The NewsGrowing numbers of children and adolescents are being prescribed multiple psychiatric drugs to take simultaneously, according to a new study in the state of Maryland. In this group, there was a 9.5 percent increase in the prevalence of “polypharmacy,” which the study defined as taking three or more different classes of psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, mood-stabilizing anticonvulsants, sedatives and drugs for A.D.H.D. Mental health experts said that psychotropic medications can prove very helpful and that doctors have discretion to prescribe what they see fit. And it is unclear how the simultaneous use of multiple psychotropic medications affects brain development long-term. ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Officers in a Detroit suburb found a furry surprise as they patted down a theft suspect: A tiny blue-eyed puppy, zipped inside the man’s jacket pocket. Roseville police discovered the blue pit bull on Jan. 16 while arresting a man accused of stealing money from a bank customer. The palm-sized female, about 5 weeks old, was taken to an animal shelter, where staff nicknamed her Bandit until they learned her name is Frappy, according to Jeff Randazzo, Macomb County’s chief animal control officer. Frappy's owner is charged with larceny from a person, accused of stealing the customer's bag containing about $5,200. After two years of receiving federal subsidies, 220,000 child care programs across the country were cut off from funding Saturday.
