A crash site rediscoveredIn 2016, the agency received a tip the crash site had been rediscovered on farmland in Normandy. D-Day was 80 years ago and the remains of missing service members continue to be uncovered. The results are then compared to a DNA sample from the missing service member’s medical file. In 2009, Stouffer heard about other missing service members being accounted for and reached out to the agency to offer his DNA samples for analysis. Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa cancelled his "dearMoon" mission, which the project said would have been the first private flight around the moon, the mission announced on Saturday. "It's a developmental project so it is what it is, but it is still uncertain as to when Starship can launch," Maezawa said. Elon Musk's SpaceX named Maezawa, the colourful founder of Japanese online fashion store Zozo Inc, its first private passenger in 2018. Three years later he was the first private passenger to visit the International Space Station in more than a decade, launching on a Soyuz rocket. In November he said the flyby mission would be delayed until this year or later.

The author, Megan Bearce, and her husband, Ian, had just moved from Los Angeles to Minneapolis when he got a job offer in New York City in 2010. I heard this question so many times over the 10 years my husband, Ian, flew weekly from our home in Minneapolis to his job in New York City. Ian posted photos and art on the walls of the New York City apartments he stayed in during the week when he supercommuted from Minneapolis. Visits to New York City helped the kids get a glimpse of Ian's life during the week, Megan says. The logistics of multiple activities felt too overwhelming for me to handle with Ian away during the week.

Boeing 's first Starliner flight with astronauts on board was called off in the final minutes on Saturday. Holds in a rocket launch countdown – as well as "scrubs," indicating a launch delay – are a common occurrence in the industry. Two NASA astronauts are aboard the Starliner capsule, which would be carried by United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket to the International Space Station. Depending on the cause of the launch scrub, Boeing and NASA can reschedule the launch for another attempt 24 hours later, or target alternative launch dates of June 5th or June 6th. Saturday's crew flight test represents the final major step before receiving NASA certification to begin regular missions.

CNN —One of India’s biggest airlines has just launched a new feature that allows female travelers to see where other women are sitting when selecting seats for their flights. According to a statement sent to CNN, low-cost carrier IndiGo Airlines is offering the feature on a pilot basis to female passengers checking in for their flights online. The carrier, founded in 2006, operates more than 2,000 domestic and international flights per day in India. Though the airline didn’t specify a reason for giving women the option of seeing where other females are seated, assaults against women and children during commercial flights are reported regularly all over the world. “Typically, men are the perpetrators, and women and unaccompanied minors are the victims.”

CNN —Astronomers were in for a surprise when NASA’s Lucy mission flew by an asteroid named Dinkinesh in November and spotted a contact binary — two smaller space rocks that touch each other — orbiting the asteroid like a moon. “Basically, the planets formed when zillions of smaller objects orbiting the Sun, like asteroids, ran into each other. The Lucy mission captured additional imagery revealing that the asteroid Dinkinesh’s moon is actually two space rocks that are touching one another. Too distant to be seen in detail with telescopes, the asteroids will get their close-up when Lucy reaches the Trojans in 2027. The severe turbulence that killed one passenger and injured dozens on a recent Singapore Airlines flight led to sudden changes in altitude and airspeed, Singapore’s Transport Ministry said on Wednesday. Flight SQ321 encountered turbulence about 10 hours into a 13-hour trip to Singapore from London last week, officials said. The turbulence hit as the plane was traveling over southern Myanmar at an altitude of 37,000 feet, the Transport Ministry said in a preliminary report on Wednesday. When the plane rose unexpectedly by 362 feet, probably because of an updraft, its autopilot pitched it downward, the report said. The plane also sped up unexpectedly around the same time, and the pilots manually hit a brake in response.

It is unclear if Boeing will actually release its plans to the public; FAA chief Mike Whitaker is slated to speak about the Boeing plan later on Thursday. The plan is seen as a crucial step to rebuilding the safety culture and practices of the nation’s single largest exporter. Whitaker ordered the plan from Boeing after reviewing the findings of FAA auditors who visited the company’s 737 Max assembly line. The auditors were deployed in response to the January 5 door plug blowout on Alaska Airlines flight 1282, a months-old Max. The plan may be one of Boeing’s last major milestones under Calhoun, who announced in the wake of the blowout he would join other senior managers in leaving the company this year.

The Met Office had earlier warned that a volcanic eruption was likely following “intense seismic activity” at the crater and a build-up of magma in its underground reservoir. “Lava is flowing outside the defense walls at Grindavík in several places, and lava is also starting to flow outside the walls at Svartsengi,” Víðir Reynisson from Iceland’s Civil Defense told RUV. Another volcanic eruption is seen from a helicopter flight for the fifth time since December on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland on May 29, 2024. The site is part of southwest Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula — a thick finger of land pointing west into the North Atlantic Ocean from Reykjavik. Rather than having a central volcano, the Reykjanes Peninsula is dominated by a rift valley, with lava fields and cones.

Boeing’s top executives delivered a plan to improve quality and safety to the Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday, vowing to address systemic issues that have damaged the company’s reputation and put the aircraft manufacturer at the center of several federal investigations. Boeing detailed these and other steps during a three-hour meeting with the F.A.A.’s administrator, Mike Whitaker, where the company submitted a “comprehensive action plan” that the regulator ordered in February. Mr. Whitaker had given Boeing 90 days to develop a plan to make sweeping safety improvements after a midcabin panel known as a door plug blew out of a 737 Max 9 jet flying at about 16,000 feet on Jan. 5. No one was seriously injured during the flight. said in a statement on Thursday that “senior” leaders from the agency would “meet with Boeing weekly to review their performance metrics, progress, and any challenges they’re facing in implementing the changes.”
