The modest revenue growth announced Thursday as part of Apple’s October-December results ended four consecutive quarters of year-over-year sales declines. As usual, the iPhone accounted for the bulk of Apple’s revenue. Apple’s services division, which is tied largely to the iPhone, posted an 11% rise in revenue from the previous year to $23.12 billion. Both the revenue and earnings for the quarter exceeded analysts’ projections, according to FactSet Research. So, why is the price of bitcoin falling, even after investors got what they wanted? Part of the reason is likely a “buy the rumor, sell the news” mentality, according to Antoni Trenchev, co-founder of crypto lender Nexo. Interestingly, bitcoin ETF activity actually shows net buying. Greyscale’s fund is the largest bitcoin ETF, holding roughly $20 billion in assets. ETFs hold just a small portion of the bitcoin that’s traded, says Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence.

Everything was getting bigger — its cultural influence, geopolitical ambition, population — and seemed poised to continue until the world was remade in China's image. But now China's economy is withering, and the future Beijing imagined is being cut down to size along with it. What Beijing does — or fails to do — to fight this malaise will determine the course of humanity for decades to come. China's deflation worries started in earnest in the summer. Years of overbuilding — by about double the population, according to some estimates — and slowing population growth caused prices to collapse .

That appears to be the verdict of stock investors, who sent the CSI 300 Index down 1.9% to its lowest level in almost five years. Adding to the gloom: after Chinese markets closed, Moody’s Investors Service cut its outlook on the country’s credit rating to negative . The ratings company said financial lifelines extended by the government to distressed regions and companies are harming the economy. China’s lackluster growth since the end of pandemic lockdowns has weighed on the stock market: The CSI 300 has fallen about 12% this year. Trading at about $79 a barrel, benchmark Brent crude was on track to snap a three-day losing streak.

(AP) — Warren Buffett's company has reported a nearly $13 billion loss in the third quarter as the paper value of its investments fell, but the companies it owns — particularly the insurers — generally performed well. Berkshire Hathaway said Saturday that it lost $12.8 billion, or $8,824 per Class A share, in the quarter. That's significantly bigger than the $2.8 billion loss, or $1,907 per Class A share, that it reported a year ago. A year ago, the insurers reported a $1.1 billion loss in the third quarter. The biggest driver in that increase in expenses was a $1.3 billion loss related to wildfires at its PacifiCorp unit.
