to invest in its electric vehicle unit, while Nissan wants Renault to cut its stake to 15%, Reuters previously reported. Given its investment needs, Renault is the more eager of the two to reach a deal, said a person familiar with negotiations. Alliance junior partner Mitsubishi Motors Corp (7211.T) will likely invest a few percent in the new Renault unit to retain its alliance relationship, said another person familiar with the matter.
Overall group revenues grew by 20.5% when adjusted for the disposal of its former Russian unit Avtovaz, Renault said, adding that it had recorded its best-ever price effect as quarterly vehicle sales decreased by 2.4% from last year. Renault is Nissan's largest shareholder with 43% while the Japanese automaker owns 15% in its partner. The two companies said last week they were in talks about a new phase in their partnership that could include Nissan investing in Renault's new electric vehicle venture. Talks so far have included consideration of Renault selling some of its Nissan stake, sources have said.
TOKYO, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The relationship between Japan's Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) and top shareholder Renault SA should be "more equal", the Nikkei newspaper quoted the French automaker's chief executive as saying. "Each company needs to do what is best," he told the Nikkei, adding that that was the spirit of their alliance. Such a shift could mean the biggest reset in their relationship since the 2018 arrest of longtime executive Carlos Ghosn. Talks so far have included consideration of Renault selling some of its Nissan stake, Reuters has previously reported. For Nissan, that could mean a chance to alter a structure that many executives at the Japanese company have seen as unbalanced.
Nissan wants to reduce Renault’s 43% holding to 15%, on par with Nissan’s stake in the French group, Reuters reports. Free cash flow will turn positive to the tune of 388 billion yen ($2.7 billion) by 2024, Morningstar estimates. He could, for example, ask shareholders to buy some of Renault’s Nissan stock. Or he could consider borrowing more; even after buying back a chunk from Renault, Nissan’s debt-to-EBITDA multiple could manage it. Nissan’s Renault reshuffle will drive a capital raise; he just needs to pick a route.

The deal makes Nissan the latest major company to leave Russia since Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February. The Nissan deal was "of great significance for the industry," Russia's Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said in a statement.

Another headache is the alliance’s lopsided governance, which sees Renault hold a 43% stake in Nissan but the Japanese group prohibited by French law from exercising voting rights associated with its 15% stake in Renault. That will need Nissan’s backing, and the Japanese group might also invest in the electric division. The quid pro quo may be for Renault to give up some of its 43% share in Nissan. That implies the current value of just over 9 billion euros assigns little worth to the Nissan stake. Nissan is pressing Renault to cut its 43% stake in the Japanese group to as little as 15%, Reuters reported on Oct. 8.
The talks, which could prompt the biggest reset in the alliance since the 2018 arrest of longtime executive Carlos Ghosn, have included consideration of Renault selling some of its Nissan stake, two people with knowledge of them said. Renault and Nissan said in a joint statement that they were "engaged in trustful discussions around several initiatives" including a potential Nissan investment in the EV venture and what they called "structural improvements" in their alliance. In exchange for investing in the EV venture, Nissan is looking to Renault to reduce its stake in the Japanese automaker, a person familiar with the talks said. Nissan may consider raising funds to buy back the shares held by Renault, one person told Reuters. Nissan may need to raise funds to buy the shares back from Renault, the source added.
