The 2024 bumper election year presents a unique opportunity to make progress in closing the global gender gap, according to the World Economic Forum. It is now estimated to take 134 years — or five generations — to close the global gender gap, up from 131 years in 2023, WEF said. This year's sweeping election cycle could narrow that gap, however, by boosting women's representation in the political sphere, the non-governmental organization said. WEF's Global Gender Gap Report, now in its 18th year, is an annual index designed to measure gender equality. "With over 60 national elections in 2024 and the largest global population in history set to vote, women's political representation and the overall gender gap could be set to improve," the report said.

Being a girl with "Tommie" as a first name is one thing — but having "Christopher" as a middle name turned quirky into confusing. My name is a hand-me-down that came from my dad, Thomas/Tommy, and his late best friend, Christopher. The best names come with history, and my history was of two rowdy fighters who made the streets and concert halls their home. Advertisement"One side or the other is going to win," Alito told Windsor at the event, according to both outlets. Windsor told The Times that making the secret recordings was the only way she believed she could get answers to her questions. "I mean, whether or not Justice Alito thinks that the country's political or tribal divisions are likely to be solved anytime soon doesn't tell us very much." In 2013, the share of self-identified liberals among young women exceeded the share among young men by 5 percentage points; by 2023, that gap was nearly four times as large. (In that survey, young men were substantially more likely than young women to say they rely on YouTube as a major source of news.) (In the Harvard poll, one-fourth of young women identified in some way as LGBTQ, more than double the share of young men.) “He’s got to make up for the defection of young men by winning young women by more, and he’s got to get every young woman he can out to vote,” said Lake, the Democratic pollster. Biden’s best hope of avoiding a catastrophic decline in his youth support is that the number of young women Trump repels exceeds the number of young men he attracts.

For young, secular, politically progressive men and women, having children has become something of an afterthought. Indeed, the data suggest that people are having children later than they used to and are having fewer than they’d like. Unreserved enthusiasm for having children can come across as essentially reactionary. Over the past four years, we’ve conducted interviews and surveys with hundreds of young Americans about their attitudes toward having children. If they are not, they face a choice of returning to the dating pool, freezing their eggs (if they haven’t done so already), single parenting or giving up their hope of having kids of their own.

Most of those efforts failed, but they have fueled harmful rhetoric around drag performers and the art form itself. Barbara Alper/Getty ImagesDrag has become increasingly visible in recent years through mainstream shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and popular public events such as drag brunches, drag bingo and drag queen story hours, in which drag performers read children’s books to young audiences, often at libraries. Pickle reads from a book during the Drag Queen Story Hour program at a Los Angeles library in 2019. These lawmakers falsely claim that drag performers “groom” or sexualize children, of which there is also no evidence. It’s why Alaska Thunderf**k, the blonde bouffanted winner of the second season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” first got into drag – to make art that wasn’t bound by rules.

“Hit Man” suggests that when backing away from misogyny, men, too, have more options, more happiness and more love. “Double Indemnity” turned the trope into an indelible archetype for the morally ambiguous world of film noir. Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage walks to speak to supporters as he launches his election candidacy at Clacton Pier on June 4, 2024 in Clacton-on-Sea, England. Labour is expected to win 40% of votes to the Conservatives' 19% and Reform's 17%, the online polling showed. Farage's surprise return as Reform leader on Monday dealt a deadly blow to the party, threatening to steal a significant share of votes on the right. In the 2019 election, his then-Brexit Party agreed not to field candidates in hundreds of seats to safeguard a Conservative win. The announcement hurts Sunak's earlier efforts to win right-wing votes by hardening the Tories' stance on migration and the U.K.'s membership of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Opinion: I just don’t get watching organized sports

It’s usually these professional sport high holidays where I’m cornered into admitting I’m sports agnostic. The winning and losing of watching professional sports is a faux drama, a soap opera with injuries. The difference is, of course, that the wins and losses of politics don’t benignly reset at the start of the next season. It’s the watching, and caring about, professional sports as an adult that eludes my understanding. Forgetting who he was talking to, he began his explanation by comparing his home team to another professional underdog team.

New Report Underscores the Seriousness of Long Covid

One of the nation’s premier medical advisory organizations has weighed in on long Covid with a 265-page report that recognizes the seriousness and persistence of the condition for millions of Americans. More than four years since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, long Covid continues to damage many people’s ability to function, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, a nongovernmental institution that advises federal agencies on science and medicine. “Long Covid can impact people across the life span, from children to older adults, as well as across sex, gender, racial, ethnic and other demographic groups,” it said, concluding that “long Covid is associated with a wide range of new or worsening health conditions and encompasses more than 200 symptoms involving nearly every organ system.”Here are some of the National Academies’ findings, drafted by a committee of 14 doctors and researchers:How many people have long Covid? The report cited data from 2022 suggesting that nearly 18 million adults and nearly a million children in the United States have had long Covid at some point. At the time of that survey, about 8.9 million adults and 362,000 children had the condition.

CNN en Español —American John Poulos was sentenced on Tuesday to more than 42 years in prison by a Colombian court, after he was found guilty of aggravated femicide in the killing of a young Colombian DJ named Valentina Trespalacios, as well as crimes of concealment, alteration or destruction of evidence. Additionally, the judge prohibited Poulos from approaching or attempting to communicate with Trespalacios’ family for 20 years, and ordered that he be expelled from Colombia once he completes his sentence. In Colombia, femicide — the killing of a woman because of her gender — is considered a more serious crime than homicide. From the beginning, we established that we were facing objectification, an instrumentalization of a woman through various factors, psychological violence, violence of various types, including physical violence,” lawyer Miguel Ángel del Río told Focus Noticias. Del Río also pointed out that only until the conviction is made final in a second-instance appellate court will Trespalacios’ family be able to seek reparation for damages.
