Shortly after midnight on Aug. 24, a driverless shuttle operated by General Motors ’ Cruise stopped in the middle of a street in downtown Austin, Texas.
Then it veered off the road, jumped the curb and hit the side of a building, according to video footage and police reports.
By the time officers showed up, Cruise employees had covered the vehicle with a tarp and were trying to dislodge it—a task complicated by the lack of driver’s seat or steering wheel.
