After analyzing related samples from New Zealand and Tasmania, Pellicer homed in on the New Caledonian fork fern as a potentially interesting target for study. CNN —The Hubble Space Telescope will transition to a new way of operating that aims to prevent the space observatory from experiencing lapses in its ability to observe the universe, according to NASA officials. The storied telescope, which has captured breathtaking images of the cosmos for 34 years, has traditionally operated using six gyroscopes. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope eyes the universe in May 2009 after one of the space shuttle missions to service the space observatory. Hubble is expected to operate into the mid-2030s, with its cosmic observations providing a complement to the work of the James Webb Space Telescope and future observatories that haven’t launched yet, Clampin said. “We do not see Hubble as being on its last legs,” Crouse said, “and we think it’s a very capable observatory.”

Additional lab and animal research presented in both papers revealed erythritol and xylitol may cause blood platelets to clot more readily. Clots can break off and travel to the heart, triggering a heart attack, or to the brain, triggering a stroke. “It’s sold as a so-called natural sweetener, and because xylitol doesn’t spike blood sugar levels, it’s also marketed as low carb and keto friendly,” Hazen said. The February 2023 erythritol in study found the risk of heart attack and stroke nearly doubled within three years when people had the highest levels of erythritol in their blood. For the new study on xylitol, the results were basically the same — people with the highest levels of xylitol compared to those with the lowest levels had nearly twice the risk of heart attack, stroke and death, Hazen said.

CNN —SpaceX’s Starship, the most powerful launch vehicle ever built has lifted off on its fourth flight test on Thursday. The flight test comes two days after the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches, gave SpaceX its approval. “The fourth flight of Starship will aim to bring us closer to the rapidly reusable future on the horizon,” according to SpaceX. After the explosive first and second Starship test flights, the company immediately sought to frame these mishaps as successes. But both the Starship spacecraft and booster made it farther into flight than the two previous tests in 2023.

CNN —In what is thought to be the first encounter of its kind to be witnessed by scientists, a tiger shark has been spotted vomiting up a dead echidna whole off the coast of an Australian island. He said it is “rare” that tiger sharks throw up their food, although they can when stressed. A different shark that the team caught and tagged also made a “surprising” regurgitation, throwing up half a dugong, according to the release. Tiger sharks have gluttonous appetites, a habit of scavenging and are reputed for man-eating. Tiger sharks are found in warm oceans worldwide.

But much more must be done and, as with most change, it’s important to start by admitting there’s a problem. The phenomenon of Democrats dismissing the polls in favor of misplaced optimism has been termed “hopium” by data journalist Nate Silver. Polling denial is not unanimous in the party, as many Democrats are reportedly in a full-blown “freakout” over Biden’s chances. It’s essential they admit the polling is correct, because if Biden is winning, there is little need to change course. This means these groups likely share top concerns with moderate voters generally.

A new study has possibly captured that objectively, finding that for teens diagnosed with internet addiction, signaling between brain regions important for controlling attention, working memory and more was disrupted. Specifically, internet ‘addiction,’ which was initially conjured up by (psychiatrist) Ivan K. Goldberg in 1995 as a joke. Women still cannot hold top positions in many religious institutions, and so many have understandably rejected these misogynistic formal patriarchies. If young women do indeed feel freer to opt out of sex they don’t want, that’s great. And most women desire sex, too, and deserve to have sex that feels good. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to be having sex all the time. The trick is refusing to fall into sexist ideas about what sex is for or how women should be valued.

CNN —SpaceX has received a launch license authorizing the fourth test flight of its massive moon rocket. A livestream of the flight test will be available on SpaceX’s website about 30 minutes before liftoff. “In addition, the FAA approved the mission profile that included a controlled and uncontrolled entry of the Starship vehicle. CNN —The latest attempt at an inaugural crewed launch of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft is on track for Wednesday after a computer issue halted the countdown just moments before liftoff on Saturday. The historic mission, called the Crew Flight Test, is set to launch at 10:52 a.m. Teams safely extracted the astronauts from the capsule, and Williams and Wilmore returned to crew quarters as fuel was drained from the rocket.
