County lawyers had urged approval of the settlement in a letter to the board, the station said. In 2020, it won a five-year, $2.9 million contract with LA County for software to track election worker schedules, training, payroll and communications. Yu sued the county, alleging that District Attorney George Gascón had targeted him based on allegations of conspiracy theorists and election deniers. “Plaintiffs alleged Mr. Yu’s arrest and the seizure of Konnech’s property was without probable cause and a violation of Mr. Yu’s civil rights causing damage to Konnech’s business and Mr. Yu’s reputation,” according to the letter by the county lawyers. In legal filings for the lawsuit, Yu noted that Los Angeles County continues to use Konnech's services and is, in fact, its largest customer.

LOS ANGELES — Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of one count of rape and two counts of sexual assault but acquitted of one count of sexual battery after a trial in Los Angeles, nearly three years after the disgraced movie mogul was convicted at a watershed sex crimes trial in New York City. In the Los Angeles trial, jurors found Weinstein guilty of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration by foreign object. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón thanked the jurors for their service and hailed the accusers who came forward. A Los Angeles sheriff's deputy was charged Wednesday for an on-duty, unlawful fatal shooting of a man who was holding a knife last year outside his family's East L.A. home. L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy Remin Pineda, 38, was charged with one felony count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and assault under color of authority following the March 2021 fatal shooting of David Ordaz, Jr., L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón announced Thursday. The deputies’ union, Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, did not immediately return a request for comment. In August, another L.A. County sheriff's deputy, Sean Essex, 51, was indicted on charges of sexually assaulting four girls in a case that prosecutors had declined to pursue a decade ago. Last year, a state civil rights investigation was opened into the sheriff’s department over allegations of excessive force.
With the defendant's no contest plea, Los Angeles authorities closed the case on the 2011 murders of a teenage girl and a young woman that once sparked fears of an Eastside serial killer. The first was when investigators zeroed in on serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr., known as the Grim Sleeper, in 2010. A search of familial DNA turned up a near-match for evidence collected from the Eastside victims' bodies, Beck said in 2017. The Los Angeles County coroner's office said Lozano had been strangled and Guzman, whose body was badly decomposed, sustained unspecified neck trauma. Beck said his department's DNA database search turned up no other open-case matches for Borjas.
