(AP) — Missouri's high court entertained arguments Thursday on whether to force changes to the state's Senate districts in a case that has divided majority-party Republicans over how to apply new voter-approved redistricting criteria. The lawsuit brought by voters contends that Senate districts in suburban St. Louis and western Missouri's Buchanan County violate the state constitution by needlessly splitting cities or counties into multiple districts. The outcome of the case won't affect immediate control of the Senate, where Republicans hold a 24-10 majority over Democrats. Deputy Solicitor General Maria Lanahan told judges that various other Senate districts — though not challenged by plaintiffs — also split counties while not following political subdivision lines. "Compact, contiguous territory is the first and most powerful line of defense against political and racial gerrymanders,” Senate Republicans wrote in a brief filed by attorney Eddie Greim.

One could practically see the temper tantrum that was sure to materialize from hard-line conservative House members when over the weekend House Speaker Mike Johnson cut a deal with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to back a top-line funding total key to preventing a government shutdown. At a closed-door GOP House caucus meeting Wednesday morning, Johnson was skewered by the far-right flank of his party, who scoffed at the funding deal. “Mike Johnson doesn’t work for Chuck Schumer and the White House. Johnson, who has garnered respect from his far-right colleagues as an outspoken Christian conservative, surely knew the deal with Schumer would irk hard-liners. Nor does there appear to be an appetite for another wrenching and divisive battle for yet another speaker, especially as House Republicans seek to present a united political front in this critical election year.

(AP) — Former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn has decided against a bid for governor in 2025 and will instead run next year to represent the competitive northern Virginia congressional seat being vacated by a fellow Democrat, U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton. “This is an unfair, devastating reality that she now has to navigate,” Filler-Corn said, adding that she had discussed her plans with Wexton. The open seat dynamic in the Loudoun County-centered 10th District — Filler-Corn said she lives just outside it — could set up a competitive race with implications for party control of the U.S. House. WASHINGTON — As the Republican stalemate over government funding continues, two freshman GOP House members opened the door Thursday to end-running their party's leadership and working with Democrats to fund the government. Lawler told reporters that if Republicans can't unify to pass a continuing resolution, or CR, to approve short-term funding, he will pursue a discharge petition with Democrats. "If there is not going to be a CR coming out of the House Republican caucus, then I will move forward with a discharge petition," he said. That means at least five Republicans would have to break off for a discharge petition to succeed — potentially more if not all Democrats sign it. Democratic leaders have downplayed the prospects of a discharge petition to resolve the mess and noted that one hasn't been filed.
