Israel is escalating its bombardment of targets in the Gaza Strip ahead of an expected ground invasion against Hamas militants. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, mostly civilians who died in the initial Hamas rampage. CNN —The Biden administration is debating whether to designate Travis King, the US Army soldier who crossed into North Korea last month, as a prisoner of war, defense officials told CNN. But VanLandingham said it’s unclear that North Korea would even acknowledge POW status or afford King the protections it bestows. A series of decrees signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin compel Ukrainians to get Russian passports, in violation of international humanitarian law, the report said. Ukrainians in occupied territory who do not seek Russian citizenship "are subjected to threats, intimidation, restrictions on humanitarian aid and basic necessities, and possible detention or deportation – all designed to force them to become Russian citizens," the report said. "What is concerning here is that it represents, basically, a violation of the Hague and Geneva Conventions," said Executive Director Nathaniel Raymond of the Humanitarian Research Lab at the Yale School of Public Health. The report was released as part of the Conflict Observatory program, with the support of the U.S. State Department and conducted by research partner the Yale School of Public Health's Humanitarian Research Lab.

The Ukrainian prosecutor general's office said on Tuesday it was investigating the blast at the Nova Kakhovka dam, situated in Russian-occupied territory, as a war crime and possible act of environmental destruction, or "ecocide". The Kakhovka dam was destroyed on Tuesday, releasing a flood of water into southern Ukraine. Footage shows torrents of water from the Kakhovka Reservoir draining rapidly into the Dnipro River. "The Russian occupation troops destroyed the Kashkova hydroelectric station," said the Southern Command of Ukraine's forces on its Facebook page. The Kakhovka Reservoir holds around 18.2 cubic kilometers of water, or 4 trillion gallons. The Kakhovka Reservoir also supplies water to millions of people in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin has allegedly committed war crimes in Ukraine, the ICC said in a Friday statement. He's been accused by the court of orchestrating involvement in illegally transferring children from Ukraine to Russia. The Netherland's based court alleged these crimes have been carried out since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022. The UN said many of the actions, including the transfer and deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia, "amount to war crimes."
