Companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek have launched smartphone chipsets that enable the processing power required for AI applications. Large language models are huge AI models trained on vast amounts of data that underpin applications like the widely popular chatbots. The other big part of the AI smartphone puzzle is the term "on-device AI." Previously, many AI applications on devices were actually partly processed in the cloud, then downloaded onto the phone. Smartphone makers say on-device AI improves the security of gear, unlocks new applications and also makes them faster, since the processing is done on the handset.

Fitch defined red states as those that voted for former President Donald Trump in 2020 by more than three percentage points. “The reality is manufacturing was migrating to those states even before the CHIPS Act and the IRA. Relative to the size of their state economies, Arizona, Idaho and West Virginia are the biggest winners from the IRA and CHIPS Act investments, according to Fitch. London CNN —Scientists and engineers near the English city of Oxford have set a nuclear fusion energy record, they announced Thursday, bringing the clean, futuristic power source another step closer to reality. To generate fusion energy, the team raised temperatures in the machine to 150 million degrees Celsius — around 10 times hotter than the core of the sun. A commodity "super squeeze" is denoted by higher prices driven by supply constraints more than a robust growth in demand, he explained. "If it's a supply constraint that's driving high commodity prices, it's a very different story for global growth," he told CNBC via Zoom. Higher prices as a result of a super squeeze are "not as positive." The super squeeze could be deeper, or more prolonged if geopolitical, climate change or energy transition related supply disruptions are larger than expected. He highlighted that extreme weather events and geopolitics have also impacted the agricultural and energy commodity baskets.

But that's a tricky situation for investors, as cuts would likely come in response to a slowing economy. Rate cuts aren't inherently bullish and signs emerging that the economy is slowing into year-end. AdvertisementMarkets are cheering the possibility the Federal Reserve could begin slashing interest rates next year, but rate cuts are a double-edged sword, Wall Street experts are warning, because of what the move would signal about the broader economy. But rate cuts may not be the decidedly bullish catalyst markets are hoping for. AdvertisementMarkets have been eyeing a Fed rate cut to trigger a bullish rally in stocks.

The Fed's next rate move will be to cut rates, former PIMCO chief economist Paul McCulley said. Some forecasters say the Fed will slash interest rates by nearly three percentage points next year. Most significant is the "crack" in shelter inflation, McCulley said, which rose 6.7% year-over-year in October. AdvertisementInvestors will debate over when the Fed will cut rates, he added, though most are expecting the first rate cut to happen sometime next year. Some economists, though, have cautioned that the Fed risks easing interest rates prematurely, which could eventually lead to a resurgence in inflation down the line.

Amazon and Shopify announced a new Buy with Prime app for Shopify on Wednesday. Buy with Prime let merchants offer Prime benefits, such as fast shipping and free delivery, on websites beyond Amazon.com. Amazon had no choice but to let Shopify merchants view Buy with Prime-related metrics on its own backend console, not within the unified Shopify Admin tool, according to the internal Amazon document from April. If Buy with Prime data wasn't smoothly integrated into Shopify Admin, Shopify merchants might not use the Amazon feature much. Constant delaysThe internal Amazon document described a Shopify-native Buy with Prime app as a "flagship" goal for Amazon's top leadership because it would make Buy with Prime more appealing to Shopify merchants.

When Juliana Chan decided to take her company fully remote in August, some managers reached out and said, "You are very brave to be going remote," she recalled. That's because remote work "comes with its own set of challenges" for companies, despite its popularity among employees. The 'prototypically strong' remote workerWhen she wrote a post on LinkedIn about taking her company remote, Chan said she received an influx of messages from job applicants asking for possible roles. The types of in-person behaviors that are traditionally key to success in an office setting may not matter anymore in a remote setting. The SEC is seeking public comment on the Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF application, and has pushed back the decision date by several weeks to potentially months. In June, BlackRock (BLK.N), the world's biggest asset manager, also filed for a bitcoin ETF, a move that many viewed as a gamechanger for the industry.
