Unilever, owner of brands including Dove soap and Hellmann’s mayonnaise, said Thursday that it has completed the sale of its Russian business to Arnest Group, a local manufacturer of perfume, cosmetics and household products, for an undisclosed amount. The British consumer goods company said the sale includes all of its business and four factories in Russia as well as its business in Belarus. “Over the past year, we have been carefully preparing the Unilever Russia business for a potential sale. The Kremlin demands a discount of at least 50% on exit deals involving firms from what it calls “unfriendly” countries — those that have imposed sanctions against Russia. The exodus of firms from Russia has cost foreign companies more than $107 billion in writedowns and lost revenues, according to a Reuters analysis in March.

New York CNN —Wednesday is National Cheeseburger Day, with some of the biggest chains offering some much-needed discounts amid consumer complaints about rising prices. It’s part of company’s string of deals to kickstart slumping sales, including recently extending its popular $5 value meal until December. Fast food has been a low-profit margin business with little customer loyalty. McDonald’s pricey burgers have become a flashpoint of criticism and a symbol of elevated fast food prices. So deals are particularly crucial to fast food companies at the moment to lure customers back.

New York/London CNN —Tupperware Brands Corporation, whose food containers have been a mainstay in American kitchens, has filed for bankruptcy. “Over the last several years, the company’s financial position has been severely impacted by the challenging macroeconomic environment,” Laurie Ann Goldman, Tupperware president and CEO, said in a statement late Tuesday. Tupperware has historically only sold to consumers through so-called direct sales, most commonly at “Tupperware parties,” similar to cosmetic company Avon’s business model, and only began selling in Target in 2022. Many businesses file for bankruptcy protection to wind down some operations, shed debt and cut costs. A common route, also chosen by Tupperware, is Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to solve its financial problems by restructuring.
